Travel to Tirol by train - has anyone tried this?

We are planning to go skiing in Söll, Austria, at the half-term break next February. In past years we have flown, but this time we thought we'd try driving. Now I'm getting cold feet at the thought, and have been looking into travelling by train. Apparently you can leave London on the Eurostar on a Friday afternoon, change in Paris, take the overnight train and be in Munich by 7.30 the next morning for a connection on to Kufstein, Wörgl or St Johann in Tirol. (Or we could just get a taxi from Munich, which we've done before.)

Is this a good idea or completely insane? Has anyone done it? Any tips? Do the trains get booked up in the first half-hour after they become available online the same way the BA flights do?

BTW DD and DS will be 14 and 11 at time of travelling, so no small-children worries about long journeys.

Can't advise on specifics of going to (via) Innsbruck/Salzburg by train but have travelled from Vienna-Dusseldorf return overnight twice with DS (& the dog & the car!) when he was 2 & 4. We love it, however I have to say it's not cheap (have also done Vienna-Ancona, Italy return overnight with DS, DH & car)!
We're now in UK and have looked at route you are considering, I'd love to do it as time wise it seems great and we love the train but the cost just rules it out. I should add I look for a 3 berth sleeping car rather than a couchette.
We've loved all the trips we've done but they are more tiring than you expect, can't beat the romance or train travel thoughGrin.

We've booked it! It IS expensive - total cost for four of us, return from St Pancras to Wörgl, is £1143. But I am very excited about the sleeper and so are the children.
