MN site going into limbo - again!

IwantToRetire · 19/05/2026 17:44

I cant find the earlier threads on this and thought it had been sorted.

But same problem as before.

ie go to a thread or click on notifications, page starts loading and then it just hangs.

Sometimes page is only half load, sometime the whole page has loaded, but links aren't clickable.

Only option is to close site, and tab, and open in a new website.

Why has this started happening again.

Bad yesterday. Have only been on site about 30 minutes today, and it has happened 3 times.

IwantToRetire · 19/05/2026 18:18

Okay that's it. Not going to bother trying to use MN today.

Same old message:

This page is slowing down Firefox. To speed up your browser, stop this page.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 19/05/2026 18:25

As before this is happening because:

This message means a script (like an advertisement, animation, or tracker) on the website you are viewing is stuck or taking too long to load.

Firefox is warning you that the website is causing a performance bottleneck and is giving you the option to kill the script to restore normal browsing.

It’s your WiFi that’s likely the issue

No! As I posted it is about MN's web site. It is because:

the website you are viewing is stuck or taking too long to load.

It happened before, but then it is happening again.

If it was my wifi it would happen on other web sites I visit, but none of them do.

It’s the ads. It’s always the ads.

Why would the WiFi only have trouble with one website?

IwantToRetire · 19/05/2026 20:42

Although strangely on the days when it doesn't just grind to a halt and I am waiting, waiting, waiting to go to the link I have clicked on, at the bottom left of my screan I can see their internal links that it goes through before being kind enough to let me get to mt link, and the big delay is analytics.tiktok!!

???? Confused

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 19/05/2026 20:47

According to AI:

What it is: A website owner installs TikTok analytics to measure how successful their marketing campaigns are. Every time you click a page or take an action, the site fires a background request to send this data to TikTok.

Why the delay: Your browser essentially says, "I'll load the new page as soon as TikTok confirms they've registered this click." If TikTok's server is slow, your page load pauses.

How to block it: If you dislike third-party tracking, you can block these background requests using browser extensions like uBlock Origin, Adblock Plus, or built-in privacy tools on browsers like Brave Browser or Firefox.

Which may be true but why would MN have tiktok analytics installed?

OP posts:
shaylla · 19/05/2026 20:49

I use Adblockers and still get the slow load sometimes sadly.

IwantToRetire · 20/05/2026 17:30

I didn't change any of my settings, and found much later in the day yesterday that everything was fine!

Just started to check on notifications etc., today. Will see how it goes.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 21/05/2026 01:40

Today has been fine, until 5 minutes ago when I got the page slow to load

Have now looked at my cookies cache and mumsnet has triple the number of cookies saved to my browser, compared to other sites I visit regularly. (I cleared all cookies at the weekend.)

Have now blocked any mumsnet cookies from being saved and will wait to see what happens.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 21/05/2026 01:58

Well what happens is you cant sign into mumsnet.

So although free it now seems you have to accept and enourmous number of cookies.

This didn't happen before.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 21/05/2026 18:56

It definitely seems to be that it is the outrageous number of cookies mumsnet is inflicting on me as a user.

I have to keep clearling the cache for them

Over 1.7 mb in about 36 hours.

Other web sites I use are in the low kb.

So will have to clear again.

Or just give up.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 21/05/2026 19:03

@MNHQ isn't there an option on the web site to choose whether to just accept essential.

I dont know what changes have been made to the web site, but I have never had this overload of cookies being save to my web site.

Which as far as I can see I have to accept, if I want to post of forums.

OP posts:
pinkgown · 07/06/2026 00:57

This has been happening to me for the past couple of weeks as well on Firefox on my desktop. Mumsnet works OK on my tablet however.

IwantToRetire · 07/06/2026 01:05

Because Mumsnet prioritises loading complex background advertisements over user performance .....

