Need your thoughts for Radio London, please, about PETA's 'Baby P' poster

This PETA poster has been put up in Haringey, the borough where Baby P lived, by PETA, which campaigns for animal rights.

BBC Radio London wants to know your take on this. Do you think shock tactics in ads are acceptable?

Thanks in advance

It's sick. PETA are vile though, and I am not surprised.

I tend to boycott brands that go for shock tactics, although PETA isn't a brand, so doesn't apply in this case.

MmeGoblindt · 12/10/2009 15:28

Added to that is the question of what "animal abuse" is.

Someone who deliberately hurts animals.

Someone who neglects to feed their animals.

In PETAs eyes, someone who wears leather or tests cosmetics on animals.

The first one is perhaps a danger to other humans, for the last two that seems rather unlikely.

MaryBS · 12/10/2009 15:29

Just a thought, can we complain to the ASA about the ad?

TrillianSlasher · 12/10/2009 15:30

"In PETAs eyes, someone who wears leather or tests cosmetics on animals.

I think PETA are more of a danger to that last person than that person is to other humans!

NyeEve · 12/10/2009 15:31

PETA are wankers

jasper · 12/10/2009 15:42

PETA

Pathetic Extreme Twats Association

MmeGoblindt · 12/10/2009 15:43

Very true, Trillian.

A bit actually at that.

A organisation that does not draw the line at murder and arson using a murderer in an advert.

Very credible.

SolidGhoulBrass · 12/10/2009 15:49

Given PETA's long history of self-righteous misogyny, I'm only surprised that they didn't use a picture of Tracy Connolly instead.

LynetteScavo · 12/10/2009 15:52

Wow...I find that a bit hard hitting.
It's the kind of line of advertising I wouldn't be suprised to see the BNP using.

Doesn't make me sympathetic to peta, at all.

I find it tasteless and uncomfortable. Peta are abusing Baby P in their own way. I feel the poor child had no one to defend him when he was alive, adn no one to defend him now he is dead.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 12/10/2009 15:56

Cynical.

That is what the use of that image is.

Cynical exploitation of the image for effect (coverage)

It doesn't endear PETA to me at all

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 12/10/2009 16:06

Totally disgusting. Quite appalling tactics and reaffirms PETA as an organisation that has no notion of what is appropriate, sensitive and acceptable. Utterly hideous.

TrillianSlasher · 12/10/2009 16:08

Also did I mention that it's crap? Not only distasteful but actually not very good.

AvengingGerbil · 12/10/2009 16:16

They only need to put up one poster (esp in Haringey) as that guarantees mass media coverage of the issue without PETA having to spend a dime more.

We are helping them by having this discussion.

I suggest that Radio London treat the organisation with the contempt it deserves and ignore the poster completely.

squilly · 12/10/2009 16:42

I think it's inappropriate. The fact that he's an animal abuser is secondary to what he's renowned for and imo it's just shock tactics.

I don't like it.

It's visually unattractive, it's message is weakened, rather than strengthened by the Baby P link and I don't think it would do PETA any favours as an organisation.

AvengingGerbil · 12/10/2009 16:44

Bother. I thought I'd successfully killed this thread!

Highly inappropriate. PETA are trying to make political gain through an extremely tragic case.

And if I suspected anyone of animal cruelty, I would either call the police or the RSPCA. PETA in my mind are an aggressive organisation who use borderline terrorist activities to achieve their goals.

The memory of Baby P should never be used in any sort of political campaign. Actually, it makes me fecking angry that it has been.

FABIsInTraining · 12/10/2009 17:03

I bet they didn't expect this response when they contacted MNHQ.

Merely reinforcing my belief that PETA are a hysterical group of nutters with no fucking perspective - they are prepared to use an abused and murdered toddler's name in order to make people listen to their whines about cute little puppies. They can fuck right off.

Alarielle · 12/10/2009 18:03

I would find it less contraversial if it was by the RSPCA. Many sociopaths do start off abusing animals but seeing as this is made by PETA, they are probably putting me in that category because I enjoy a bacon sandwich. PETA use over the top message and have targeted children in the past with horrifying messages.

This is just as distasteful as previous campaigns.
