Dear MNHQ,

Please improve your moderation. It's allowing hateful, anti-Semitic speech.

I recently reported a post (which is 'being looked at', it's still up basically) saying the below:
but why should anyone have the right to a homeland when it means obliterating another people out of existence?

When I put the phrase into Chatgpt asking what it would mean in the context of Israel it came up with the below:
“when it means obliterating another people out of existence”
This argues that if securing that homeland requires:

killing large numbers of people,

forcibly removing them from their land,

destroying their culture, identity, or ability to continue as a people,

It's obvious, even to AI, that this is hateful speech.

Apparently comparing people to Nazis in a historical context is also ok. It's offensive, inflammatory and no 'Mum' would accept it!

Are you trying to claim that Israel hasn't done that over the past 70 years?

Read the context of the sentence. Having the state of Israel doesn't require obliterating anything.

Both sides have done terrible, terrible things.

Errmm.. what do you think has been happening to the Palestinian people? What do you think is the situation right now in Gaza? What do you think happens to Palestinians in the West bank on a daily baisis - supported by the Israeli Government by the way!

It's not (and never has been), anti semetic to crticise the Israeli government, how many bloody times does this have to be pointed out?? I criticise our own Government, got a special name for me? I criticise Putin oh and Trump - crikey lock me up! Although actually both of them (and probably Netanyahu) actually would! Stop trying to stir it up!

It's antisemitic not anti semetic, how many more times does this have to be pointed out?

The topic of this thread isn't asking for opinions on the I/P conflict- there's a whole board dedicated to that. It's addressing MNHQ's woeful inadequacy at moderating and stemming hateful antisemitic speech on Mumsnet.

Hello @Fcatsspoon we understand why posts on this issue can be upsetting, especially in light of yesterday’s events, and we take reports of antisemitism very seriously.

When reviewing reported posts, we take several factors into account, including the context and a user’s posting history. We can see you reported two posts, and one was deleted. The other we considered political criticism, which we allow. We remove content that targets Jews collectively, or justifies violence, and we’ll continue to monitor the threads closely.

Could I respectfully ask (and apologies for derailing) what is the difference? This is the first time I have seen this pointed out. I don't mean to be rude.

Edit: I have looked it up - I'm not sure I agree with the "suggestion that an inverse exists" - there are plenty of words that don't have an opposite in this way. I can only think of antinomy at the moment..

What does it mean to be ‘anti-‘ anything? Usually, it seems to signify opposition to something definable, be it physical, conceptual or both. Ordinarily, it is quite self-explanatory. Whether somebody is anti-racism, anti-vaccination or anti-wallpaper, we immediately grasp these ideas because we can conceive of what racism, vaccination and wallpaper are. It also suggests that an inverse exists: someone can be pro-racism (as abhorrent as that is), pro-vaccination or pro-wallpaper.
The term ‘anti-Semitism’, when hyphenated, implies that there is such a thing as ‘Semitism’ around which various viewpoints can pivot. It implies that ‘pro-Semitism’ also holds meaning as a position that can be held. It implies that ‘Semitism’ alone encompasses any number of facets of Jewish life and identity. This is simply not the case.
Antisemitism is a self-contained worldview, where Jews are seen through a prism of stereotypes, conspiracy theories and outright hatred. It is a standalone belief system that neither shifts nor responds in relation to actual Jewish people or behaviour. It is a prejudice that thrives independent of its target.

‘Anti-Semitism’, in this hyphenated form, was coined in the nineteenth century by anti-Jewish propagandist, Wilhelm Marr. He manipulated the word ‘Semitic’, which refers to a group of languages (including Hebrew and Arabic) that emanate from the Middle East, to lend a scientific sheen to his racial hostility towards Jews.
The hyphen legitimises the idea that there is scientific basis for Jew-hate – that there is a Jewish ‘Semitism’ to take a stance against – and risks confusing discrimination against Jews with bigotry towards those who speak a Semitic language. That is why we spell antisemitism without the hyphen, and that is why we ask you to do so as well.

@ChloeMorningstar I think the PP is referring to the spelling, not spacing