Users - now your place

Settings to stop mumsnet slowing down browser

The "this page is slowing down your browser" warning in Firefox is triggered by bloated ad tracking scripts and memory leaks on the Mumsnet website, rather than standard login cookies.

Because Mumsnet prioritises loading complex background advertisements over user performance, Firefox triggers this bottleneck alarm to prevent your computer from freezing. You can fix this permanently in Firefox while remaining logged in by separating your core login details from the bloated tracking data.

Step 1: Install a Robust Ad Blocker

The absolute most effective way to stop the "slowing down your browser" message on Mumsnet is to block the poorly optimised ad scripts causing the error.

  • Install the official uBlock Origin extension for Firefox.
  • This extension completely prevents Mumsnet’s heavy scripts from executing in the background.
  • It eliminates the performance lag entirely while leaving your login status completely untouched.

Step 2: Clear Out Existing Sluggish Data

Sometimes, bad data gets stuck in your browser memory from previous sessions. You need to wipe the heavy data without deleting your saved password.

  • Open Firefox Settings (three horizontal lines in the top right → Settings).
  • Click Privacy & Security on the left menu.
  • Scroll down to Cookies and Site Data and click Clear Data....
  • Untick "Cookies and Site Data" (so you don't get logged out).
  • Tick only "Cached Web Content" and click Clear.

Step 3: Block Mumsnet Trackers but Keep Logins
To strictly stop Mumsnet from building up vast amounts of cookie data over longer sessions while ensuring you stay signed in, use Firefox's targeted exceptions.

  • In Privacy & Security, look under the Cookies and Site Data header.
  • Click Manage Exceptions... [1.1]
  • Type
  • https://www.mumsnet.com into the address bar.
  • Click Allow for Session. This ensures you stay logged into Mumsnet while your browser is open, but forces Firefox to automatically flush all of Mumsnet's heavy tracking baggage the second you close the browser tab or window.

...

At this point you have to ask is being able to use MN worth all this bother.

Particularly when no other web site makes you work this hard, just to be able to open a page let alone use a link!!

Thanks!
I will have a bash at those suggestions when I have a few hours to spare - or when I am feeling brave 🙂. Trouble is, you put something right and it makes another app glitchy.

Sorry should have said this is AI generated.

And with the best will in the world I am not sure that I want to spend that much time.

Last time I changed all the settings it worked for about 24 hours and then didn't.

So instead of me using mumsnet as and when I feel like it, I just occassional drop in and if there is too much nonsense going on I just dont bother.

For instance one day, there were so many grindings to a halt, and because on another thread someone had said about clearing cookies, I went to the settings and in one short session mumsnet had mega bytes of cookies.

I just dont understand.

Every day I use newspapers sites, and others funded by advertising and none of them do this.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 07/06/2026 01:50

And triple the number of cookies.

543 in the past couple of days!!!!!!!!!!

There is a quick and east way. Download DuckDuckGo and use it for MN. Everything is smooth, no ads, no pop ups, no tracking, no freezing.
And it is great for watching youtube without ads as well.

I know this has been said before, but seriously, how can a "reputable" web site, internationally known, not get to grips with it.

Talk about confirming to gender stereotypes that women just aren't very good at tech.

I use any number of web sites every day. Some powered by ads.

None of them have this problem

Who is it than MN has hired. I hope they are getting their money back.

Because if we all just block ads, and it is known we do it, they wont get any ad revenue and then they wont survive.

Aren't they at all humiliated by this.

Funnily enough AI included that as part of the problem. Prioritising advertisers over user experience!

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 08/06/2026 01:18

Well AI isn't being so harsh now.

I wont post all of its analysis, but says its (a bit like the NHS) having legacy code from its early days is another source of problems.

But also the fact that all posts are kept and are a searchable archive.

And so the web site is far more interactive than just going to a newspaper web site and reading an article.

ie looking up old treads, interacting through notifications, threads I started and so on.

So the actual forum structure in being both an historical resource and a current means of interaction makes users amount of "use" quite high.
