Dear mumsnetters,

We are now able to shed a bit more light as to what actually occurred re the Wig and Robe/Judge Flounce episode. We are pretty sure (having received a confession of as much) that, as some of you suspected, W&R/JF was a non-lawyer masquerading as a QC. Given this knowledge we have deleted the relevant postings and banned the user from the site.

If nothing else the whole business is a salutary reminder that you can never be completely sure that folks are who they say they are and neither should you necessarily completely trust the advice, especially "professional" advice, posted on mumsnet.

As a result of some concerns raised by you we are looking into making parts of the site, the swaps and weight loss clubs for example, something that operates via mumsnet HQ so that people's addresses are not being circulated. If anyone has any other suggestions then please [email protected] or post them here and we promise to consider them.

We?d also remind folks that when organising meet ups you should take the same precautions you would when meeting anyone from the net - make sure you meet in a public place and that others know where you are going.

Having said all that, it would be a shame if this relatively rare occurrence of someone pretending to be someone they are not changed the warm, supportive, welcoming and caring atmosphere on mumsnet - and we're confident that you won't let it!

Thanks for all the supportive and helpful emails we've received from so many of you.

Carrie, Rachel and Justine

pixiefish · 13/01/2005 16:12

SD they were not well-written, they were mawkish claptrap, I'm sorry but they made me squirm - I stopped responding to anything of JF's after they started.

I do not believe a truly bereaved mother would write like that. Or refer to a dead 2-yr-old as "my late son". (Apologies in advance if that upsets anybody who does.)

I bet a bloke did write them!

fairyfly · 13/01/2005 16:14

Personally i am very pleased i am cynical and took everything she said with a pinch of salt. I was advised about criminal compo which was a pretty sensitive issue, i even recieved court forms in which to fill in all my details. I deleted the email as it didn't sit easy.

JanH · 13/01/2005 16:14

Oh sorry, said SD, meant soupdragon not spacedonley!

elliott · 13/01/2005 16:15

I'm sorry, but I think that is exactly the sort of thing an attention-seeking t*** would make up. what better way to garner attention and sympathy? I know it seems awful, and especially if you have suffered similarly, but I don't think this person was terribly concerned about anyone's feelings (other than from the voyeuristic viewpoint of stirring them up and watching what happened).
But I may be wrong. Thanks Blu for reminding me of the many possibilities I hadn't considered - just when I thought I knew what was going on. Its all rather unsettling isn't it?
(for the record, I am far too unimaginative ever to write anything that other than the truth!)

wild · 13/01/2005 16:15

my fav Wiggisms
'the worm turned and it had teeth'
'putrid'
'it's just crawled in and is trying to make itself a sandwich' on 2 sep threads! the 'dh' was out on the town while Wiggy drank his fav malt
the advice to scrape DNA off someone's top when friend's dh had groped

JanH · 13/01/2005 16:15

didn't mean spacedonkey either!

pixiefish · 13/01/2005 16:16

whatever the style of the bereavement threads I could not help feeling so sad about the content

aloha · 13/01/2005 16:18

Am I the only person who didn't ever read the 'bereavement' thread because I saw there was a thread with a Cilla Black song as the heading, and thought, 'Urk, that sounds tacky'? Whole thing is bizarre. Steve Schindler on the Knowhere site talks about living with a 'wonderful woman called Jane'.

Never looked at them properly, i wasn't going to do it in the first place, i think youd have to be insane to forward all your details to someone. Wish i'd kept it now we could have a good look.

wild · 13/01/2005 16:19

not as well up on CIlla as you aloha

vileandputridCOD · 13/01/2005 16:20

I loves oome of her utterances though

DillyDally · 13/01/2005 16:20

Am I the only person who thinks you would make fantastic sleuthers and vows never to attend a murder mystery weekend with you for fear of being far too slow against you Mumsnet irregulars?

Bunglie · 13/01/2005 16:20

Hi Beety, she has had a carot but is giving up bananas! So the 'Donkey' is staying

spacedonkey · 13/01/2005 16:20

I did like his use of the word "infernal"

change change

JanH · 13/01/2005 16:21

But wild, it sounded made up - that's what I mean - she first referred to her son having died in another thread, and I did believe it then because it was sad but straightforward. Maybe it is true, maybe Jane did write that one, maybe Steve wrote the manipulative one - but if it was true, would she really have allowed it to be used in that way?
