The misogynistic and ageist slur ‘karen’

Cursory · 20/04/2025 20:51

I see this cropping up on here on a reasonably regular basis. It’s an acknowledged ageist and misogynistic term for women over a certain age with an opinion.

Will MNHQ moderate it accordingly if it’s reported, the same way you do for other derogatory terms?

I disagree that it’s for “women over a certain age with an opinion”. The whole Karen meme stemmed from racism eg calling the police on black people based on lies. Age isn’t really the defining factor, it’s more race I’d say. And it’s not about having an opinion, it’s about vexatious conduct.

Edited

Perhaps it began that way but it has become lazy shorthand for putting down older women in particular

Smallmercies · 20/04/2025 21:23

It's no more misogynistic than gammon is racist. Karen is an attitude, not an attribute. I will continue to use it with pride.

Then you’re a misogynist, ageist and a twat.

‘Karen’ is blatantly a misogynistic and ageist slur. It refers a meme which is a middle aged woman objecting to something.

Absolutely agree, it is an avenue ,for shutting females up of a certain age !

Thepossibility · 20/04/2025 22:31

My kids and their friends seem to use it for a white woman of any age older than a teenager who acts rude and entitled. They also say a man is acting like a male Karen if he is acting the same way just because of his (white, arrogant) privilege.
I don't think that's offensive, it's quite fitting usually.

And twat isn't misogynistic??!! Pot, meet kettle! 😅

So it’s white women - surely that makes it racist

No, you can't be racist towards white people. Racism = prejudice + power (or privilege).

Smallmercies · 20/04/2025 22:37

Laughing at all you staunch feminists calling other women twats 😅🫠🤷‍♀️

HouseCaptain · 20/04/2025 23:28

It’s a female name, there are many Karen’s and I feel sorry for them.
There are no men called “Gammon”.

juneisjuly · 20/04/2025 23:30

It’s not misogynistic to call out rude and entitled behaviour just because it’s coming from a woman.
ive also heard many men be referred to as Karen’s or even Kevin’s

Hebfgusa · 20/04/2025 23:30

There isn't a male equivalent. And it's often used for a woman who is assertive but of an age where they are expected to be in a nurturing role, so shouldn't have an opinion. Sometimes, they are being objectionable but what do you call other groups who are behaving like that?

No, you can't be racist towards white people. Racism = prejudice + power (or privilege).

So this sign was not a problem in the UK?

No Irish
No Blacks
No Dogs

And this sign would be fine today ?

No Irish
No Dogs

Racism = prejudice + power.

So Irish fits with their definition. When white was said before it was used more generally rather than white Irish.

Xenophobia is also a word that fits here, I think. And some white people experience prejudice because of classism

I'm not saying it's fine, I'm saying it's not racism. Prejudice and discrimination can still be wrong. "No Irish" is illegal because it's discrimination. "No dogs" is fine depending on the situation.

No, but it does make them look silly.

Boomer isn't ageist - again, it describes an attitude, not an attribute.

Agree. Boomer isn’t remotely ageist. My mum refers to herself as a boomer, because that’s what she is. I think people massively overreact to the ‘Karen’ thing too. I find the uproar a bit naff. Although I accept it must be annoying as fuck if you are called Karen. Having said that, I’m sure many of them aren’t bothered at all

‘Karen’ is blatantly a misogynistic and ageist slur. It refers a meme which is a middle aged woman objecting to something.

It originally refers to someone with a greatly enhanced sense of false entitlement and status.

I believe it originates from Caren Turner - look her up if you're not familiar - who attempted to browbeat two police officers after she was called to a traffic stop of two adults, one of whom was her daughter. She flashed her Port Authority badge at the officers (over whom she had no authority) and tells one of them: “You may not tell me when to take my child. You may shut the f* up and not tell me when I may take my child, and her friends, who are Ph.D. students at MIT and Yale. You may tell me nothing...” - and it descends from there. The video footage went viral and you can probably still find it. She was the epitomy of an overly entitled piece of work seeking to overplay her status.

I don't think it was originally intended as misogyny - she just happened to be a woman.

Legally it’s racism.
The law says discrimination based on colour or race or ethnic or national origins = racism.

SirChenjins · 21/04/2025 09:48

It’s usually used to describe a middle aged woman who is complaining about something - anything - and is rarely used to describe a man. I hate it and refuse to use it. If someone of either sex is being unreasonable there are other words to use that more accurately describe their behaviour.

AnSolas · 21/04/2025 10:01

So
No British
No Irish
No Blacks
No Whites
No Dogs

No Whites not racism just prejudice and discrimination of the person is British and living in China?
But No Blacks is racism if the person is British and iving in China?

Interesting but the origins are not that important. A meme develops with culture and become part of culture. It's now used to bash women, even if that's not where it started

I think you are purposefully missing the point of the original message. 😂you have now moved the location to China, that's not relevant to the discussion

It’s so clearly mysogenistic to use a female name to describe a generic obnoxious behaviour

it’s also bloody unfair to people called Karen - which is only common in one generation
