Probably ridiculous... but can MN have it's own charity?

Don't know if this has been suggested before, did a little search and couldn't find anything.
Is it possible for MN to have a charity?
It's just the other day I was thinking.. the lovely ladies on MN really helped me with that, I would happily stick £20 in a pot..
and then I sent some books to another MN,...she very kindly said she'd donate some money to oxfam...
Basically if people on MN feel like that regularly couldn't we have a charity?
Is this another of my frankly stupid ideas?

I think I'm right in saying this is something we're working on - but can't quite remember where things are at!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/03/2008 19:46

Do you mean a charity tied to mumsnet?
i.e they would get free advertising and perhaps a percentage of cats etc. If so it is a good idea.

Could you let us know Abby please...

But how do you agree which charities?

My first and foremost choice (and a lot of MNers) would be FSID (darling Maude) and if you guys didn't agree with me, there could be an almighty ruck. This would be something I would dig my heels in over. Just warning you.

McDreamy · 28/03/2008 20:40

It would be difficult to agree on one cause surely?

pedilia · 28/03/2008 20:42

Could it not be a different nominated charity that changes after a certain perod of time?

SlightlyMadSweet · 28/03/2008 20:43

\link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/1374/473154?fm=10055638#10055638\here was Carries' last post on the subject.

May have changed since then but they were suggetsing a nomination process follwed by voting for a shirtlist

fishie · 28/03/2008 20:43

that is what they're thinking pedillia. but oh my the rows it could cause.

i think it would be nice if there could be one large charity and one smaller, categorised by turnover (say under and over £1m) otherwise the same old big ones will inevitably attract all the votes.

ingles2 · 28/03/2008 20:54

and there was me thinking I'd had an original idea for once... shoulda known
Seriously
Surely people wouldn't row over the choice of charity would they? If it's not one you support you just wouldn't donate?!?
Personally I think it'd be nice if it wasn't the big charities, but smaller localised community supporting charities but as I said just my opinion.

obvioudly fsid would be a good choice for most people here.

but i would also more notice of heart charities, particulally the CMA and BHF. but thats for my own personal reasons.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 28/03/2008 21:01

Spooky

I was just coming back to post and suggest the BHF.

For what it's worth... my view is that having some kind of 'pot' as the OP put it, is better. Mumsnetters could then apply for funds from that pot - there could be a committee which decides on giving out of funds, which meets say every 3 months.
Previously we have had situations where a mumsnetter has needed something, and other users have rallied round and got them what they needed - be it an exact match teddy to replace a teddy a child lost, to sending a weeks worth of grocery shopping for a family of 4. (Is there a list of all the things that have happened in the past anywhere?).
Charity starts at home... if 'home' is mumsnet, then it would be raising funds for other mumsnetters who were in need.
