A pedantic point

Ellbell · 29/06/2005 13:11

OK, OK, I know this is pedantic, but it annoys me every time I see the MN home page... I've been trying to resist posting for ages, but I just can't resist...

The plural of 'mother-in-law' is 'mothers-in-law', and definitely not 'mother-in-laws'....! Can it be changed?

hia ellbell- email mumsnet hq- [email protected]

motherinferior · 29/06/2005 13:26

NO! That's TERRIBLE!

I think we pedants deserve an apology. I'm with you all the way, Ellbell.

edam · 29/06/2005 13:28

I'm with you Ellbell. Capable of typos myself, of course, but have this strange urge to go through MN with red pen correcting incorrect use of apostrophe and mis-spelling... might be thrown out if I did, though.

JustineMumsnet · 29/06/2005 13:28

Sorry! You're quite right - will change immediately.

Davros · 29/06/2005 22:50

I had noticed it too Ellbell, for raising it!

slartibartfast · 29/06/2005 22:57

I vote two tablespoonsful of gripe water for the pedants :-)

QueenEagle · 29/06/2005 23:03

Eats shoots and leaves

Have you got it?

Ellbell · 29/06/2005 23:14

QE... I don't need it!

moondog · 29/06/2005 23:20

While we at it, 'Classifieds' (sic) is a bit dodgy......

QueenEagle · 29/06/2005 23:21

LOL @ Ellibell

I drive my dh to distraction pointing out grammatical errors!

moondog · 29/06/2005 23:23

Errrrrr....while we're at it that will be...

(Used to have a bf who despite being a brilliant physicist was an appalling speller. For a laugh,I used to get him to do dictation. My favourite to send him into a spin was 'They're over there with their mothers' friends!')

Ellbell · 30/06/2005 12:42

Yay! It has already been changed! Pedants rejoice!

Who led the Pedants' Revolt?

Cam · 30/06/2005 23:21

Oh god you would have to mention Clapham Junction. My dh, the ultimate pendant, claims that Clapham Junction may be the junction where the most trains pass through but cannot be the busiest station because it is not the station where most people get on/off [what is he on about emoticon]

He says the meaning of the word station is paramount [I have to live with this guy emoticon]

He even argued with the quizmaster at the Brownies Quiz night about this very thing

hunkermunker · 30/06/2005 23:34

Nobody?

hunkermunker · 30/06/2005 23:37

Dammit - can't wait for you all to ask for the punchline, so here it is - not funny at all now!

Which Tyler

Cam · 30/06/2005 23:41

V. funny hunker, and can you believe that W Tyler lived in a farmhouse a couple of hundred yards from me?

hunkermunker · 30/06/2005 23:45

Ah, should have known you'd like it, Cam

Did he?! Wonder if he really was revolting? Sorry - far too late for me

Blimey Cam's DH... Not even I'm that pedantic!

While we're on London stations (not literally), can anyone tell me why Earls Court doesn't have an apostrophe and Baron's Court does? (Or is it the other way around?)

Mr Cam? Anyone?
