Help - what to wear?

I have never ever been skiing in my life so need some hel from some ski experts.

DD 12 is about to go to the Alps with the school.

They have issued a packing list which has just plain confused me as it is not clear what DD should be wearing when skiing (they are also doing other activities whilst away).

We have bought base layer (tops and bottoms)and top layer, an all in ski suit as after 3 days of shopping there were no matching jackets and sallopettes anywhere in her size. What should DD be wearing ontop of her base layer but under her ski suit? The packing list only mentions jogging bottoms, walking trousers and fleeces.Confused

I apologise for my ignorance but please can someone advise what sort of thing DD should be wearing ontop of her base layer.

Base layer - top and bottom
Fleece jumper/jacket - top, possibly bottoms if very cold/high (but unlikely if school trip)
Ski suit
Ski gloves, with "magic" or liner gloves underneath
Ski socks - higher wool content the better, with liner socks underneath (get these from walking shop)
Hat (for apres ski, assume she will be wearing helmet for skiing)
Buff either as a scarf, or twist into a hat to wear under her helmet.

Money on decent gloves and socks in money well spent.

Goggles too!

StaceyShipman · 06/02/2011 15:54

Thank you!

We have goggles, gloves and ski socks but no liners, so will add them to next weekends shopping list.

So they can just wear the base layer trousers/leggings and fleecy top under the ski suit then?

Yes, outdoor sports people (like me) recommend - base layer, mid layer and shell (top layer). Maybe have a spare fleece in case it is very cold. There is a lot of standing about for ski lessons, when you can get a bit cold, but then once you're up and running (skiing!) you warm up very quickly. Make sure her fleece layer has a high neck to keep the drafts out.

Yes or any high necked long sleeve cotton top/sweatshirt over the thermal base layer, maybe with a fleecy neckwarmer to keep out the chill.

If she's got an all in one ski suit then she'll also need a warm coat for other activities.

LIZS · 06/02/2011 21:06

good point I wish.

Brilliant. Thanks for your hlp and advice. Luckily she has a ski jacket so that will be going with her too.

sunscreen/lipsalve also - ideally 2 lipsalves so can lose 1, and some pocket tissues as cold can make noses runny. maybe sunglasses if she is doing non-skiing outdoor activities.
and i would consider a second pair of gloves, so ski gloves can dry while wearing other gloves.

i know it looks really dorky, but those ski pants with suspenders really help! Much more comfortable than low-hanging snowboarding pants (I've ended up with a wet butt one too many times)!

i compiled some cute but somewhat ridiculous hats you can wear snowboarding or skiing if you don't end up wearing a helmet! hahaha, you can check them out here: thewantwardrobe.com/2011/03/07/get-rihannas-fur-trap-hat-look-fierce-snowboarding/

Sunglasses and suncream are very important as the sunshine will be very strong and bright in March/April...(spring etc).
For the cold mornings
Ski suit
Fleece
Baselayer

But if she finds she is just too hot , especially lunchtime and afternoons then :
Ski suit
Baselayer top and maybe a thinner top over.
May not need baselayer bottoms.
Gloves (Always)

Tell DD how important wearing suncream is..or she may come back really facially burnt.

Good luck to your DD... Ski safely, and have a great time !!
