Shoplifter's corner

We can hide threads in certain sections (like the for sale threads). It'd be good if you would set up a shoplifter's corner which could also be hidden.

Every month or so we get threads from someone inadvertently (or not) stealing a product from a shop.

Then lots of posters appear saying that they don't think it is illegal unless the shoplifting is intentional. Which is complete nonsense.

The benefit to the rest of us of having a shoplifter's corner is that we can hide the whole topic, and the shoplifters can talk amongst themselves without disturbing anyone's peace of mind.

Please make it so, dear MN.

Hear, hear.

Always shocked about those on here who seem to be able to justify stealing.

KatyMac · 25/11/2008 23:04

Oh I agree

Can we add benefit fraud to it?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 25/11/2008 23:06

whose been stealing grapes this time?

I thought you had to have mens rea and actus rea or whatever (guilty mind and guilty act)to be found to have commited a crime (old a level) so really it would have to be intentional to be a crime or there would be no guilty mind?

SneakerPimp · 25/11/2008 23:07

quattro,

fabuloso,

give it back,

every penny,

what goes around...

KatyMac · 25/11/2008 23:07

I don't think the crime is in inadvertently taking

It's when you don't return it when you realise your mistake

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 23:12

i stole a car but didnt notice as i was sat in it at the time.oh well.

i think shoplifters corner is fab idea.

katymac-thats what i said.if they realise their 'mistake' and make it right then it is a mistake.if they steal but think oh never mind.thats theft.

Quattrocento · 25/11/2008 23:12

Me? Cheeky thing.

I have committed a crime though. I am hoping that the pedants don't catch me. You won't tell them, will you.

It should be shoplifters' corner of course.

I plead that I was carried away by a flood of (self)righteous indignation.

I like that idea.

I asked my sister about what Tesco theft rate is, I won't mention it because I don't want anyone using it to justify anything, but it did surprise me.

You are allowed to try a grape from a bunch to make sure they're OK but that's totally different from actually munching grapes and I'm never sure which one people are actually complaining about.

sunnygirl1412 · 25/11/2008 23:22

The first time that I said anything like this, I was given a lot of stick and told I needed to 'get a life'. I'm bloomin' glad I'm not the only one who thinks that taking something can be accidental, but keeping it when you realise you've got it, is wrong.

fruitstick · 25/11/2008 23:26

I once took something back to M&S that my DS had swiped into his pushchair (had got back to the car before I realised).

The shop assistant looked at me like I was crazy and didn't quite know what to do!

The smug feeling of self-righteousness was worth it though!

Quattrocento · 25/11/2008 23:27

Maybe it should be a thieves' corner? A broad church encompassing shoplifters, benefit fraudsters and fraudulent insurance claims. As well as catburglers and housebreakers obviously but I haven't seen too many of those on MN.

It would be a very comfortable place with armchairs and the thieves could chat amongst themselves without fear of the sanctimonious getting all uppity.

What say you MN>

But I do like a good shop lifters thread, it makes me feel like I can show my moral high ground.
Was talking about one at work the other day and I mentioned about how eating in grapes was a big subject on here, and it turned into such a debate with me shouting "buts its STEALING!"

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 25/11/2008 23:32

Rather than "shop lifters corner" which could give the wrong impression, but a "moral/ethics" section?

TinkerBellesMum · 25/11/2008 23:35

Elf, a quality control grape or munching on them?

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 23:36

pmsl at elf taking it to work!

KatyMac · 25/11/2008 23:36

But does "moral/ethics" have a religious/spiritual tone?

If it's 'stealing' call it 'stealing'

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 23:38

shoplifters corner with big flashing arrows pointing to it.and a siren that goes off everytime someone posts there sin.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 25/11/2008 23:43

lol, half my conversations start as "on mumsnet..."!

I dont eat grapes in the supermarket, I just take my chance on them when I buy them.

I will let DD eat a sausage roll or some raisens from a priced pack but never anything that gets weighed.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 25/11/2008 23:47

Oh I always let the dds eat packaged things around the shops and then pay for the empty pack its the only way to keep them quiet sometimes and I can't cope food shopping with screeching children in tow. But no nothing weighed though dd1 tells me that Janjar lets her eat the pick and mix in Asda

Tortington · 25/11/2008 23:48

i think we should have a sanctimonious wankers corner

....anyone lost a halo?

Quattrocento · 25/11/2008 23:50

Mine's still firmly attached to my head Custy.

Well it slipped a bit - I have been teasing the loon again.

OP posts:
TinkerBellesMum · 26/11/2008 00:42

I find often it's the only way to get Tink to eat to let her eat out the trolley, but not weighed items. You are allowed to have a grape to make sure they're OK, but it's different to feeding the LO with them!

When I was little shops used to weigh and print a sticker when you picked up weighed items, so much easier.

hannahlouhoo · 26/11/2008 00:52

i go to asda most weeks and if ds doesnt swipe something (without me seeing) i'm most disapointed!!

I must have no morals!!!

dont like grapes!!

sunnygirl1412 · 27/11/2008 09:24

I'm sorry, but are you being serious, hannahlouhoo? I don't know how old your ds is, but do you want him to grow up thinking it's ok to swipe things from shops? Will you feel the same when he's been collared for shoplifting - because his mum's never taught him that it's not ok to take stuff without paying for it?

When my ds2 was about 3, we found that he'd put a toy in the buggy in a toy shop, and hadn't told us it was there, so we hadn't paid for it. As soon as we realised, we took him back to the toyshop and made him hand it back to the staff and apologise.

hannahlouhoo · 27/11/2008 11:55

Hes 8 months! and no i'm not being serious!

although i have given him stuff to play with and then forgotten and gone home with it!

Mabye he will be collered for shoplifting, then this post will come back to haunt me!
