Dear mumsnetters,

We are now able to shed a bit more light as to what actually occurred re the Wig and Robe/Judge Flounce episode. We are pretty sure (having received a confession of as much) that, as some of you suspected, W&R/JF was a non-lawyer masquerading as a QC. Given this knowledge we have deleted the relevant postings and banned the user from the site.

If nothing else the whole business is a salutary reminder that you can never be completely sure that folks are who they say they are and neither should you necessarily completely trust the advice, especially "professional" advice, posted on mumsnet.

As a result of some concerns raised by you we are looking into making parts of the site, the swaps and weight loss clubs for example, something that operates via mumsnet HQ so that people's addresses are not being circulated. If anyone has any other suggestions then please [email protected] or post them here and we promise to consider them.

We?d also remind folks that when organising meet ups you should take the same precautions you would when meeting anyone from the net - make sure you meet in a public place and that others know where you are going.

Having said all that, it would be a shame if this relatively rare occurrence of someone pretending to be someone they are not changed the warm, supportive, welcoming and caring atmosphere on mumsnet - and we're confident that you won't let it!

Thanks for all the supportive and helpful emails we've received from so many of you.

Carrie, Rachel and Justine

IIRC miaow had a children's VTech laptop from JF - not a PC.

FineFigureFio · 13/01/2005 15:08

His full name was on the website

And websites are registered

which was enough info to be able to find out that there is a Jane living with him at the same address

Tinker · 13/01/2005 15:09

But that wasn't necessarily the woman in the photos? Sorry, geetting involved when not bothered really. Just nosey.

doggiewalker · 13/01/2005 15:09

I also now feel stupid for feeling sorry for w&r/jf, who gave me lots of advice (not legal) when I was feeling down about moving to Cardiff. It makes me worry now about moving down there, I feel pretty vulnerable although I don't think I told her/him anything I wouldn't want anyone else to know about.

Potty1 · 13/01/2005 15:10

Have you been searching on the Electoral Roll Fio?? Or do we call you Sherlock?

FineFigureFio · 13/01/2005 15:12

Come on Potty i have had help, i am not clever enough to work this out on my own!

Tinker, i have no idea who the woman is on the photos

Just got to go school pick up but can someone please recap? W&R/JF are same person? Man/woman? Do they live in Cardiff? How did we come to realise? What's this about the photos? Sorry, but just feel I need to be clear in my own head, not just being nosey.

doggiewalker · 13/01/2005 15:15

Thanks Sally. Just gotta go but will pick back up in an hour or so.

Frieda · 13/01/2005 15:17

God, this is all too gripping. I wish I had wingmirrors on my computer so I could see when my boss is lurking around behind me!

ladymuck · 13/01/2005 15:17

Do you think it would be worthwile for mumsnet to email those on WnR/JF threads who may not have be around for these threads? I know most of the regulars couldn't possibly have missed this, but I have to say that RL sometimes drags me away for a couple of weeks at a time. I know the disclaimer is there, but the last week convinced me of how much credilibity this user had.

In terms of taking advice from Mumsnetters, I just wanted to say that whilst I have never taken proper legal advice solely from mumsnet, I have used Mumsnet as my shopping guide many times, and have spent at least a 5 figure sum with the help of this site (admittedly holidays are the main reason for such high expenditure, but buggy, highchair, breadmaker, Boden clothes, granite workstop, tablecloths etc all owe something to this site). I have to confess to rarely having questioned whether the users providing the recommendations really had the products themselves.

In fact does anyone else round here have children ? And if so where are they whilst you're here?

Blu · 13/01/2005 15:20

doggie - yes, same person. I can't quite see how we will ever have any of the answers to any of your other q's because someone, let's call them 'troll' could simply have stolen as much of the profile from the Steve person as they liked from the nowhere site, or his own website. It could be a contact of the real Steve S seeking some sick revenge on them, or it could be a complete stranger who happened on any old victim on the web, or it could be the real Steve s, or indeed his wife, behaving badly and trolling.
Couldn't it?

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 13/01/2005 15:21

I think I'm probably too trusting tbh, it didn't occur to me that W&R might be a fake until the PR thread when I knew 100% 'she' was wrong. Called me stupid too without any provocation, think whoever it was was losing it a bit at that point!

My dh had said to me a while ago that he could tell that there posters on this site who were masquerading as females - but he wouldn't name names

When I asked him how he knew, he said it was like the reverse of the Mel Gibson film "What Womend Want" - that men just think differently and he could recognise that way of thinking.

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 13/01/2005 15:37

Prettybird, you can't let him get away with that! Tell us!

Kayleigh · 13/01/2005 15:40

it may just be womans intuition, but I have my suspicions about Daddycool. I think he's a man
