Can we have a First Aid thread please?

within general health?

after this thread I was reminded about how many people have bad first aid knowledge.

There could be a disclaimer at the top about liability, but I think it could be a really useful topic.

fanks.

Wanted to draw your attention to this post about meningitis - and the link to the fever traffic light table .. I think something like this would be good to have somewhere easily accessible on mumsnet

IMoveTheStars · 11/03/2010 12:18

oricella - thanks for that link.

Bramshott · 11/03/2010 12:21

How about not a first aid thread, but a first aid area with easy to refer to pages with what to do in an emergency for cuts / bumps / burns etc.

IMoveTheStars · 11/03/2010 12:50

agreed. I do think a lot of people think they know their first aid, so wouldn't necessarily look on the NHS site, but if they are on MN they may have a look at a First Aid section.

Haven't forgotten about this, honest. We're mulling how best to do it and will post once we've got something definite to report back.

Just stumbled across this. This issue has been bothering me for days (namechanger here) after posting on a thread about someone who's child had an acute problem. I couldn't believe that someone would take the trouble to type out their child's symptoms rather than seek professional advice. Why would a parent take the risk? If it's to avoid bothering A&E then that's what NHS direct was set up. Anyone posting replies could be someone just out to cause trouble (or just wildly out of date with their advice)

My biggest problem is why would any HC professional put their name to advice given, and then potentially be liable?

NHS direct was set up for exactly this type of query (ie not sure if it's urgent...), and if it is urgent then take your child to A&E.

I feel really strongly about this and completely opose any topic that starts to address acute health issues.

OP what was the original thread about? It's been removed now.

IMoveTheStars · 15/04/2010 15:03

Thing is, people will post about this kind of thing regardless, there's a post every week about something first aid related (the OP was referring to a thread about a bad burn and the OP of that thread was given some pretty bad advice)

Might be a good idea to have it all in one place, with disclimers/NHS number/ A&E advice/link to St Johns website at the top, rather than people posting in chat or AIBU.

IMoveTheStars · 18/04/2010 22:30

MNHQ - what are you thinking about this?
