What do newer users need to know about trolls and bans?

I am on a thread that has evidently attracted trolls. I don't want to report because ....

A few months ago I got a 48 hour ban because I upset trolls.

What is the situation about trolls on MM? I have seen a couple of mentions that have been indirect about mentioning trolls and bans for mumsnetters.

I am a relatively new user so what am I missing / do I need to know?

Hi @catspyjamas1

You're always welcome to report a post or poster if you're concerned they're not genuine - we'd much rather you let us know so we can take a look behind the scenes.

What we ask people not to do is call someone a troll, or speculate publicly on the thread about whether they're genuine. That's because it's very difficult for users to know for certain, and getting it wrong can be pretty horrible for a genuine poster as well as potentially derailing the whole thread.

So please don't worry that reporting suspected trolling will get you into trouble. If something doesn't feel right, report it and tell us why. Just to clarify, we wouldn't suspend someone simply for upsetting a troll. If you were suspended previously, it would have been because your posts broke our guidelines, and you would have likely received a warning from us well before it got to that stage. Though we're very happy to take another look if you think we got that wrong somewhere.
