We’re on Facebook?!??

I’ve just found Mumsnet on Facebook, showing threads that have been started on here, some of them personal and detailed and potentially outing. Bit of a shock because I don’t know anyone in real life on Mumsnet but most my friends and family are avid Facebook users, and I’ve assumed I could post anonymously here.
Does everything go on the Facebook page including 30 Days Only topics which I guess posters think will soon disappear?
Did I agree to this in the T and Cs?

I’m confused
the Mumsnet FB account won’t be revealing your real name and details

and unlikely someone would follow mumsnet on FB but not actually be on mumsnet

Aspanielstolemysanity · 29/07/2025 08:33

This has been the case for ages.
Bizarrely I think threads must get auto posted and they often seem to be the ones that are overly identifiable or ones that are clearly started by a troll.

Mumsnet definitely isn't private or small scale though. Lots more people read Mumsnet than ever post on it

Hello @BigDayForTheWomen we share a selection of Mumsnet threads on Facebook each day because many of our followers enjoy seeing the variety of discussions happening on the boards.

We choose threads that are likely to be of broad interest and generally avoid anything that seems overly personal/sensitive or potentially identifying. We’re always mindful of what we share, but if anyone has concerns about a particular thread, do feel free to get in touch with us directly.

Our terms of use can be found here.

Hi @BeckyAMumsnet , tanks for clarifying. I hadn't realised that content could be reprinted anywhere at all, including Facebook. Now I know!
@Dearlucyloo Yes, the content is anonymous in that it is only linked to a Mumsnet username. I was thinking that some of my own family and friends who wouldn't think of looking at Mumsnet might click on a random link to the Facebook site and find a post by me whose content they would recognise. Now that I know about this, I won't post anything at all personal in future.

What's the point in sharing MN threads on social media, though? I don't understand why this is supposedly needed?

SixteenClovesOfGarlic · 29/07/2025 13:25

Daily Mail etc. often use this site for stories, there's about 9 million users on here I think?

dontcomeatme · 29/07/2025 13:29

I don't have fb at all but I'm not bothered about them posting threads. Surely you know how mumsnet works? If someone types into Google a question even remotely related to a post you've created the link will come up. Literally anyone in the world can read it. Its no more outing on fb than it is on here.

Engagement, so many companies are using Facebook and social media for engagement, if you notice on the Mumsnet posts on Facebook there’s multiple people joining in the conversation, giving advice, telling their experience. I don’t see why it’s an issue because anyone that’s on Facebook could very well be on here, you might not think they are on here but you could be wrong

I'm not complaining - it's my fault for not reading the Terms and Conditions carefully enough or thinking about their implications. I assumed that after a while any threads I started would disappear from 'Active' and new users be unlikely to find them. The people I'm thinking of are definitely not on Mumsnet at the moment. Oh well, you live and learn.

It’s a public forum. All content can be copied and repeated absolutely anywhere!

SixteenClovesOfGarlic · 29/07/2025 14:43

You are anonymous, but people can (and apparently have done to other users) advance search your username and if you've posted personal information like town, kids name, etc. could figure out who you are.

Users email addresses and passwords were also published during a hack a few years ago, including mine 🙃

FloofyBird · 29/07/2025 14:55

Yes I found this out a few weeks back and had no idea previously!

Aspanielstolemysanity · 29/07/2025 15:02

This is why I would always recommend

  • name changing fairly regularly
  • changing key details if you are posting a story that might be "outing"

But if you look at, for instance, the holiday club thread shared on FB today, that contains some fairly specific information. I think there should be a bit more thought given to whether a thread might be "outing" before it is promoted on other sites

Unless people are careful to change key details, quite a large proportion of posts could be identifying. ‘Back in May my friend visited from another country, we haven’t met for 7 years, she has just emailed telling me to lose weight’ … is pretty specific and is the story I saw on Facebook. Oof.

Oh I agree.
And people are naive if they don't share key details
But Mumsnet could use their brains and not promote those risky threads on FB at least

SaintGermain · 29/07/2025 15:54

Utterly ridiculous! As an adult it’s up to you to protect yourself online and make sure there are no identifying details before posting online a public forum!

Sneel · 29/07/2025 16:06

Mumsnet threads get shared everywhere, by mumsnet themselves, random people, other forums, newspapers etc. posting on here is the same as anywhere else on the internet, it’s not private, so common sense as to what you share.

BigDayForTheWomen · 29/07/2025 16:21

@BeckyAMumsnet Fair enough that T and Cs are clear, but what is the point of the 30 days only category if the content can be shared anywhere forever? It could give a misleading impression…

I agree that everyone should use their brains before posting on a public forum..and it surprises me when people don't.

But it still makes me think less of Mumsnet when they choose obviously problematic threads (whether due to outing details or obvious trolling) to promote on Facebook

Smallchangebigstep · 30/07/2025 19:56

There is another thread on here today complaining about a post on the MN Facebook page.
So I just made the mistake of looking at the the MN page - although I ve got a Facebook account I only ever use it to sometimes look at local news.
I 'm totally in disbelief at how awful the experience was. The page bears absolutely no resemblance to the website. It looks completely downmarket and tabloid.
It's really put me off MN. I 'm having difficulty equating the Facebook page with the MN experience on the website.
