"remember me until I log out" - what the HELL does this mean?

Everytime I log in I wonder what this means.

I simply cannot work it out!

Is it just me?

It means you don't need to type in your name and password again unless you actively click the 'log out' button.

Hassled · 22/03/2009 20:40

It means what it says on the tin. Until you actually click on the logout button (top of the page, in the middle), you will be logged in. For months in my case.

mumonthenet · 22/03/2009 20:44

ah..

you mean at the bottom of where i'm typing now my nick and password are already there?

but I normally say "no".

Well, I don't say no but no is the default answer.

IME it means

Remember me until you log on from elsewhere i.e. cybercafe, mate's house, parents' house

mumonthenet · 22/03/2009 20:47

Hang on a minute, maybe no means as hassled suggests, that when I shut down the puter I won't be logged in next time I come on.........until I log in again.

I haven't had to log in in months because I ticked yes. It really is remembering me until I log off!

mumonthenet · 22/03/2009 20:49

but sue, what does "remember me" mean? Who's remembering me? the puter or the site or what?

god, sorry to be so pedantic «nips off for another glass of wine in the hope that alcohol will help»

It is your computer that remembers you - a cookie stores itself on your computer and this lets the site know you're logged in.

FAQinglovely · 22/03/2009 20:51

ahh - but if you click "remember password" on your computer it does that for you too

SoupDragon · 22/03/2009 20:51

It also remembers to send you a card on your birthday, Christmas and anniversaries, as well as mothering sunday/father's day as appropriate. If you log out, it behaves like a child who has left home and ignores you unless it wants money or a lift.

Belgianchocolates · 22/03/2009 20:52

lol SoupDragon

SoupDragon · 22/03/2009 20:53

No, FAQ, that just remembers your password. It doesn't log you in. I think MN will not show any of your viewing preferences until you are logged in.

nickytwotimes · 22/03/2009 20:55

It's the words of Christina Rossetti were she writing now.

mumonthenet · 22/03/2009 20:59

soup,

thanks, girls, for trying to explain. Not sure I understand yet(and am not usually thick!).

Had brilliant thought, am going to be really daring and click yes next time I log in and see what happens!

Nicky - you're right, was Rossetti. My favourite sonnet.
