Please may we have a weather section.

Dear MN, please may we have a weather section. I think people find it pretty useful when the weather is going up the spout to have a place that they can talk about it.

Though I often start threads, as do others, when there are weather warnings issued or when it looks like the weather might get 'interesting' they tend to go missing in the general noise and chat of MN.

I realise that sometimes it would go very quiet in the section but if all the weather threads are in one place then people can find them when they are needed.

Thank you

Yes to a weather section!

Our weather is getting more extreme - with major floods/heatwaves/snow events every year now. If we had a place where warnings could be posted, and people could put local updates on, it would be both interesting and useful.

For example, I need to go to Brum on Friday - it would be good to be able to post and see if MNetters on the route there could tell me what the conditions are like on the ground, so I can see if it is safe to travel.

I always look out for OYBBK's posts and the subsequent convos as they give a heads up on things, often earlier and more reliably than the Met office stuff. It can be quite a pita to find them though, so a weather section would be great .

We will always be eternally grateful to OhYouBadBadKitten for her weather advice earlier on this year. She forecast some very heavy rainfall for our area (which we heeded even although the weather looked fine), baled up our straw and hay in record time and only lost the last two bales to one of the worst floods Perthshire has seen for several years.

If we had not acted then we would have lost the entire crop, the animals would not have had winter feed and we would have been ruined.

I nominate her for a Mumsnet Sainthood on the strength of her warning.

Another vote for a MN weather section.

MerlinsBeard · 29/12/2009 11:42

Please please please please. I will make cakes .....cupcakes .... chocolate ones ... with vanilla frosting (or chocolate if that's not too sickly!)

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 29/12/2009 13:26

It's fascinating the different weather that can be had across britain as well, so would be very interesting, as well as very helpful!

peachygirl · 29/12/2009 13:34

yes please it's a current obsession of mine too.

PrivetDancer · 29/12/2009 13:36

yes, i think it's a good idea too. Also.. is it going to snow properly (and stick!) near aylesbury today?

petunia · 29/12/2009 14:43

Privet, are you covered by the updated met office weather warning?

PrivetDancer · 29/12/2009 15:18

Ooh yes, we are orange! On the edge though, so I'm not counting on getting snowed in..

ABetaDad · 29/12/2009 15:34

They promised snow where we are today and went and bought the kids some sledges. No sign of it. I am going to have to become an avid reader of the OPs threads.

WilfSell · 29/12/2009 15:36

See, now we are completely covered and surrounded by the 'be prepared' bit of that new flash warning. But I'm buggered if I believe it yet, given we've had a few flakes and they've disappeared into rain.

Is it REALLY going to cool down enough for snow? And the rain currently is quite light.

I've got my shovel and candles all ready and waiting but being snowed in looks very unlikely currently where we are...

nickelbabyjesus · 29/12/2009 15:38

i want a weather topic too!
add me to the petition.

brilliant idea.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 29/12/2009 18:05

Sorry about people who had hoped for snow today, most ended up on the wrong side of marginal. discussion here if you missed it

Me too! I spend 90% of my time outdoors so it is very useful to me.

MaureenMLove · 29/12/2009 20:29

One small thing. Sometimes, just sometimes, Kitten is a bit, well, Michael Fish like!

She once told me, I was in for a heavy frost. That was 1st February. If anyone remembers that night, it was the night the whole country shut down, due to copious amounts of snow!

Still love you though Kitten!

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 29/12/2009 20:31

Yeah, she told me I'd have snow today.

Cow.

snorkie · 29/12/2009 20:36

I'm in - a weather topic with badkitten presiding sounds great.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 29/12/2009 22:47

Thank goodness for a bit of reality Mo!

Can I ask when the next warmish spell happens, please?
We have battened down the hatches after more snow today although the temperature has risen slightly. I have not seen anyone for days (apart from husband and children).

There are going to be floods when the snow melts.....

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 30/12/2009 19:58

I'm afraid I can't see it on the cards for the forcastable future GentleOtter, I've looked at loads of charts and it seems to stay cold right out until the 14th.

I use a different forum for my weather obsession but would love to have a place on Mumsnet to discuss it, so I'm all for a weather section.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 31/12/2009 17:38

Excellent

Yes please.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2010 12:22

Bit worried that there's a small possibility that you might not be able to get back into the office on Monday! There might be some significant snow round the London area Sunday night!

Wouldn't that be ironic
