Hi I’m sorry to ask but there’s a thread from the sex topic showing up In the shopping but when you’re browsing another thread.

this is the thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/sex/5483454-dungeon-on-bookingcom and a screenshot is attached.

I thought the sex topic was supposedTo be excluded fromActive?

Thanks for flagging this to us, Windowseleventy - we're investigating this now and will get the thread removed from the Shopping box.

Thanks Jo. I did a double take!

It's not showing in mine so hopefully it's been removed! While we're on the subject - why is there a Shopping panel underneath Trending? Can we change it to another topic?

I was just thinking this today too about the shopping panel... I went through all my settings to see if it was something I had set up.

Hi all, the Sex topic isn’t excluded from the shopping box or Shopping tab on Active, just from Active threads. If you see a thread you think shouldn't be there, please let us know.

That’s gross. Sorry. But I don’t want to see sex threads when I am browsing at work or in front of my grandkids.

Why are you browsing openly in front of
your grandkids? It’s a site for adults.

I close the page down if my daughter sits next to me.

What about at work, in your lunch time?

A site for adults is not the same as an 'adult' site.

This is primarily a site for parents, who are adults, and are also highly likely to have children around while they are browsing. It is not unreasonable to expect the content here to be suitable for its target audience.

@BeckyAMumsnet I'm bored of saying it but I wish you'd just ditch the sex topic. It attracts all sorts of weirdos such as those who think anything not specifically for children should be 'anything goes'. Why can't we have a site that's for adults but which we don't have to worry about our children seeing? It's not like you can't find sex elsewhere online if that's what you want.

Many posters vociferously objected to the sex topic showing up in active threads and so it was removed. So why is it not excluded from the shopping tab which shows up on the same page?

Is this still a parenting site or is it now primarily for the sexposters with the parents kept onboard as a figleaf of respectability?

Windowseleventy · 02/02/2026 21:53

I wonder how much this is related to mumsnet being sold.

I mean, if I go on the BBC news website, for example, I would consider that a site for adults, i.e. it's not aimed at children. But I would not worry for a moment about 'browsing openly' or feel I had to close the page if there was a child around. Same goes for any mainstream media site.

So why does mumsnet, a parenting site, hold itself to such lower standards?
