RTFT!!!

MN Towers, save our sanity, please.

There must be some way of pinning a message at the top of talk boards (or even better individual threads) along the lines of:

Please use the 'read all' function to see the latest post from OP before contributing.

My personal addition to that would be:

Failure to do so, means that people who have bothered to follow the thread properly have to wade through endless, out of date and irrelevant advice and comments. Also, whilst you're at it, no need to 'quote all' if you are responding to the original message or general thrust of the thread. If you repeatedly offend, we will internally amend your username to incude the letters RTFT at the end, and will, after three violations, ban you from Talk for at least a week...

But even just the one line would be better than nothing.

PLEASE

I genuinely can’t understand the thinking behind people who post a basic response like ‘yeah he needs to go, end it and block OP’ to the OP’s initial post when a thread has had like 500 plus comments.
Even if they don’t know the option to read all the OP responses existed do they really think they are adding anything of value or that wouldn’t have already been said (multiple times).

I doubt there is any thinking behind it tbh.

Thanks @Piknik - this is a common frustration for sure but we think your moderation solution might be a bit harsh 😀(or not). We'll have a chat about this and report back.

Can you at least make it so that posters can't quote the original post? I don't understand why that is necessary. Of course it's a response to the thread hence it's posted on that thread.

Portakalkedi · 19/08/2026 17:40

I would not bother with threads if I was told to RTFT. Most of them have too much irrelevant nonsense and derailing. If the OP is asking for advice and people are good enough to spend their time giving a response, then what's wrong with that? Otherwise they won't bother.

If people want to give helpful advice then surely they need to read all of the OP’s posts.
If you want to post based only on the first post then you are not interested in helping you are interested in posting.

Piknik · Yesterday 00:33

I'm not suggesting that everyone needs to obey. Or that RTFT is moderated or policed - just that a stickie reminding people that it's a good idea to at least read through the OP's posts before contributing, would prevent the endless pointless responses.

And maybe that's more important on some boards - Relationships / Health etc than others, but it's probably easier for it to be a blanket suggestion.

Failing to RTFT may drive some people insane, but maybe others are being driven insane by other posters ordering them about, and now ordering MN admin about!
I haven't read all of your other posts on this thread because I want to respond to this particular point. I really don't think that is an outrageous thing to do. We disagree but that's OK on a public forum.

And that's harmless in this context, but if you are on any of the health boards, or the relationship board or any post where someone is looking for support or advice in a situation that is evolving, you are no longer advising on anything that matters because the situation has changed. Therefore, pointless.

I quite enjoy noting the mners who are thick as mince.

When someone tells you who they are...

rubyrued · Yesterday 00:41

Comprehension is often lacking though because some posters dont even read the OP correctly

I would treat those threads differently. Some threads are just a chat where it's natural to dip in and out with thoughts and suggestions. Others are serious and need careful responses. Sometimes there's a value in repeating a point of view someone else has expressed, eg reinforcing that small acts of violence can escalate, and I don't find it annoying to see repetition.

Piknik · 19/08/2026 17:50

You don’t have to read the whole thread. Even without premium, there is an option to open “read all” of the original poster’s comments. Even reading the last two or three will give you an inkling of how things have progressed and stop you wasting time giving thoughts based on the original post when things could’ve moved on considerably.

Saying you can’t be bothered to read the thread suggests that you are one of those people that read the opening post, comment and move on. Whilst this is your right, It’s not helpful to anyone. Not helpful to the original poster whose circumstances have changed and not helpful to anyone on the thread who has to now wade through your irrelevant answer.

And in addition to situations moving quite quickly, sometimes posters do drip feed, because information they hadn’t felt was relevant suddenly feels more relevant, Or perhaps it took a lot for them to write the opening post and they weren’t quite ready to share everything.

Some drip feeds can be annoying, But actually, it’s often because the OP is starting to get clarity and confidence in sharing more relevant facts.

Anyway… Only five posts in and there’s already somebody who would benefit from a pinned message suggesting that they at least read OP’s latest comments

Thanks for assuming you know what I do. I am happy to 'see all' of the OP's comments if it is a topic of interest to me, and find that usually gives enough information to enable me to comment should I wish. I said only that I did not wish to read the full thread, which clearly include many repetitive and pointless comments.
BTW, MN won't do anything to make RTFT mandatory (not that it is even possible) as they clearly wish for the maximum number of respondents on each thread as this equates to more revenue.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 10:48

There’s your answer @Piknik. It happens and will continue to happen because people simply don’t care, they can’t be bothered to read other peoples posts but they don’t like it when people don’t read theirs.

Agree @Piknik

And if they post that 2 days after the OP has ditched & blocked the bastard, they just look stupid.

bitontheobtuse · Yesterday 10:56

Gwenhwyfar · 19/08/2026 17:39

Why not also tell OPs to include all relevant info in first post and not drip feed important things?

Sometimes it wouldn't occur to the OP to mention some things until a pp asks a question. Besides, it would make a lot of first posts too long.

Stopthattractor · Yesterday 10:58

Haven't RTFT but couldn't agree more. Did you think of including a message at the top of posts asking posters to RTFT before replying?

AMurderofMurderingCrows · Yesterday 11:04

If I were you I'd cancel the cheque...

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 11:56

Haven’t RTFT but just want to say…..listen to meeee meee meee.

Obviously I have read it. But ffs is what I’m thinking.

Id like to see mn edit an op's post if it turned out to be a reverse.

This was another tedious fucking reverse

Would do nicely.

RampantIvy · Yesterday 12:48

How about

"OP has updated. Please read updates before replying"?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 13:50

They do quite often comment when it is a reverse, and have a little thing at the very top ‘MNHQ have commented on this thread, click here to see comments’ or similar, but I don’t think it’s visible enough. I agree that adding into the OPs comment on the top line, in bold, would better so it’s literally the first thing you read.

I'd like to see them sticking to their own talk guidelines and banning reverse threads.

  • No trolling, misleading or deliberately inflammatory behaviour

The whole point of a reverse thread is to mislead everyone and yet whenever this is pointed out to MNHQ they say it's ok 🤷‍♂️

Piknik · Yesterday 14:05

Gah. I shouldn’t be surprised that there are people pushing back even though to me, it’s just common sense and courtesy.

Maybe these are the same folk who read a post saying “I am desperately worried about my DD’s health”

And then reply

”Hubby and me have always eaten a banana and a packet of Wotsits before breakfast and we’ve not had a medical issue between us in 30 years”’

Some people just like to spout.
