Get rid of the Laugh reaction

LetsNCagain · 21/12/2024 07:46

We don't need the Laugh reaction.
I've now only had it had used mockingly.

Specifically for example, in a thread where the op is upset about something and I gave a supportive message. Some loser gave me the Laugh emoji because they think op is being ridiculous and by extension, so am I for showing sympathy.

Mumsnet, please just get rid of it. If someone says a funny joke, the clap hands or thumbs up is perfectly adequate. The Laugh emoji is the only one that can be used in a mocking way

Edit to add Please!

To be fair it’s the weekend, and they have fewer staff online. It took 18 hours for the thread to be deleted, and it should have been gone by this morning.

What thread are you talking about my thread it absolutely shouldn't of been taking down the name calling the dm threats and constant laughing emojis should of been dealt with. If you had a problem with my thread why have you followed me on to here to carry it on. Just leave me alone its weird

PiggyPigalle · 18/01/2025 22:50

I'll never use the ugly laughing one again, in case I get it wrong.

They are registered users. They just don't have a name. Not sure how that happens though.

I don't understand this at all. How can you be registered but not have a unique user name?

Clearly, it's not on if posters are using the laugh to mock other posters and we'd consider this on a par with a personal attack or similar.

I promise you this is definitely happening, and frequently, no "if" about it. I'm glad to hear that it's not something that mumsnet wants to encourage!

Agree. It is no good. I really hope they get rid of the emoji.

Hallo BIWI - we introduced Reactions based on MNer feedback as users wanted more ways to engage with posts. When we researched the idea for 'thanks' originally, one of the biggest concerns was that it would make threads more like a popularity contest, and so we kept the reactions hidden to all but the OP when we rolled out the new ones. Clearly, it's not on if posters are using the laugh to mock other posters and we'd consider this on a par with a personal attack or similar.

@BeckyAMumsnet How would a user go about reporting it as a personal attack? A user is doing it to me at the moment. I am just finding them a bit pathetic and irritating, but it would be good to know.

And if it is regarded as a personal attack, shouldn’t the talk guidelines be updated to make it clear?

SirChenjins · 20/01/2025 21:22

@DangerMouseAndPenfoldx It seems the only way to report someone using these emojis inappropriately is to report your own thread - which is nonsensical imo.

BIWI · 20/01/2025 21:42

How else would you prove that they're doing it though, @SirChenjins? MNHQ see the post and then they can see who has been using the emojis inappropriately.

noblegiraffe · 20/01/2025 22:24

What would MNHQ do? If someone posts a personal attack they delete the post and don't even tell the poster who did it that their post was deleted. But at least they can look back and see that it was deleted.

So they'll delete the emoji? What's stopping someone putting it back? Or not even noticing that it's gone?

BIWI · 20/01/2025 22:32

Ban the poster? Or at least warn them that they are going to be banned?

noblegiraffe · 20/01/2025 22:34

You don't get banned or even warned about being banned for a written personal attack.

IdylicDay · 21/01/2025 07:39

SirChenjins · 20/01/2025 21:22

@DangerMouseAndPenfoldx It seems the only way to report someone using these emojis inappropriately is to report your own thread - which is nonsensical imo.

And there is then the possibility that they will remove your own post. And any of your own posts you report with the 'laugh' on it. That, will then count to your deleted posts count -> leading to a possible suspension because of your own posts being deleted.

SirChenjins · 21/01/2025 09:07

noblegiraffe · 20/01/2025 22:34

I found this out to my cost when a poster wrote offensive post after offensive post after offensive post about my son - they were all reported and MN deleted them, but when I emailed MN to ask if the poster could be told to stop posting in this vein I was told no, they don’t warn posters, they only delete posts if they deem them to break talk guidelines. A laughing emoji doesn’t break talk guidelines so given they don’t warn posters about inappropriate posts it will be interesting to see how they manage this.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/01/2025 09:17

Surely they could remove inappropriate emojis without deleting the post.
I don't think there's an automatic number of deletions then suspension anyway, as already posts may be deleted if they quote a deleted post when arguing against it.

Efillufwa · 21/01/2025 16:52

I’ve just had my first sarcastic laughing at me on a post under a different username on a thread.
The emoji is being used inappropriately as a vehicle for women to tear other women down, almost like bullying.
This is a website that supposedly is meant to be women supporting each other, so I 100% agree that particular emoji needs to be removed. The other emojis are fine.

DrunkTinkerbell81 · 21/01/2025 18:16

I can't even see reactions? Is that because I'm on the app version?

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2025 18:19

I've just put a laughing emoji on your post, @DrunkTinkerbell81 so you can check if you can see it.

Yes, afaik none of the apps show or allow adding reactions.
I get emails that various people have reacted to posts but it doesn't say which reaction and I certainly CBA to open the browser version to check so a bit pointless.

It's almost worse that the reactions are seen only by the recipient. I understand why it was done this way, but it does make an obviously sarcastic laugh reaction seem much more personal and nasty. I have had a couple of laugh reactions, but I think they were genuine. At least I bloody well hope so ...!

Yes I agree. I nearly outed the person doing it it me by screenshotting and sharing on the thread, but decided it would be too petty given that it was just irritating rather than upsetting me. I can 100% see how it would be very upsetting in other circumstances though.

I almost did the same thing too.
If mumsnet won’t remove it maybe that’s what we should all be doing - maybe they will remove it then, or at least people will stop using it inappropriately.

BIWI · 21/01/2025 23:06

You'll get your own post deleted if you do that - as has already happened on this thread.

JaneJeffer · 22/01/2025 17:23

I've just had one of these on something that wasn't intended as a joke. I had hidden the thread but still get notifications about the flaming thing!

It didn't really bother me because maybe they thought it was funny (or they're just thick) but are we allowed to ask them on the thread itself?

Efillufwa · 22/01/2025 17:28

So we are allowed to be mockingly laughed at, but not call it out? So mumsnet is allowing bullying to happen then.
