Anyone know of a user friendly site similar to Mumsnet?

Finding Mumsnet hard work, too much like Facebook where it's more adverts than content.
Huge adverts covering the screen.
The migraine triggering moving ads at the top.
Changed the colours, too bright.
Some threads auto scrolling.
Going back to the top of the list.
Watch button removed from the top.
Ann Summer's arse has returned.
The only good change is moving the report button because I was constantly pressing it by mistake.

I’m sorry I completely missed this comment.

I’ll have a think and come back tomorrow.

Female friendly…..
What else? Hobbies, topics of interest…?

That’s kind of you. I’m interested in what’s on the telly, news & politics and relationships.

But I think what MN offers, that Reddit doesn’t, is nuance about Women’s Rights and an unashamedly low tolerance to nonsense.

Hm. Never heard of it. Odd site - they seem to tell you nothing about themselves. I see it says they're the "Guardian Talk community." Is that a reference to the news outlet?

It was the lifeboat site when The Guardian closed down its talkboards (one of the biggest and most active UK ones of its time).

I started off there in the early 2000 and was quite shocked when I began to make the move to MN later!

Why is it that so many "social" sites seem to be American-based?

@Whenthetimeisright I sometimes go on Reddit but I don't like it and find it quite complicated.

@GeckoClimber I’d go to Reddit but it’s a misogynistic mess. The only temptation is that it actually works!

Happy to help you use Reddit, or suggest subs?

Any misogynistic ideas are very, very, very sub specific.

I like Reddit. I’ve never seen any misogyny on there. Lots of the U.K. boards really make me laugh.

Because we (British) don't seem to want to open any ourselves. We'd just rather complain and complain, then do nothing or join the US sites. Twas ever thus.

It's pretty rude using the MN platform to discuss how to move to other forums.

MN isn't perfect but if you think their data privacy is checkered, be careful what you wish for on US hosted fora, they wouldn't give a shit if the site got hacked and everyone's data got stolen and sold on. It'd be meh, and?

I quite agree tbh. I know mnhq used to remove some threads and posts like these but they're probably tired of walling off these discussions. Lol I know many forums don't allow them either.

Frankblackwife · 06/10/2025 04:05

Just get an ad blocker, Firefox plus ublock origin

Frankblackwife · 06/10/2025 04:09

Even when did see ads they all seemed to think I was a middle aged man who couldn't get it up wtf

SnowFrogJelly · 06/10/2025 20:51

The app is fine

FedUpWithDilemmas · 06/10/2025 22:28

@NoCommentingFromNowOn can I ask how you read updates on busy reddit threads? It’s the only thing I find difficult. I read a thread, great, then go back 24 hours and just want to read the new posts (without trawling through everything I’ve already read). Is that possible?

Thank you!

CrystalSingerFan · 06/10/2025 23:11

I use a laptop, Firefox browser, ad-blocker. It's all fine. Works for Mumsnet and Youtube.

YouTube on my Android smartphone (where, apparently, adblockers are forbidden) is hopeless.

Honestly I do think more people would like Reddit if it was easier to find communities (subreddits) they felt comfortable in. It is a really different experience hanging out in r/AskUK, where I spend most of my time, compared to r/AskReddit which is a bit of a cesspool.

The main thing to get used to is that each subreddit has its own set of rules and different moderation teams, but I think it's much better to have actual moderation which doesn't exist here. On the other hand you may find your posts/comments deleted and you can be banned which could be frustrating but I would rather arseholes were actually banned and deleted rather than this 'challenge on the thread' and 'not in the spirit' grey area stuff MN does.

I also like r/CasualUK and r/popculturechat (the latter is way more women heavy than general UK subs - its more American but I think the moderation is good). Also lots of good subreddits for hobbies like r/CrossStitch.

You have to curate it yourself and unsub from the default US subreddits that you'll be automatically signed up for, but when you do I think it's a great place.

Yes! I mean, it would be better if one could find the right sub-reddit at all! I haven't run into the comfort problem. But the forums are chaos because it seems that users can create them randomly. Why, for instance, should there be separate forums for Vintage Computers versus Vintage Computing?

And, yes, the greatest virtue of MN, to me, is the excellent mods here.

Hm. Are you saying that Americans are more motivated to create something new?

AutumnedCrow · 07/10/2025 00:56

I’m reading this ad-free, yay, via a browser called DuckDuckGo. Recommended by a poster on this board.

CherryogDog · 07/10/2025 09:49

Yes it was rude of me to start this thread, but as MNHQ are ignoring the many posters struggling to use the site I thought it might get their attention.

I've been on mumsnet all of 10 minutes this morning and need to stop because the flickering ads have triggered my vertigo.
Bit of an own goal for a site funded mainly by advertisers.

I don’t like seeming to be rude, either. But I’m done with being asked over and over again for my ‘device and browser’ and for ‘screenshots’. Can’t be arsed with the faux innocence of it any more.

MNHQ has had reams of feedback, repeatedly. It knows the issues, and why they are issues. I think users have been very loyal and patient over the years, even through hacking and data dramas.

But, like you say, we’re now in unusable territory for many.

skyeisthelimit · 12/10/2025 13:52

can anyone recommend a good ad blocker, because I can't carry on using the site with 3-4 different moving ads in the background.

columnatedruinsdomino · 12/10/2025 14:02

I use the app on iPhone and iPad and I don’t get any of the problems posters are talking about. I scroll past any ads, there’s no flickering and loading all the posts on a thread is instant. The actual website sounds very cumbersome.

yonem · 12/10/2025 14:06

I use DuckDuckGo browser on my phone and have never seen an ad on MN.

Reddit is no longer usable IMO because most of the posts are bots/AI content.

I agree. I cannot think of any other user created content site I visit where the ad framework is the cause of so many basic usability and accessibility issues and inappropriate (for the site) content issues.

Each time there is a change it breaks aspects of accessibility, each time these accessibility issues are reported its dismissed with “we tested it” or “we are compliant” (aka the free code checker didn’t pick anything up).

So the ads come not from MN, but from the browser?

Why would it have been rude otherwise start this thread?

Puzzled.

I'm puzzled by what you've written @MsAmerica .
Someone upthread said it was rude of me to post this.
I agreed, and gave an explanation of why I'd posted.

Mumsnet has been hacked in the past because its system design and security practices were "my first IT project" levels of amateurism. I believe the response from MNHQ was little more than "Oops. You'll probably want to reset your passwords".
