swearing/names

something has bothered me recently... i agree with the swearing policy, although I myself am not offended by swearing... i think it's a good idea...

but there is someone with a name that really bothers me... phucknuckle.

i don't know why it bothers me so much... but it does.... if you read this phucknuckle, it isn't personal!!!

But just was thinking... if it was spelled fucknuckle then people would complain... why is a ph different?

OP posts:
phucknuckle · 02/06/2005 17:01

No, I am going to slink back to my old name and pretend i know nothing about it.

because, inherantly, I am a bit of a coward

RTKangaMummy · 02/06/2005 17:04

I guess I never read it properly

what I mean is that I read it as a word like pumpernickle ie with a P

Never a PH or F

sunchowder · 02/06/2005 17:06

You little phucker you You don't have to change it you know! I was just giving you my impression and I probably wouldn't have said anything but the thread was here so.....please tell!!!

sunchowder · 02/06/2005 17:06

OK Kanga--I understand now.

darlingbud · 02/06/2005 17:08

My brother worked in a travel agent and a lady came in enquiring about the holiday in the window to go to F It!

She meant Phuket.

Thats how many people pronounce Ph.

Enid · 02/06/2005 17:09

yes i agree, horrible name

I thought it was a ManTroll tbh

RTKangaMummy · 02/06/2005 17:09

pmsl @ Phuket = F* it

RTKangaMummy · 02/06/2005 17:12

SC I suppose I should take more notice of names on here but tend to just read messages not the names unless someone says something like

"oh kanga said .......... " then I go to read what Kanga had said IYSWIM

I will have already read the thread but not who said what

sunchowder · 02/06/2005 17:15

I am guilty of this also Kanga! Some of the threads are so long I just start reading like mad and pay no attention to who has written them. But..most of the time I try to give attention to the names because I like to get the "know" the posters so that I can feel more connected. Love your name by the way!

RTKangaMummy · 02/06/2005 17:20

Thank you

It depends how much time I have really

Also if the thread is moving really really fast then it takes all my concentration to read fast enough to keep up IYSWIM

SoupDragon · 03/06/2005 13:09

How do you say elephant and phone then?

SoupDragon · 03/06/2005 13:11

Missed off the from the end

sunchowder · 03/06/2005 17:54

Good one Soupy!

colditz · 03/06/2005 17:55

dreadful name.

Tut tut, phucknuckle.

You should be ashamed of yourself, upsetting people like that!

RTKangaMummy · 04/06/2005 00:36

Sorry didn't see the question earlier

Telephone or phone with a fffff

but phuket with a poo

hunkermunker · 04/06/2005 00:38

I want to know who phucknuckle was!

Tortington · 04/06/2005 01:36

the ph instead of the F is the same as the * replacing the vowel in the profanity. the only reason i can remember being given for this introduction was that some kids sit on parents knees whilst they are on mumsnet and may read it - it hink this is a f8cking p8ss poor excuse and this attack on my personal expressionism by a site which frequently has one of the matriarchs posting when there is a ding dong along the lines of .....mumsnet isn;t into censorship ..now all be good and get along.... kind of thing has always reinforced my positive view of this site. however its all getting very f88king ars8y, in fact its getting right on my t8tties. becuase phrased correctly you can have any twutcocking word made into a fetwetting profanity.

its all gone pete tong

Nightynight · 04/06/2005 08:25

I'm lucky I read this thread before I've ever had to say Phuket.

WigWamBam · 04/06/2005 08:30

If your personal expressionism is so dependent on profanities then that's a shame. There are so many more expressive and less offensive words to use, far more creatively.

Heathcliffscathy · 04/06/2005 09:15

custardo, i am loving your post, and i swear like a trooper, but don't you think there is something particularly eughh about phucknuckle....the fist vagina analogy is actually what comes to my (filthy) mind and it's not that nice is it, out of context?

i'm not 'offended' per se, but think it's a relief that the poster didn't realise the connotations of the name when they started using it.

i'm not into censorship, and this is a site for grownups (there are far more important things that i'd be worried about ds seeing then the swearing on here tbh)....but that doesn't mean that i can't find something a big dubious does it?

Tortington · 04/06/2005 09:52

i think if profanities did not aptly describe how you feel, then they would be useless. i personally think they are sd good as any other dewcriptive word or phrase. to insinuate that becuase for instance i might say " i am very f*cked off today" rather than " i am upset /annoyed today" and that one phrase takes more brain power than the other is b8llocks. as is the limited vocab argument.

suzywong · 04/06/2005 10:27

Phuckknuckle, have you changed your name from a name of a person that likes to imitate others? (not getting at you just don't want to out you and I think I know who you are)

colditz · 04/06/2005 11:42

Okay it was me. Sorry.

I swear I did not realise that people would apply sexual connotations, although that's obvious in hindsight.

I just thought it was funny, is all.

colditz · 04/06/2005 11:42

And I wasn't trolling.

Dorrit · 04/06/2005 11:43

If phucknuckle is offensive what about some others? Snafu (an acronym for Situation Normal All Fcked U*p)? Is that less offensive?

Can't say either of these names bothers me, so I hope those who bear these names are not offended. I'm just making a point that perhaps telling people that their chosen names are offensive is in itself offensive.
