Can we have a Wanker's Corner?

onebatmother · 24/06/2008 13:29

Hello.

It's been noted in the past that there are some pretentious wankers amongst us who like to discuss some general subjects (eg.Porn, Religion) in a fairly, erm.. academic manner, and that this sometimes seems to intimidate and/or infuriate other posters.

There doesn't seem to be an easy solution to this problem: there's no doubt that people really do feel intimidated and that it might prevent them from posting on a subject that concerns them. It also must feel hijack-y at times.

At the same time, it's hard for the Wanker's to be told that they mustn't post anything that might intimidate.

Would it be possible to have a special place, with very hard chairs to keep us awake, that we may call our own?

I believe that is truly one for the connoisseur of the double entondra

Lol. A pair? Wow. The bind moggles.

tries to imagine bizarre two-pronged strap on device fails

Threadworm/Iorek Re Daniel Deronda. I hope you have both taken to referring to your handbag as your nécessaire? I have.

IorekByrnison · 12/08/2008 10:18

Of course. And if I wish to express my approval of Mr Iorek, I only ever say "He really is not disgusting".

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 11:02

And I have taken to contempering celerity with cunctation as a matter of course. I don't know how I managed before.

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 11:06

A small evil part of me thinks that if I was offered fine hunting horses and a champagne lifestyle, in return for being forced to wear diamonds and putting up with a few languid scathing remarks, I might be tempted to just suck it up, even if the OW had been cruelly left with just the one stately home, and that in the north.

But then I've never looked into Daniel's limpid eyes.

onebatmother · 12/08/2008 11:28

the north?! [shock

I refer to my handbag as my reticule.. I'm a good 50 years older than you modern ladies though, in my heart of hearts. barouches, etc..

OP posts:
Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 11:32

I should call mine my unnécessaire, given that it is full of old receipts and DSs' chewing-gum wrappers.

IorekByrnison · 12/08/2008 12:22

Ha! Mine too.

I am very envious of your barouche and reticule, onebat. George Eliot is rather modern.

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 13:22

Ha ha ha! Google is a prude. I googled "emma Bovary sex in carriage" to see if her amazingly raunchy piece of vehicular adultery took place in a barouche. Google primly said, looking at me over its spectacles, 'Did you mean "Emma Bovary sex in marriage"?'

Iorek, I loved that line about 'he really is not disgusting'

IorekByrnison · 12/08/2008 13:28

Brilliant. Bowdlerisation in the digital age: discuss.

It is a fantastic line. I think I love Gwendolen for all her preposterousness

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 13:31

Yes, I prefer her pre-conversion. She was magnificant, for all her faults. We have enough meekly good heroines. But she was very unhappy, I suppose.

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 13:33

Now, you implied earlier that good singers have to be somewhat ... I'm not sure ... craving of attention? showy? prima donna-ish? Whereas instrumentalists can be good and mild.

Is that right? And tell me, are you a Gwendolin? I would love to hear that you are imperious to your many fawning admirers.

IorekByrnison · 12/08/2008 13:34

She is still pre-conversion for me - I am reading in 10 minute chunks before I go to sleep. We may still be having this discussion in 2010.

IorekByrnison · 12/08/2008 13:53

I am not Gwendolen, although I always identify with GE's female characters however monstrous they are. Apart from the looks.

I'm not really that sort of singer. I just like the music - the rest is usually rather embarrassing. I might be a better singer if I were. But I think I know some who are a bit like this, and of course opera singers are always (unfairly) represented like this in literature/popular culture.

Intrumentalists have their instruments as a focus both for themselves and the audience, but singers have only themselves. It is an excruciatingly exposing business, and requires the presence of a particular persona to make it at all possible. I think perhaps it's in the creation of this persona that it can sometimes all go wrong.

Swedes · 12/08/2008 16:03

Iorek - I am full of admiration that you are able to absorb GE in ten-minute chunks. I read for about 15 minutes before my brain is receptive to the complex sentences; perhaps I should step out of my cage crinoline prior to reading?

IorekByrnison · 12/08/2008 16:57

Yes, it's one sentence a night in this house.

Swedes · 12/08/2008 17:30

Iorek. A sentence a night! Mr Iorek is disgusting.

onebatmother · 12/08/2008 17:31

My own cage crinoline has been pressed into service as an extension to our modest abode. A little papier mache et voila! A third bedroom!

Onebat, how ingenious. Does one need planning permission?

Swedes, I cannot think what lewd meaning you are intending, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to say it again.

He really is not disgusting.

onebatmother · 12/08/2008 20:50

I believe, Iorek, that Swedes implies that Mr Iorek's attentions occupy a deal of your time..

I'm off. for a week of, apparently, v wet French weather. TBH, and rather sadly, I'm not looking forward to it at all ..

but I will look forward to seeing you all upon my return.

Kx

Zut alors! Don't go. Come to Wales instead.

Often low expectations are a good thing in these circumstances and result in a happy surprise. I hope you do have a nice time after all.

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 21:07

The creation of a persona. Perhaps that is why Graham Johnson was so stern. When I read of his sterness in your earlier post I wondered why students had to be so cast down and humiliated. It would finish me utterly.

Threadwworm · 12/08/2008 21:11

Have a brilliant holiday onebat. Agree that low expectations are often a prelude to a very happy holiday.

policywonk · 12/08/2008 21:13

Oh yes, have a good time (if you're still reading this). It will be fantastic once you get there.
