Please come and talk to me about La Rosiere with Esprit

We are looking to book our ski holiday for this season (hopefully Feb) and usually go to Belle Plagne with Esprit. This year we fancy a change and are looking for a smaller chalet.

I haven noticed that there are loads of offers on the La Ros chalets with Esprit.

Could I please have some recommendations of specific chalets and (perhaps more importantly!!) those to avoid?

Also, some non-marketing info about the resort would be fab too :) We are a very mixed group - DH is advanced, DS1 is happy on blues and gaining confidence on reds, DS2 also blues and as for me........pottering around all day on pretty blues, with occasional stops for vin chaud and tartiflette, is what I like best :)

we are going back to La Ros next week for the third time, and have friend who have been many more times. The first time we went was with Espirt, and had a brilliant time - if the DC had not been at the upper end of the age & ability range by then we would have gone again, and if i'd discovered Espri when the DC were small we would have used them instead of Mark Warner. Transfer form airpport was the only skui tranfer I have enver done which was actually bearable.
Warning tho - the hairpin bends up teh mountain are many and several kids were scik - the rep ( and driver!) did not have sick bags and did not concerned about that or consider it his problem (young lad) so would recomend going prepared. We were in on the cahlets in teh Ferme D'Elisa - do not pick the pne used for snow club lunches! In teh Ferem d'Elisa, is ski back, but not properly ski-out as there is a bit of steep climb to the nearest drag lift. Also, the boot room was just a massive underground unheated concrete garage and so boots get VERY cold overnight.

We went last year, stayed in Arnica it was nice. Apart from a d&v bug that did the rounds but hopefully that was a one off. Arnica is in ferm de lisa and they use it for snowclub lunch, I did see very small kids using the loo (during lunch when with snow rangers) just off the lounge with no supervision and not washing their hands. So maybe why there was a bug????????

My DH is (very advanced), I think he found teh resort a bit small for him, he said it was OK for a week but he wouldn;'t go back as he's done everything. We skiied over to Italy a few times for some more challengin stuff which was good but it is a windy resort and when too much wind the lift to Italy shuts. I'm happy on blues and reds and was fine, plenty of nice blues and vin chaud stops.

Biggest pain was that you can ski from the chalet down to a drag lift. Then at the top of the lift you have to take your skis off and walk up the slope to be able to ski oevr to the big chair lift. Its only a minute of walking up the slope but was just a right pain every morning.

Thanks for the info :)

MrsGuy which Esprit chalet did you stay in?

Viva - I have often been a little Hmm at hygiene issues with Esprit nursery staff. Thankfully mine are that little bit older so generally pay a little more attention to their own hygiene.....for now!

We skied over there form La Thuile pre dc so 12+ years ago. My observation then was few mountain cafes (and the one we stopped at had a really skanky hole loo), with most of the facilities and socialising going on in the town itself even at lunchtime. The runs felt pretty short and above treeline. All of which has also proved true of other French resorts we've visited since. We then drove through one summer a few years back and there was lot of development going on so am sure the resort has grown since.

Thanks Lizs.

I seemed to remember reading negative things about La Ros somewhere else before. However, it also seems v popular on here so thought I would enquire.

Am just floundering with where else to choose.

There was a bit of a lack of mountain restaurants, though there was one nice one fairly central as I remember. Don't think I braved the toilets.

MrsGuyOfChristmasBorn · 30/12/2010 17:25

Hi - can't remember which of the chalets it was in the Ferme d'Elisa, not the small one at the top, maybe the one below?
Agree about mountain restos, not in great supply. Re skiing down below the tree line there are parallel black & red that run down through the trees to (a very long chair up!) Seez, very quiet, and a couple of blues that run down from the Eucherts end, quote pretty. We are going to the Eucherts end this year, which I prefer as quieter - we are not nightlife types Xmas Grin. This time going with SkiBeat, who we have been with before, okay, but annoyed that the ski-hosting they used to offer, and offered this year, was withdrawn after we paid the final bill - not pleasd about that ( & no refund offered!)so as it was previously one of their plusses - next time we shall book with a company that offers that and hope it is not just withdrawn the last minute.

olliepolly · 30/12/2010 19:09

we are also going with ski beat.
last minute decision 3/1 to 8/1 Eucherts
Papillon 6.
Never used ski beat before so we will see.
also going with them in feb so hope its good

We stayed in the Chalet Bracconnier about three years ago. It was our first time with Esprit and we loved it but I think the resort skiing wise is a bit limited.

I posted a (very long!) review in the reviews section.

deste · 19/01/2011 17:27

We skied in La Rosier yesterday and the skiing was fantastic. The toilets in the cafe we used were immaculate.

tulpe · 19/01/2011 19:12

aaarrrggghhh!!! still not made a decision on where to go!

Deste thanks for coming back to report on your experience.

DH wants us to give La Rosiere a try (I think he is fed up with me tinterwebbing and trying to find an attractive deal to Belle Plagne :) ) and he reckons its probably worth a go for the prices that Esprit have available.

Am I being paranoid wondering quite why they have so many rooms available in La Rosiere?

Re: La Ros being a windy resort - is it especially unpleasant? Not bothered about lift to La Thuile as don't think my skiing is up to the red at the opposite end (if Snowheads is to be believed). But equally don't want DCs getting blown around and therefore suddenly hating skiing.

Am also a rather nervous chairlift user so the prospect of being blown around on slow lifts appeals to me as much as a good bout of D&V!!

There is no wind at the moment, beautifull sunshine although first thing this morning there was a little snow and some fog but it has cleared up. We have been told bookings are at 10% on last year.
