Lyclear advert - why promote it when it is virtually useless in the UK due to resistance

Why is mumsnet endorsing Lyclear when it doesn't work?

They're just selling them advertising space.

Search any thread on here and you'll get the 'nitty gritty comb and cheap conditioner' advice.

Nutella advertised on here and I still use peanut butter instead.

DarthVader · 30/04/2008 18:19

But why allow advertising of an expensive product which is proven to work only in rare cases, and wastes people's time and money and perpetuates the spread of headlice?

This is why I think it is not the same as advertising Nutella!

Unless Nutella is advertised as a solution to headlice...

Probably more effective than Lyclear sadly

Hi there, I don't think you can argue that carrying an ad' is the same as endorsing a product. (And if it is we should be charging a lot more!) You don't watch television and think that every ad' you see is endorsed by, say, Channel 4, do you? Anyhow, to quote Justine from another thread:

"The way our advertising works is that we outsource most of it (though there are some folks who approach us directly) to an agency. Our agency handles all advertisers who come via media planners etc. Our agency has a list of banned advertisers/ products. On it are the following:
Nestle, Macdonalds, formula milk products, political parties, pawn, red top newspapers, plastic surgery ads...

... I guess the only way to be purer than pure is to not accept any advertising at all - but sadly we have running costs and we don't think asking folk to pay to use Mumsnet is viable..."

Fwiw, I know parents who use Lyclear and swear by it. That said, the two times DS has had lice I've used a different product. It's up to you whether or not you believe the claims any advert makes; you look at the options and make your choice - but it is your choice.

DarthVader · 30/04/2008 18:52

80% of lice are immune to the toxins in Lyclear

My argument is why allow advertising for products which don't work in the vast majority of cases. Clearly you do turn down advertising revenue from other advertisers & I see no consistent application of logic as to why you accept revenue from this product.

I would be happy to double my subscription if you banned advertising for Lyclear as I think this is a socially irresponsible product which damages public health. In my view we will always be stuck with headlice whilst people stick their heads in the sand.

aww poor Justine getting her "pawn" posted elsewhere

AbbyMumsnet · 30/04/2008 19:01

that'll learn me.

She means PORN.

willow · 30/04/2008 19:02

I dunno, maybe if people stick their heads in the sand it will kill the lice?

AbbyMumsnet · 30/04/2008 19:05

Hi again,

We don't currently charge a subscription at all - although we do charge for the CAT facility. And while it's great to know that you would be happy to pay more, we do feel it important that we are accessible to all.

Best,

Abby

DarthVader · 30/04/2008 19:14

Hello Abby

I think mumsnet HQ are amazing in that you seem to get most things right and do far more good than otherwise - but I don't agree with your decision on this one.

Best,
Darthvader

Fair enough

morningpaper · 30/04/2008 19:16

It isn't up to Mumsnet to investigate claims made in advertising!

Contact the ASA if you think it is misleading or unsubstantiated.

morningpaper · 30/04/2008 19:17

DD2 covered her hair with custard this evening. Will that work?

willow · 30/04/2008 19:28

Maybe if she then sticks it in the sand?

sashadjas · 22/08/2015 23:33

Lyclear say on the tv ad that it is "clinically proven" and "100% effective". These two statements are not mutually exclusive: Omega Pharma, who manufacture the Lyclear products, will have run those clinical trials themselves and (as with nearly all other pharmaceutical companies have been doing since medicines became business) will have only picked the favourable results to use for advertising. It is still completely legal for them to run as many trials as they want and only publish two, and to keep changing the trial parameters. Therefore they haven't actually lied at all, they have engineered and misled. Try reading Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre, it's an eye opener and will make you alot more obsevant.
Oh, and that Full Marks stuff too, it may as well be baked beans for all the good it does! I always use Derbac M, active ingredient Malathion, and ferocious combing. Smile shuffles feet got a bit intense for my first comment! Hmmxx

YakTriangle · 22/08/2015 23:43

Strange thread to bump after such a long time Confused

AndNowItsSeven · 25/08/2015 14:04

Original listerine is the only product that kills lice and eggs. Soak head and cover with a shower cap for two hours.

sashadjas · 25/08/2015 14:58

I don't know about Listerine, that's an interesting one! Certainly the only one I have found to work is, as I said, the two with Malathion as the active ingredient. And I came across this thread while googling Lyclear, I just commented- wasn't an intended "bump". Didn't realise how old it was until after I'd posted but the facts still stand.

DanFmDorking · 25/08/2015 19:39

Apparently, Headlice have become resistant to the usual medical treatments.
The problem has scientists scratching their heads.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 25/08/2015 20:28

Snort at Dan
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A ZOMBIE THREAD ALL

sashadjas · 25/08/2015 21:54

Dan I nearly weed, that's exactly the sort of joke my dad would tell! And what's a zombie thread please?

iamaboveandBeyond · 26/08/2015 15:21

A dead one thats been resurected :)

Check the date (30/04/08), its a little old. I did wonder when i saw a lyclear ad earlier too, though

sashadjas · 28/08/2015 18:07

I did wonder if that's what it meant, I didn't actually see the date until after I'd posted my first comment- I came across this thread whilst looking for Lyclear on Bing. Hey, it's not a bad thing to resurrect a thread whilst the subject is still hot surely? Or is it reheated now, I don't know. I just got done reading about what pharmaceutical companies are STILL getting away with and I'm all fired up with righteous indignation and the desire to tell everyone else too! So I apologise if I sound combative, but not for the intention behind it!????
