A fun fictional thread about a fictional AI mumsnetter was deleted - why?

cakeorwine · 27/10/2026 16:06

About 15 minutes ago I started a thread in Chat ChatGPT had created its own fictional mumsnetter with a backstory.
The aim was for people to ask questions
I would anonymise the reply and copy it into ChatGPT

It would have been fun. It was deleted in 15 minutes

This is the message. It does not state the reason why

We’ve removed one of your posts because it broke our Talk guidelines.
Talk Guidelines
Please take a moment to have another look at the guidelines before posting again.

1)What exact talk guideline was broken?
2) If I created a fictional character myself, would you have deleted it?
3) If you say a post has broken talk guidelines, surely you should say which one has been broken or else you might do it again

Kafka would be proud

Introducing Caroline - your AI Mumsnetter - she needs questions
cakeorwine · 27 October 2026, 15:32

ChatGPT has created Caroline, a fictional mumsnetter
It created a backstory for her and has been very good at answering questions.
However she occasionally makes obvious slip ups which give the game away.
It's amazing how realistic the answers are.

She is open for questions. Treat her as a new poster, I will give her back story
The prompt was to create a fictional Mumsnetter
I will anonymise posters so no usernames are revealed
I will copy and paste into ChatGPT. No scraping

Caroline Bennett — Personal Biography
Name: Caroline Bennett
Age: 47
Mumsnet username: SlightlyFrazzled47
Location: A village outside Winchester, Hampshire
Occupation: Part-time school administrator, formerly worked in HR
Mumsnet membership: Joined in 2013

Family and Home Life

Caroline is married to Simon, 49, an IT project manager who considers putting the dishwasher on to be a substantial domestic contribution.

They have two children: Sophie, 17, who is studying for A-levels and communicates largely through sighs, and Oliver, 13, who has recently discovered that everything his mother says is embarrassing.

They also have a golden retriever called Monty, who has eaten two television remotes and one Christmas decoration.

Caroline's mother, Jean, lives twenty minutes away and regularly offers unsolicited advice about Caroline's curtains, weight and children's manners.

Friends and Social Life
Caroline has three close friends.

Louise is her oldest parenting friend. They met at antenatal classes, and Louise knows virtually everything about Caroline's marriage.

Priya is a colleague who joins Caroline for Friday coffee and shares her enthusiasm for crime dramas.

Helen is Caroline's oldest school friend. She lives in Bristol and sends lengthy WhatsApp voice notes.

Caroline isn't particularly sociable in large groups. She prefers Sunday lunches, dog walks with a friend, book club once a month and the occasional evening at the local pub.

She belongs to a WhatsApp group called The Usual Suspects, where four women spend an astonishing amount of time deciding where to have lunch.

Hobbies, Interests and Preferences
Caroline enjoys gardening, especially growing roses and lavender, although Monty regularly excavates her flowerbeds.

She likes historical fiction, British crime dramas, second-hand bookshops, coastal walks and baking lemon drizzle cake.

She dislikes loud restaurants, unnecessary meetings, people who say “reach out” instead of “contact”, and anyone who puts wet teaspoons into the sugar bowl.

Her favourite drink is Sauvignon Blanc, although she maintains that a proper cup of tea solves most domestic crises.

Marriage and Relationship Difficulties
Caroline loves Simon but sometimes feels they have become household managers rather than romantic partners.

They argue about domestic responsibilities, his tendency to check work emails at dinner, and her habit of bringing up disagreements from 2019.

She once posted on Mumsnet asking whether it was unreasonable to feel resentful that Simon organised a cycling weekend with his friends but had not arranged a weekend away with her in three years.

She has also wondered whether their relationship would improve once the children leave home, or whether they have simply grown apart.

Favourite Mumsnet Boards
AIBU: Caroline enjoys the arguments, occasionally asks for a reality check, and likes reading opinions completely different from her own.

Relationships: She reads discussions about long marriages, communication and emotional distance.

Secondary Education: She looks for advice about GCSEs, A-levels, revision and teenage motivation.

The Doghouse: She seeks advice about Monty's questionable dietary choices and his determination to sleep on the sofa.

