The Teaching Awards are basically the Oscars for teachers. They are currently looking for nominations and have asked if mumsnetters had any suggestions. You can nominate a school team, teachers, teaching assistants, governors, or the whole school for an award. The categories are:

The Henry Winkler Award for Special Needs
The Award for Outstanding School Team of the Year
The Film My School competition
The SSAT Award for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year
The NCSL Award for Headteacher of the Year
The DCSF Teaching Award for Enterprise
The Becta Award for Next Generation Learning
The TDA Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year
The RAF Award for Teacher of the Year
The DCSF Award for Governor of the Year
The DCSF Award for Sustainable Schools
The Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement

You can make your nomination anytime before March 1st 2010 on the teaching awards site. You can also text THANX, teacher's name, school, town and your name to 81025.

Thanks,

MNHQ

What a good idea .

Some newer schools might not be found though - their records (at least in my county) don't seem to have been updated since at least 2007. Have emailed them.

England only?

bronze · 21/01/2010 16:20

I will be doing this

pagwatch · 21/01/2010 16:38

their records are crap indeed.
My sons school moved more than three years ago...

I 'm not sure awards mean much to most teachers, especially since Daniel Kinge - the paedophile behind the Sparklebox website - won the Teacher Training Agency Award for Outstanding New Teacher in 2004.

Peachy · 22/01/2010 15:46

Well I owuld have thought that knowing somebody took the time to nominate you is a good thing, No?

5inthebed · 22/01/2010 19:28

I want to nominate my ds2's LSA, and have tried a few times, but cannot put into words how amazing she is with him. I really need a clear head for this, and someone who can speak better English than me.

I'm a teacher and I think the majority of us would think of it as a huge compliment! If your child's teacher / school etc deserve it then it's a lovely thing to take the tine to do. Plus it's nice to see a teaching assistant award aswell, they work so hard for very little money / recognition.

tatt · 23/01/2010 22:51

I would like to - except that they haven't done anything to deserve one of the awards.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 24/01/2010 00:54

I agree Bubba, I am sure any teacher would be flattered and touched. We are however well rewarded for out job, TAs are the silent forgotten army who do deserve the recognition.

mamazon · 24/01/2010 12:09

DS goes to THE most amazing school. His headmastter won head of the year in 07 i think.
and he absolutly deserved it. he is fantastic.

I have nominated DS teacher and DD teacher.

DD teacher was an NQT when she taught my son and she had to fight the rest of the teaching body in order to teach him. she did an amazing job.

Ds teacher is just fantastic. he is nothing like any teacher he has known before and he really has helped him so so much.

potatofactory · 24/01/2010 12:11

Maybe don't comment, then, tatt.

Peachy · 25/01/2010 12:13

Have nominated the techer who runs ds3's SNU and ds1's LSA: we have had many teachers over the years and they are stand out brilliant.

Thank you for your comments about the Teaching Awards. We often hear amazing stories about the inspirational and dedicated people working in schools who make an enormous difference to young lives. Our work is to give recognition to these people on a national level, and in doing so highlight the value of education in our society.

The Teaching Awards are open to everyone in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. There are twelve award categories including the Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year, to acknowledge the vital role of support staff. Thank you for the pointer on our school records, we will get busy updating them.

We do hope that you can take the time to nominate for the 2010 awards ? we know that it makes a huge difference to those who receive a ?thank you? for all their hard work and dedication. Nominate at: www.teachingawards.com/celebrate/
The deadline for nominations is 1 March 2010.

Daniel Kinge did receive a commendation in the category for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year in 2004 after being evaluated through written evidence and observation at school and in the classroom. When he was later convicted we could only share the great sense of sorrow, betrayal and shock that must be felt by his ex school community, family and friends. It is a great tragedy and more so as it involves children and a member of the teaching profession.

Thank you
From the Teaching Awards team
