Do you or your children love school dinners and would you be happy to talk about why you love them on film?

The School Food Trust want to make a short, fun film promoting school dinners and are looking for some folks (adults and children) to take part. So whether it's just the fact that not making a packed lunch gives you an extra ten minutes in bed, you feel strongly about your child having a hot meal at lunchtime, or you just want to reminisce about spam fritters (or was that just me?) if you'd be happy to tell us why you think school meals are a good thing we'd love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] and tell us why you'd like to take part and where you live. If you could also leave us a contact tel that would be great.

Thanks,

MNHQ

Not sure I fancy being on screen, although 7y DD properly wouldn't mind. But we are at a private school, not astate, so not sure if that matters or not.

DD loves her school dinners. they are compulsary at her school and included in the fees. They are cooked fresh on site daily and the menu seems really nice. I have actually eaten there a number of times and the quality is very good. There is a choice of main meal of jacket potato and salad daily, and a choice of dessert or fruit. Bread and butter is always provided.

Infact the cook is so good we are paying to go to a "Come dine with..." hosted by the cook in February

Not just you, Carrie.

Spam fritters were my least favourite. Not sure I want to thank you for the reminder.

Hulababy · 22/01/2010 13:07

I think it was school dinners that put me off eating meat - all that grissle, fat and then the tough liver. Urgh! No wonder I don't touch it now.

DS aged 9 loves his school lunches and has said on many occasion how much he prefers them to my cooking.

He is at a private school and they cook traditional meals and puddings.

Based on the information above, I feel I cannot bear to 'out' myself and appear on screen in the knowledge that my cooking is second rate to some school !

CountessDracula · 22/01/2010 13:59

I bet dd would do it (i would not)

Her primary school does amazing school lunches - they opted out of the local borough wide company and raised enough money to kit out the kitchen and have a brilliant company who source things locally and use organic milk/yog/meat and are really very brilliant. I have eaten the food it is great

I refuse to call them dinners though
it is LUNCH

solo · 22/01/2010 15:08

Oh I loved spam fritters!!!

Ds likes school dinners and gets them occasionally if I've got enough money to cover it which is rare but still...

No, feel a bit camera shy, me!

muggglewump · 22/01/2010 16:05

DD loves school meals, and still has them even though I'm no longer entitled to them free. I pay for them because she enjoys them.

Not sure I'd go on camera though, too shy, unless I can get drunk first.......

mustrunmore · 22/01/2010 18:24

Ok, I'm going to email you because ds1 really really likes his and wants to do it, altho no way do i want to be filmed!

mamazon · 22/01/2010 18:50

Ds loves having hot lunches and its been a godsend for me.

he used to be incredibly fussy, but since he has had school meals his diet has expanded so dramatically i cannot even begin to sing its raises enough.

not sure i would want DS on film though...or how much you would get from him. but if your desperate for folk to do it i will,.

suwoo · 22/01/2010 22:18

Me and DD will do it.

She was very unsure about 'hot dinners' but her bf had them so she switched from sandwiches. I have been vegetarian for 22 years and weaned all three as veggies until they made their own choice. DD has now made her own choice and is carnivorama. Our whole eating habits have changed significantly as now instead of cooking veggie for me and the kids and meat for DH, it is meat for them and veggie/low fat for me. It has expanded my repetoire and they are loving it.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 22/01/2010 22:31

As a teacher I adore our school dinners, you will not get me on camera though

SolidGoldBrass · 23/01/2010 00:44

My DS loves school dinners - perhaps because my DS loves food and is a right little dustbin.
I will email you if I remember as DS would probably be quite good on film. Not me, though. It would spoil your film.

tartyhighheels · 23/01/2010 23:36

Both my daughters love their hot lunch at school. They go to a state school and are lucky enough to have a wonderful cook who does them a coeliac lunch everyday - all for £2 each a day. I think it's amazing value and nice to see the children sitting down together, eating properly and having a chat.

duckyfuzz · 24/01/2010 20:52

I love the school lunch I get at work every day and DTs tell me about lunch first when I pick them up from school, it is the highlight of their day (and even better now they are free as one of the pilot LAs ) but not sure I want to be on camera...

memorylapse · 24/01/2010 22:46

my 2 youngest dc's have school dinners and love them..sadly DS who is 8 would refuse to be filmed but DD (nearly 6) would be happy to rave about her dinners

Carriemumsnet · 25/01/2010 09:24

Thanks so much for the responses to this - we've had quite a few emails through and will be in touch once we work out the logistics of who we can manage to film. Mamazon if your son doesn't fancy being on camera, there's no reason you can't be it would be great to have someone saying it has made their child less fussy, as this is certainly my experience and am sure it's the same for others. If any of you haven't emailed and would be interested in taking part , please drop us a line telling us why you want to do it, where you live and a contact tel and we'll be in touch.

Thanks again for all the comments and to all the volunteers.

Mmmmmmm, stodgy cake with custard - and chocolate custard if it was chocolate cake. Yum!

Never understood why people would fight over the skin though
