Announcement re deletion of Wig and Robe/Judge Flounce threads

Dear mumsnetters,

We are now able to shed a bit more light as to what actually occurred re the Wig and Robe/Judge Flounce episode. We are pretty sure (having received a confession of as much) that, as some of you suspected, W&R/JF was a non-lawyer masquerading as a QC. Given this knowledge we have deleted the relevant postings and banned the user from the site.

If nothing else the whole business is a salutary reminder that you can never be completely sure that folks are who they say they are and neither should you necessarily completely trust the advice, especially "professional" advice, posted on mumsnet.

As a result of some concerns raised by you we are looking into making parts of the site, the swaps and weight loss clubs for example, something that operates via mumsnet HQ so that people's addresses are not being circulated. If anyone has any other suggestions then please [email protected] or post them here and we promise to consider them.

We?d also remind folks that when organising meet ups you should take the same precautions you would when meeting anyone from the net - make sure you meet in a public place and that others know where you are going.

Having said all that, it would be a shame if this relatively rare occurrence of someone pretending to be someone they are not changed the warm, supportive, welcoming and caring atmosphere on mumsnet - and we're confident that you won't let it!

Thanks for all the supportive and helpful emails we've received from so many of you.

Carrie, Rachel and Justine

lol

It made me SO cross that she was giving this wrong advice to people who really were desperate, and of course, because 'she' was a QC in people's minds, it was impossible to correct her. Of course, anyone who didn't know anything about PR couldn't possibly be a QC as she described herself... I didn't raise the alarm with MN though, but other people (mostly real lawyers I think!) did.

Potty1 · 13/01/2005 14:04

I feel sorry for her - its sad that she/he felt the need to be someone else.

I do hope that she didn't make up the things about Ross - not that I would wish that on anyone - but it an insult to parents who really have suffered that loss if she did.

tentunturq · 13/01/2005 14:05

Also want to say good on the MNers who stuck their heads above the parapet and took a LOT of stick for it.
I did notice she tended to bump the bereavement thread up whenever she got any disagreement on legal threads - draw your own conclusion.
I still think she was a woman, desperate for popularity, doing a very am-dram QC.
And I'm far too busy today to be on mn dammit! Still glued to this story.
I said it on the 'office girl' thread and say it again - good on pph etc for sticking their heads above the parapet.

DillyDally · 13/01/2005 14:05

What is a shame is that will make people doubt others who offer any advice on anything
But agree you have to be careful especially regarding medical / legal / financial advice offered and always check it out independently
I am willing to give him/her/it the benefit of the doubt regarding the loss of a baby..who knows it might have even been a trigger for her actions.

Soft as shite I am.

Agree WWB - was a shame it wasn't dealt with off board when initial concerns of genuine legal eagles were raised.

elliott · 13/01/2005 14:07

bagpuss, one of the first 'moneyshot' postings was immediately rumbled (by twiglett I think) as a troll. but there are too many postings for many people to make the connection - certainly I had no idea the W&R was previously someone else.

lowcalCOD · 13/01/2005 14:07
