When should children lose their first milk tooth?

DD1 started school after Easter and, despite being the youngest in her class, she lost her first milk tooth today and all her classmates seem to have them very firmly in place. I've had a quick trawl round the internet and it seems that it's nearer to six when they should start falling out (DD is 4 3/4). Anyone with any ideas? They've been wobbly for about a month now.

And I'm absolutely inconsolable because I don't know where the tooth is .... sob sob.

my son lost 2 at the same age hes now 5 and lost a top front one and is taking ages to come out,my son had his teeth very early so that could be the reason why they fall early as well, dont worry

My dd's first tooth came out Last October when she was 5Yrs and 2 months, the next tooth came out in November and the third tooth in December. She now has another wiggly tooth but they tend to wiggle around for ages before the actually fall out and she always gets so cross about it all.
Also dd's friend lost her first tooth a couple of weeks ago at school and it fell out as she was standing next to a bin in the dinner hall. So they wrote a note to the tooth fairy explaining and the tooth fairy left a note saying that she had found it and not to worry

Carla, my ds lost his first at about 4.5yo too, earlier than everyone else it seemed. The health visitor just happened to call me when it happened and I asked if it was early but she didn't have a clue. I asked around friends though and they thought it was early but nothing to worry about so I haven't. I lost the first one too but we managed to keep the second and the third and fourth (which are just wobbly now he's 5.5) are promised to various family members since we don't have the toothfairy in our house

My daughter is 6 and has still not lost any. She swears one is loose but not so sure myself. But then she was over 12 months before she got any teeth! Think she is quite late in her class though. Don't want her to lose them yet, they're too cute.

I swallowed 2 of mine. Wouldn't fancy retrieving them for the tooth fairy -

I went to the dentist with my 7yo ds the other day. He still hasn't lost any milk teeth. The dentist told me the later the milk teeth coming through the older you are at losing the first ones.

Help! What is the going rate for the tooth fairy please? [Blush] Is 50p about right? Was pre-decimilisation and in old money when I lost mine!Have been met by blank stares when have asked elsewhere and six year old son is about to have big gap at front of his mouth. Grateful for any advice. Thanks

We have 20p in our house, but I think that's quite low.

SantaFio2 · 09/12/2004 16:15

my daughter lost two bottom ones at 4 3/4

SantaFio2 · 09/12/2004 16:15

My dd is 9 in february and has only lost 2 milk teeth. She wasn't late getting them in the first place either.

Mine is just coming up to 6 and has lost about six teeth in the past year. Think she was less than 5.5 when the first one came out, and she was the second in her class. Brilliant street cred in the classroom Grin .

I reckon 4 3/4 is a bit earlier than usual but not abnormally so IYKWIM - seems to vary hugely, from this thread. Maybe make an appt with dentist just to check?

dd1 swallowed her first tooth and also dropped and lost another one. In both cases we wrote a note to the Tooth Fairy explaining things, and she was fine about it. In our house the going rate is 50p if she swallow it/has someone else take it out for her, and £1 if she pulls it out herself. Being slightly squeamish, I find this to be a useful incentive!
