Who are the moderators?

In my mind it’s a team of original Mumsnet followers doing it for the love , but is it actually a paid job?
Like are positions advertised on Indeed and anyone can apply or is it a volunteer thing.
I love spotting spam posts and reporting (sad I know) and it made me wonder.

@Victoriawould24 if you're interested in a job at Mumsnet, they list their vacancies here: https://apply.workable.com/mumsnet/

The stuff you're talking about gets done for free by the members so I can't imagine they would pay for that though.

Modding Mumsnet would be a tough job, I should think.

it's a lot more than spam (which tend to be reported by users of MN so the mods don't need to spot the, we do all the hard work!). I'm only saying this because if you want to be successful at interview I wouldn't use that as an example of why you should be given the job.

the moderator's role needs the person to be able to judge whether a poster has broken MN Talk Guidelines and as you've probably picked up from here, it can be nuanced, and sometimes a judgement call that can be controversial and quite borderline.

I think there's a place for AI moderators that can compare a post - in context of the overall thread, and a members recent posting history - against clear guidelines. If those guidelines aren't clear then that would force them to be better defined.

This would remove any accusations of or actual instances of bias. Reports would always be moderated "to the guidelines" that way.

EmpressaurusKittyBella · 31/01/2025 06:05

The AI moderators would have to be calibrated very carefully to make sure they weren’t biased in any way, though.

Thanks for responses, I wasn’t looking for a job was just curious.

If you really fancy moderating there are agencies that hire people to do that for organisations that recognise it should actually be paid for.

CharityShopChic · 03/02/2025 08:24

A long time ago I was a moderator on another parenting site, we were paid but it was very little, like £20 a month in "expenses". There was about 20 of us, we each had our own forums to look after but could jump into any other forum where there was a problem.

Very little of what we had to block/delete was spam, it was stupid things like people posting their RL phone number or address, or libellous comments about celebs, or just your basic "you're a fucking idiot, no YOU'RE a fucking idiot" bickering. We also tried to comment on threads which had no response on them so the poster wasn't totally ignored. It was OK for a while but some posters get very upset when you remove their posts, not so much the people who have specifically joined to cause trouble but the long-term users who just lose the plot temporarily.

Can you let me know which agencies are those please? Thank you very much.

The moderators are just over there, on the left, the far left…😎
