First skiing holiday - can you help?

We'd like to go skiing - first time for all of us - over new year. We have 2 DCs aged 4 and nearly 7.

All the family friendly package holidays seem to have a Saturday or Sunday switchover but we'd need to go mid-week to mid-week.

Can anyone recommend a family-friendly but flexible ski company? I don't think I'm in a position to book flights, accommodation, lessons etc separately as it's our first time.

Thanks Smile

You will find most turn over days are weekends globally, you could look to go independently but as you point out its your 1st time so its a lot to take on.
I would at all costs try to get the days off necessary to go with weekends as costs may spiral.
As an ex ski rep married to an instructor (honest) I would be concentrating on a small learn to ski resorts, more than likely in Austria or France as more resorts to choose from.
Look for accommodation that is on piste or as near as possible(less walking and carrying clumsy and heavy equipment) with other things to do, bowling, swimming pool etc.
Chalets are a good option as chefs live in, food will be familiar to kids and fire and tv etc to chill in front of , just need to take baby monitors, plus meet other families.
Personally I love Austria, its a classic story book snow scene, pretty, atmospheric, Zell am see (worked there twice)is fabulous, loads to do & fab lake to walk on (yep on it) hot chocolate & gluhwein to sip, go on a sleigh ride with your family, not on piste but bus everywhere and lovely skiing from 1st timers to good intermediate. plus Kaprun next village with a glacier for back up ski plan.
possibly more expensive than the other resorts etc but BEAUTIFUL.
Andorra, cheaper option with lots of British instructors Arinsal, soldeu or Pas del la casa(last one more for nightlife) good skiing and go snow rafting!!
France pretty, my hubby would go for France every time but alas its full of French people!!
Italy, possibly not as sorted as others for 1st timers, so save it for your next one?
I will add, look at transfer times, some resorts are a long trip away from airports, and make sure you have insurance, good gloves, helmets for kids, buy them as its cheaper and sell on ebay when grown out of. Wear layers so if too hot or cold you add or remove.
If possible rent a locker on the mountain to leave trainers in and skis, carry ski boots if its not heated. Saves hassle, tears from kids and HUGE domestics.
If you have any other questions, feel free, I am very jealous as not booked anything yet(we live overseas but return to Uk soon)

Our friends went over new year this year and because the holidays were governed by the official bank holidays they didn't travel weekend to weekend. I would recommend la Rosiere in France for a family of beginners although apparently it can get windy here (I have never experienced it myself). Easy transport (train into bourg st Maurice and 20 mins transfers up the mountain) too.

You could try www.leski.com who are doing Tues/Tues I think and they have excellent child care as they are a small family run business. Might work for you?
:)

I would recommend Zell am See in Austria for first time skiing. Nursery slopes are excellent, resort is beautiful (right on lake)

I learned to ski there 3 years ago (over new year). Great for families

Lovely family resort at Avoriaz, we wishes we'd stayed there instead of Morzine.

tiredemma · 18/04/2011 12:30

I prefer Morzine to Avoriaz!

Morzine itself is nice, but we had one small boy and the ski school was nowhere near as friendly and fun looking as the one up the mountain :)
