Censorship - Why are the Steiner threads being deleted and everyone being banned?

barking · 07/07/2008 20:09

Can someone please explain to me what is going on?

I have asked MNHQ the following questions but have had no response

I had read on another thread that the reason was due to posters not contributing to other threads - can someone explain as I see plenty of examples of parents using only one topic and there isn't an issue with removing them.

Why was there no warnings given?

There have been other posters banned before for saying much worse and later reinstated

If someone is threatening mumsnet, can you please tell us what exactly for?

Is there such a thing as liability insurance we can agree to take out?

should be on MSN this evening all being well...

JustineMumsnet · 08/07/2008 09:20

That's it Scheherezade, and our infallibility too .

SheherazadetheGoat · 08/07/2008 09:20

well spotted oh wise one

BagelBird · 08/07/2008 09:21

Aha - thank you for the clarification Justine.
You clearly made a sensible call there

SheherazadetheGoat · 08/07/2008 09:21

psst! - i was user testing other parenting sites last week.

JustineMumsnet · 08/07/2008 09:26

Really - why?

SheherazadetheGoat · 08/07/2008 09:28

cos they gave me £50! my sister works in usability.

JustineMumsnet · 08/07/2008 09:31

Oh - do send us your thoughts when you get a mo!

SheherazadetheGoat · 08/07/2008 09:40

only if you send me £50!

theSuburbanDryad · 08/07/2008 10:08

I'll do it for £45

Boco · 08/07/2008 10:15

I'll do it for £30 and a mars bar.

WideWebWitch · 08/07/2008 10:16

Good call Justine. Anyone who remembers the time, effort and drama associated with the last public legal action threatened against mumsnet will find your stance completely understandable I think.

SheherazadetheGoat · 08/07/2008 10:16

you get what you pay for!

don't give boco a mars bar she will become obese and david cameron will lock her up.

northernrefugee39 · 08/07/2008 11:29

If mumsnet are receiving emails from sweden from someone threatening them with percy bratt, I understand why they're forced to adopt this stance.
It really saddens me that free speech is being stopped like this, with threats; the threats imply that what's being debated is near the bone, or they wouldn't go to such lengths.
Justine you said
"Similarly we've suggested that the pro-Steiner lot follow up their complaints with the individuals involved rather than Mumsnet but again they seem reluctant."
I never saw that suggestion, where was that? Who was reluctant?
Unfortunately, individuals against large organistations are hard pressed; you have to have money to fight as an individual.
Didn't someone mention a big pay off on one of these threads?

so is steiner/waldor/anthroposophy now a taboo subject on MN?

Northernref have been reading the link you put on here, and it is really quite disturbing, so much I can relate to, and I shall continue to read more. I was involved in Anthroposophical nursing, don't wish to say much more than that. At the time, we used to laugh so much and think these people were 'away with the fairies' with their cranky ideas, and used to joke that it was a cult, but having read some of the stuff, I think it is more sinister than that.

lulumama · 08/07/2008 17:01

we talk about free speech, but really there are consequences to things that are possibly libellous or could lead to legal action. mumsnet is a business, and has to protect itself from potentially being finished by a costly legal action , which almost did happen.

i think MNHQ have been perfectly fair and let this go on for a loooong time. but there comes a point where the risks of what is being said - risks to peoples livelihoods in essence, outweigh the benefits of unrestrained , debate

Crikey, Percy Bratt IS actually a lawyer.

northernrefugee39 · 08/07/2008 17:31

Thanks for your comments forever and justa. I think it became impossible when it wasn't just parents talking about their experiences tbh.

lulu, I do agree in theory you know. In this instance though, I think it's a game being played out.

Forever, not sure what link you're referring to as mumsnet are deleting any that are reported to them, whatever they say it seems.
Anyway, if it was the link to our story of what our kids went through, what can I say?

Things are moving in other places at the moment which is really good.
Can't say more atm.

barking · 08/07/2008 17:40

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about Percy Bratt
I thought it was a made up name, I dare not say anymore
I shall go away now and be good

In hindsight, I think the person from Sweden who likes steiner very much should have been banned much earlier, then the debate would have stayed within the boundaries of our experiences.
