AI generated content... Should we report it?

What is your stance on AI posts in the talk boards?

Should we report it for deletion?

that's human beings.

but then why should we settle for poor quality theads when we want better ? just because its human ?

Flytrap01 · 02/04/2025 13:25

GiraffeCup · 02/04/2025 13:19

yes, but if you're mindlessly C&Ping Chatgpt on these things, there's no checks or anything to make it more true than someone else.

but by the same token bill the conspaircy theorist who only trusts his own views could also be spouting twaddle etc so in a sense both can be just as bad

kindlyensure · 02/04/2025 15:42

Letting AI start threads on a forum undermines all contributors—bad spellers, conspiracy theorists, trolls.... Because what it is doing is learning language so that it can be more authentic in its responses (in terms of style). But there is no creative thought in its content.

At least trolls and frothers think of a story and then engage with other posters. They may not be genuine, but they are at least autonomous and creative.

Just yesterday, ChatGPT crashed because so many users were trying out the new Studio Ghibli-style image generator. Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki is quoted as saying that AI-generated art is an “insult to life itself.”

Creatives in my industry (writer) are really fed up that our books could be used to 'train' AI style. Of course, all writers have influences and that might show in their content, but they create their own narratives out of their imagination. I don't want my work used to train a ChatGPT model. Also, there's a copyright issue. How are the images/work distributed? Who was the original creator? etc

I know this may seem a bit OTT, but yeah, I think even something like ChatGPT using MN to train its responses is part of this whole conversation about the death of creativity.

Nicelynicelyjohnson · 02/04/2025 16:12

If someone wants an AI response to something, they could just google it or ask AI.
I get invested in threads sometimes, "someone blocked me in with their mini cooper", it's interesting and entertaining but all that goes if it's made up.

Maybe there could be sections where AI is allowed - can anyone recommend a good winter coat, my cat has fleas, etc but a made up scenario - my friend made me sleep on the floor on holiday even though there were two beds in the room - is utterly pointless, bad enough when humans made them up but worse now that OP posts, and then never returns.

Yes, but you'll get 6 other posters telling them what ConspiracyTheoryPoster said was nonsense and here's why.

But AI doesn't make good quality threads.

When you lose the human touch, you lose the warmth the support etc that forums like this can and do provide to struggling mothers who want to be reassured that it's kit only their 3 year old that can't count to ten yet, or their baby isn't rolling over at 2 months or whatever.

Solidarity among sleep deprived mums, a laugh over the fact that DH ate a fat ball ... All that is lost.

If i understand your points correctly nostalgia wrapped in sentimentality, dressed up as an argument. A charming little tale about AI draining the soul from human interaction. But here’s the thing: AI isn’t the problem. Choice is.

You see, communication isn’t a one-size-fits-all affair. Some people want the raw, unfiltered mess of exhaustion and shared delights and misery but all human written then Others want clarity, structure, and well-formed thoughts that have been enhanced by AI And Ai doesn’t stop a mother from venting about her baby’s sleep schedule any more than a spellchecker stops someone from writing in a diary. It’s a tool, not a dictator.

If someone wants warmth and chaos, they’ll get it. If they want precision and coherence, they’ll get that too. The beauty of a forum like this isn’t in rejecting new tools it’s in letting people choose the way they want to engage.

As was previously mentioned maybe the simplest solution is to let the OP decide. A clear note in the thread title or description: AI-assisted responses welcome or Traditional responses only. That way, everyone knows the rules of engagement. Those who want heartfelt, unfiltered solidarity can find it. Those who prefer a sharper, more structured discussion can engage where it fits. No confusion, no complaints just people getting what they came for.

Now surley you cannot argue against that unless you advocate everyone doing the same as you prefer in which case what did you do with democracy ?

Swirlythingy2025 · 02/04/2025 18:54

Redacted, I misread the thread.

EmeraldRoulette · 02/04/2025 20:15

Flytrap01 · 02/04/2025 12:03

chatty threads depend on the quality and peoples knowledge of the subject matter being discussed , depending on the topic how does it help if what people say is their own words but does not have any context or full knowledge or better knowledge on the subject ?

I meant chatty threads as in the wonderful owl thread running atm

not chatty as in "let's discuss Shakespeare and three act plays vs five act plays". Well, that thread would be interesting, but where MN has really changed is the lack of fun chat (IMHO).

Ihavepandassurvivalinstinct · 03/04/2025 12:39

Active is full of the AI or whatever threads today

noblegiraffe · 04/04/2025 21:29

Yes, you can get jobs which pay you to train AI.

Someone is letting them loose on MN instead and getting us to train their AI for free.

Bastards.

so is most of the public as you can use chatgpt for free too,

LasVegass · 06/04/2025 12:01

Thanks for bringing this up. I thought I’d seen quite a number of replies that are long and boring, kind of even handed, which bring nothing really to the discussion. I’d much prefer a heartfelt DFOD reply.

Swirlythingy2025 · 09/04/2025 19:46

Why do some people focus so much on peoples spellings or paragraphs etc if they want original words ?

Motherknowsrest · 09/04/2025 20:30

SwedishEdith · 01/04/2025 22:36

Tbh, this post reads like AI.

It is. (I am not, AI doesn't MN while brushing teeth).

GiraffeCup · 09/04/2025 21:16

I can create a very interesting 500 word article on whatever I like for Mumsnet , complete with relevant quotes

I guess they don't care that their site is being AIed.

They're probably AI their own articles

Yes, but when you use ChatGPT you know what you are signing up for.

Pretending to be a human on a forum is underhand.
