Hi MN. Is there a limit to how many times a person can post on a thread when they are not the OP?

If there isn't, is it something you'd consider setting up?

Hi there @JeepJeepJeep thanks for your suggestion - it's not something we've considered to date - is there a particular reason you think this is necessary?

We do have pretty standard anti-spam tools that prevent repeated posting in a defined time frame (for obvious reasons we don't disclose the time frame).

TeenDivided · 22/06/2024 17:33

Why?
Would that not stop for example a useful 3 way discussion on specific topics. Eg advice on getting an ehcp, or how to deal with hmrc.

Hi Becky.

I've seen it a few times, but one particular recent thread is what made me ask.
One poster has responded about 50 times with their opinion.

I think if there was a limit to stop a complete derailment or change of tone on a thread, that would be good.

But people often add multiple posts in a helpful way, not derailing. And people can derail or change the tone with just a few posts. Limiting the number of times someone posts isn’t going to help.

More than 50? When it's not their thread?
Why can't they just start their own thread to give their views. Then people can choose to discuss with them or not.

Edited to add : I'm not referring to posters who comment a few times. That's the point of a discussion.

just report that particular poster on that particular thread - no need to censure anyone else

BrumToTheRescue · 22/06/2024 19:18

This would be a terrible idea on long running threads where several posters post numerous times (yes, more than 50).

Fair point. I agree with you on that.

I am more referring to continuous posting over a short period, which does ruin a thread, I think, and stops other people commenting.

As Becky mentioned a spam filter above, I'm wondering when this would actually be triggered and if the parameters would/could be reduced.

C'mon Becky. What do you think? 😂

@JeepJeepJeep

No it's not a good idea. If a particular poster is causing a problem, report them.

TheShellBeach · 22/06/2024 19:33

If a poster is causing a thread to become derailed you should report them to MNHQ and ask them to deal with it.

BrumToTheRescue · 22/06/2024 19:34

On long running threads, some posters sometimes post continuously over a short period of time because the threads can be like a conversation at times. Stopping that would ruin the thread.

The spam filter putting an account on cooldown happened to me a few months ago when a post posted 3 times.

I think this is a really bad idea . . . I am currently following the Post Office Enquiry thread and there are a few posters who are following it who obviously understand it better than I do and I find their posts really interesting. The thread has been running for ages but I think there's only a few 'regulars' so they therefore have a lot of posts

This thread has really helped me to understand the complexities of the PO enquiry and I really appreciate the posters who have given me so much insight

Please don't limit the number of posts . . .

Yes, I'd have been caught by such a 'rule' by sure on Thursday and Friday - I was kind of doing a running commentary on the Inquiry livestream at one point!

The OP though has a point about repeated derailing. I find MNHQ has a very high tolerance level for derailing and goadiness, and lets a lot of things slide for a long time. Not really helpful on threads that aren't in AIBU.
