Distinguishing between the two "Feminist" forums

You really need to clarify the distinction between the forums. One is called "Chat" and the other has "Chat" in the subhead. I have no idea what the difference is supposed to be, and I suspect I'm not the only one.

One is

Feminism: chat

and the other is

Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions

It seems pretty clear to me?

Greyskybluesky · 01/05/2025 12:57

The thread titles indicate the subject of the "chat".

Well, "chat" is also listed in the other one.

And why wouldn't Sex and Gender threads be considered chat?

For that matter, what's the distinction between "discussion" and "chat"? Must "discussion" use big words and avoid humor?

As explained above.
UK forum
Chat.. Cup of tea and a biscuit.
Discussion.. put the kettle on .. Get more biscuits.

Scissor · 13/05/2025 02:36

Though for discussion purposes I'm definitely hankering after a Rich Tea, haven't had a good dunk in a long while.

BeckyAMumsnet · 13/05/2025 13:11

Hello @MsAmerica apologies, but we're not sure what you're asking here. The board titles are distinct and we think that's pretty clear for anyone happening upon them but please do let us know how you think this could be improved.

GurlWithACurl · 13/05/2025 13:14

I can see where the confusion is. Under each of the two forums headings there is a link to the other one. It is not a subheading, OP.

So, like this…

Feminism: chat (heading)

Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions (in blue as a link)

and

Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions (heading)

Feminism: chat (in blue as a link)

Then I must be exceptionally stupid. I recently posted and had no idea where my post belonged. And when I look at the threads in each, I see no clear distinction.

So, please explain it to me as if I were a person who doesn't speak English fluently. What is the intended distinction? Is one for personal stories and one for abstract political discussions? Is "chat" here something different from "discussion"? Is "gender" discussion is allowed to mention men, but "feminism" chat isn't?

My understanding is that anything related to trans goes on the sex and gender board, non trans the chat one

porridgecake · 17/05/2025 05:07

Nothing to do with how you talk about it. It is what you are allowed to talk about.
Several years ago, when gender ideology began to infiltrate all levels of society, it was discussed on the feminism and women's rights board.
A lot of people, who didn't think women should be discussing gender ideology, objected to that and made a huge fuss and insisted that Mumsnet divide the boards so there was one where gender ideology discussion was allowed. It was known as the naughty corner (sex and gender)
The rest is history.
Really easy to understand by reading the boards.

ArabellaScott · 17/05/2025 12:01

OP, I'm not surprised you're confused. There's a whole history that isn't maybe clear on first view.

The boards were split based on an attempt to stop women from discussing and control us. It didn't work, thankfully.

ArabellaScott · 17/05/2025 12:02

Personally I think all feminism relates to 'sex and gender' so I just post on.that board. The 'chat' board isn't used very much.

Reprographical · 17/05/2025 12:04

Sex and gender board = to do with trans rights

Feminism chat = everything else to do with Feminism

The chat / discussion part isn't that important AFAIK

I think 🤔 ^^

Daisyvodka · 17/05/2025 12:05

I thought it was because lots of people complained that the feminist chat was flooded with constant new threads on the trans discussion which a lot of people didnt have interest in or wanted to avoid, so a new one was created - much like during covid when MN created a covid board. And isn't there a Royal board for the same reason?

This.

We were shunted off to the dark and dingy corner of shame for having the audacity to mention women’s rights issues….on a feminist board.

You couldn’t make this shit up.

I believe the Feminist:chat board is basically tumbleweeds these days…

Maybe this is better.

Sex and gender board = to do with the rights needed for female people and where this conflicts with additional privileges demanded by some male people.

It is still a feminist board and framing it as discussing ‘trans rights’ is not really accurate.

For sure. I post about any and all feminist issues on there. Because they all.relate to 'sex and gender'. That is pretty much the definition of Feminism, imo.

Helleofabore · 17/05/2025 12:12

“I believe the Feminist:chat board is basically tumbleweeds these days“

As so many of us said it would be.

But the objectors got their way. They still complain if anything about men intimidating women or children being brainwashed or sterilised escapes from the sex and gender board. The SC ruling should help with that.

That's curious, in that it would make it a very limited forum, and neither uses the word "trans" in the heading.

The main result of your post is that I'm feeling stupider than ever.
Is that the difference between theory and practice? I'm starting to feel I should just give up posting in either one.

Women stopping women from discussing women???

Curiouser and curioser.
