Where is the flipping snow?!

We're going again to a resort we've been to 4 years running. There's a reasonable base layer (180cm at the top, 40cm at village level) but no fresh snow for what seems like weeks, and temperatures reached 7 or 8 degrees last week, so am guessing what snow is there must be in a ropey old state.
Anyone heard any encouraging forecasts for between now and half term? J2Ski not saying much useful so far...

4 weeks still til half term, a lot can happen, keep the faith!!

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 24/01/2011 09:08

where are you going, Clam?

clam · 24/01/2011 09:11

Southern Alps, Les Orres. No-one's ever heard of it, but it always has snow, even when other resorts don't. Just worried it'll be crap snow though!

I have been to Megeve and to Gstaad in the past couple of days. There is no snow there to speak of. Chamonix bad as well, except higher, and even there was not great according to friends.

Only place we saw snow was Les Diableret.

Locals are saying that it is one of the worst winters in years. I do hope that we get some decent snow soon.

BecauseItoldYouSo · 24/01/2011 12:38

Canada and the USA have all the snow this year. It doesn't stop falling.

MmeLindt · 24/01/2011 12:39

BecauseItoldyou
Even Scotland has more snow at the moment than the Alps.

The year that we decided to learn to ski, we have no snow.

ronshar · 24/01/2011 12:41

Normally I would be here moaning and groaning that the snow is rubbish too. But this year DH is going with his mates. I am laughing a lot in his face because no fresh snow for three weeks.Smile
It is my own Envy which I am obviously ashamed of.

I do hope you get some though.

orienteerer · 24/01/2011 19:53

clam - at least it's due to get colder with a little bit of snow.

clam · 24/01/2011 21:55

Thanks for that, orienteer.

Although that site doesn't mention the snow on Thursday that j2ski did earlier!

We were in St Foy last week and it snowed on Thursday but it has never been mentioned. I know there is plenty of snow in France although Trois valleys was a bit icy. Monday last week was very warm but the end of the week was very very cold.

MmeLindt · 24/01/2011 22:46

It is cold here, but no snow. And none forecast for this week. I am near Geneva, so Morzine/Chamonix/Megeve/Les Gets area.

Really depends on the resort, I think further into France it may be better. Certainly Val d'Isere looked good when we were there beginning of January.

tulpe · 24/01/2011 23:06

yes am rather concerned about lack of fresh snow too. We are off to Les Arcs on Sunday and according to the local weather website the last snowfall was 12 Jan Hmm. Whilst I know the resort is snowsure, I hate skiing on icy slopes - which I guess is inevitable with a lack of fresh powder :(

snowmummy · 25/01/2011 16:59

What a shame - it seemed such a great start to the season as well. Only consolation for me is that we're not going this year as DC3 is due in a couple of weeks.

Here's hoping for snow.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 25/01/2011 17:01

Don't worry - there's plenty of time between now and half term, honestly.

Not so good for this weekend though, tulpe. I do hope you get some (snow, that is!).

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 25/01/2011 17:15

What is puzzing is the discrepancy between snow reports from different sites (yes... I send a lot of time looking at various sno sites Blush....

snowmummy · 25/01/2011 19:10

MrsGuy - I know, that has always bugged me too.

orienteerer · 25/01/2011 21:14

Some of them are computer modelled, seems to make the predicted readings quite extreme.

fedupwithdeployment · 26/01/2011 13:48

I went to Les Orres at New Year - we always go there and other little resorts in the area as we have small house in the valley.

Snow was fine then...have you checked out the web cam?

My brother and family will be there at half term, so let's all pray for more snow.

www.lesorres.com/fr/webcams-hiver.html

QuintessentialShadows · 26/01/2011 13:50

Plenty of snow in the north of norway.

bigTillyMint · 26/01/2011 13:52

You got me worried there, so I googled the resort we are going to at half-term. Virtually all of the pistes are open, and the last snowfall was today, apparently. Its in the Les Gets, Morzine, etc area.

So you may be OK?

Still, fingers crossed for more before half-term!

clam · 26/01/2011 16:03

fedup I spend all of a fair bit of my time scrutinising those webcams! It's been looking fairly icy at the top these last few days. Family who went at New Year said it was icy then too and there's been hardly any new falls since then.

3 weeks to go...

OP posts:
fedupwithdeployment · 26/01/2011 17:21

It wasn't icy at New Year - it was lovely!! And weather was fab too Grin. I know you're right re the snowfall since. Seriously hoping it snows a lot before Feb or my DB will never let me hear the end of it. Total ski snob.

Have you tried Crevoux, Reallon or anywhere else nearby? Reallon will be rubbish if warm and not much snow, but Crevoux keeps it well.

We're thinking of going at Easter (was brilliant last year), but suspect that the snow will be pants by then.

clam · 26/01/2011 19:14

We keep pledging to try somewhere else, but get tempted back to what we know. We like to fly to Marseille and know the route up now, know where we like to stay (Bois Mean), where and when to shop/eat, how to avoid any queues at the lifts or in the skihire shop, who the instructors are etc... And, as I said earlier, it's pretty much snow-sure.

But yes. Next year....

OP posts:
fedupwithdeployment · 26/01/2011 22:50

Very similar to us - I know Marseille airport all too well! Don't be tempted by Nice - did that once and the drive nearly finished me off. We also do ferry / drive fairly frequently - worked a dream at Christmas.

I found it quite a lot busier this year - perhaps due to Bois Mean increasing the numbers. And one or 2 more English voices than usual. I still think it is great though - first went in 1992! But more frequently since 2005.

If you have a car there and fancy a change one day, it is about 30 mins drive from Les Orres to Crevoux. Check it out on the web - lovely little village with some great skiing. Much much quieter than Les Orres. It is 17? for a day, and although they only have 3 drag lifts (which is an issue for us with small children), the skiing is fab and varied. If you are into off piste that is very good too.

We also love Reallon which is basically on the other side of the lake immediately behind the bridge (prob 40 mins from Les Orres). You get fab views from there.

PatriciaHolm · 27/01/2011 09:36

Apparently there is naff all snow in the Val/St Foy area at the moment; they have the snow cannons out but there's only so much that can achieve. We're off for the weekend next week and I think I'm going to be sitting reading a book at this rate as I don't ski on ice Grin