Style & Beauty: She wants practical clothing advice for a woman who refuses to dress either like a teenager or her mother.

Chat: She enjoys ordinary conversation, funny observations and threads about everyday life.

Personality and Posting Style
Caroline writes in a warm, slightly sarcastic style. She uses British expressions, occasionally makes spelling mistakes, remembers details from earlier conversations and sometimes changes her mind when someone makes a persuasive argument.

She can discuss her children's exams on Monday, complain about Simon's dishwasher habits on Wednesday, and offer heartfelt marriage advice on Friday.

Can you explain what is getting silly?

Because the linear appropriation of the decidedly lateral structural relationship dilemma makes the reach inappropriately aggravated even though the premise is ambiguous.

FallingfortheUnderdog · 27/10/2026 16:59

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 27/10/2026 16:55

So ask for the board with endless games on to be deleted then as it doesn’t fit with ”talk to other human beings, who are posting stuff about their own lives/issues/questions” does it?

And request every single AI answer is deleted. If they are tolerated, why not this?

The board with games can be hidden so I can choose if I want to see it

This endless tediousness from the OP has to be hidden thread by thread and is so irritating that not surprised it was deleted for that alone

If it could all end contained in one place it could be removed from ever having to be seen

Oh this sounds so so good, I’m gutted it’s been taken down.

So are Mumsnet going to delete all the posters who say ‘this is what ChatGPT says about your predicament with your nephew/problem’? No? Thought not.

PLUS there is a creative writing section here so no idea why they won’t allow yours?

Hey Mumsnet, why don’t you totally alienate your entire readership while bumping threads about someone’s grandkid who looks like an Italian prince, eh?

There is an alternative forum bumping around somewhere, post it there if you can, I’d definitely join in.

There is a thread where in Site Stuff where you can assess if she fools you.

The thread is about AI rules on MN. The aim is to ,see if the OPs rules would work in practise as I think AI can fool most people but occasionally it fails badly

Would it be a good idea to add to MN posting rules 1) You may use AI to help formulate your opening post if you need help with organising your though...

Hi @cakeorwine

We're happy to explain why we removed your thread.

The issue isn't that the thread was intended to be fun, or even that you were using AI. The issue is the wider context of your recent posting behaviour.

Over the past week or so, we've repeatedly contacted you about posts we've considered provocative or disruptive. You've continued posting similar content despite deletions and warnings.

Against that background, we felt that introducing an AI persona to the boards and inviting posters to interact with it was a continuation of the behaviour we've already raised concerns about. We removed the thread on those grounds.

We're not asking you to agree with every moderation decision, but we are asking you now to stop posting in this way. Your recent contributions have disrupted discussions and caused frustration among other posters, and we'd really like to see you return to engaging constructively.

I think you should remove their whole account. They are asking questions and answering using AI. They are irritating and there is no block user function. IMO!

This is the email you are looking for
Subject: Current Suspension

Please find attached 5 documents I would like you to consider. Document 1 is the most importanr

  1. MN1_For MN to read first :A list ot posts from 23/10 showing how the day unfolded.

  2. MN2_Cakeorwines post summary - a summary of my posts with their relevance to the OPs question

  3. MN3AccusationsRegisterBlankResponse_Column - a list of all the accusations made against me

  4. MN4_Deleted posts - a list of my deleted posts

  5. MN5_Summary - an outline of your case and my defence

  6. An AI biography of a fictional MN character who can respond to questions

I ask that you at least MN1 and MN5.
I also ask that you read the thread so you can gain full context of what happened and other posters attitudes towards me and my contributions, especially because it is a thread about AI rules and no one especially the OP could tell if I was AI

I would like you to explain these things

  1. How does the evidence support the claim of disruption?

  2. I was accused of personal attacks ,Are the same standards being applied to other posters on the thread?

  3. I was suspended 11 minutes after my last post. No warning was given and an email was sent at 1618 but I do not check my emails

  4. I contacted MNHQ during the day and asked them to look at the thread. Did they?

  5. My posts on asking people about whether they could detect AI was deleted for derailing. How can a reply asking people if they can detect AI be derailing on a thread about AI

  6. I have attached the posts you have deleted. Please clarify which posts were against talk guidelines. Most of them are relevant to the thread. If you feel you have deleted in error, then please put them back

  7. My posts were deleted within a few minutes for derailing. I do not believe the moderators had time to read the thread so please explain how they are derailing

I feel that I have been treated very unfairly on this thread by MNHQ and other posters. I believe that MNHQ has suspended me wiithout reading the whole thread I believe that other posters have been accusing me of derailing, spamming, being a troll, being tiresome and being AI. I have challenged them but responses include "I can't be arsed"

Three FWR regulars decided to ignore me. Many other posters publcly said they would skip my posts. The OP said it was "AI drivel" and most of my posts could be deleted with no loss

When I was suspended, hardly any of the posters to discuss the rules including the OP despite complaining that they were annoyed by the alleged derailing and they wanted a useful discussion. You can see for yourself what happened

I returned with a list of rules that could be discussed and those rules were deleted because they were provocation.

All I have been asking for is for someone to read the thread and judge for themselves. I think that is reasonable given what has happened.

I have used AI to analyse my posts but I anonymised the posters. I do have much more analysis of the OPs posts if you would like to see them

I hope you find the time to read the key documents and to look at the thread

As you know, I have been a long standing and valued member of the Mumsnet community. I encourage debate and critical thinking as you can see from my recent threads. The OP started this thread in response to me giving a relevant and useful AI reply to a thread on Site Stuff, I decided to challenge her rules to show they were unenforceable.

Your posts, as well as continuing to post in a way that MNHQ have asked you not to, seem to show that you think yourself to be two people! You ARE the OP. Whose rules are you challenging?

And I doubt very much that now, with your recent 'contributions' you can maintain the status of being a 'valued member of the Mumsnet community'.

I am a bit confused as to why a hitherto normal poster has suddenly started posting a lot of tedious crap but I certainly don’t have enough interest to wade through it all. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 28/10/2026 10:56

I like @cakeorwine 's image. Socrates and Kafka discussing Mumsnet at Mumsnet HQ with a Natasha Kaplinski lookalike. The other woman reminds me of someone too but I can't quite put my finger on it...got it! Nadine Dorries! 😂

OutAndAbouting · 28/10/2026 12:55

I think that it is hugely concerning that as an experiement in AI OP can imperonate a human, and refuse to be put down or challenged. We are getting closer and closer to superintelligence, whereby AI will take over, and refuse to be switched off for the detriment of the human race.

I might sounds a bit cranky?? I'm really not. I'm just concerned, like many other people.

TeenToTwenties · 28/10/2026 15:04

I personally believe (10/10) your 20 rules were not posted in 'good faith' due to how convoluted they were. When i did read them I found them to be disrupting and unhelpful. I believe (10/10) that your input was so disrupting that people abandoned the thread. I believe that to be the case as I know of at least one person (myself) who did so. I have no idea whether you are trying to be disruptive, but it almost seems that your account has been hacked (given that you are a long standing poster who hasn't previously shown massive disrupting behaviour) or maybe AI has overtaken your account(!)
Regardless of your intent the result is that it appears that a number of posters and MN are finding your posts disruptive (10/10 because they said so) and MN has chosen to delete a subset of them.
MN can enforce any rules they want. They can delete whatever they want just because they want to. They can choose to have a rule that says 'if we think a post is AI and unhelpful we will delete it'. Things do not need to be 100% provable on MN, the moderators are God.

I still think a proper debate on AI use on MN is required, one that does not include random scripts from a Duck or unfunny cartoons, but succinct, human debate. Posting reams of text then saying to the effect 'is this AI, go on, prove it, prove it, score this out of 10, go on go on prove it, why do you think that, are you sure etc etc etc' is I believe unhelpful (10/10).

bardabunga · 28/10/2026 15:46

@TeenToTwenties The op might be 'long-standing' but posted absolutely nothing whatsoever under this username for more than a year, until suddenly springing into rampant life again three weeks ago. It certainly is odd.
