Islamophobia on Mumsnet

namechangedME · 30/03/2024 13:29

It is rampant.

Does @mumsnet notice? Where is the line on what stays up and what comes down?

Understand people are allowed their own opinions - even ill informed ones. But the constant tone of disdain for 'muslim men' as if they're all the same is really prevalent and I don't see any other form of racism tolerated by Mumsnet or it's users. I will start reporting if Mumsnet is unaware of the issue.

People are scared of Islam. What happened to that poor teacher in Batley for example.

Tempnamechng · 31/03/2024 09:14

Racism is wrong, it's always wrong. It's also very important that we should be able to acknowledge for the sake of all women that there might be cultural (not religious, just cultural interpretation) reasons that they are treated badly. A man's culture is not more important that his wife's safety.

Absolutely, and if you're talking about a specific situation then that is absolutely fine.

But not if you are taking about the wives of 'muslim men' as if we are all somehow in danger because of our backwards, misogynistic husbands. Which just isn't the case.

If there are specific posts which make derogatory comments generally about all Muslim men then absolutely report them.

If the posts are critical of religions which are traditionally patriarchal and which place different requirements on the sexes then I think that’s a fair discussion.

@MCOut Definitely not gaslighting. Just a statement of fact- I do not recall any posts about Muslim men of this nature and indeed at all. That is my opinion and experience of Mumsnet. It is not gaslighting to state your opinion/experience. Otherwise there could never be any discussion on any topic where people had different experiences and points of view.

Just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Gaslighting Post 1.

You’re right OP Islamophobia is rampant. There’s a few deleted threads a week but truthfully there’s a massive prejudice and racism problem in general.

Race and religion are 2 very different things and shouldn’t be conflated.

CheshireCats · 31/03/2024 10:18

@Alicewinn But I didn't say it wasn't there. Just that I hadn't seen it. Which is a true statement of my experience:
And indeed I went on to state that Op should report it if she sees it. Thereby indicating I am not disbelieving her.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/03/2024 10:19

I've not seen Islamophobia on here. But there is a huge about of hatred for Christianity.

VolvoFan · 31/03/2024 10:20

I can't say I've seen any, but then I don't live on the internet. Is there really an irrational fear of Islam? I recall a school teacher in Batley is still in hiding after showing a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad to children. Years on. Still can't return to teaching. Given that recieving death threats is a very real consequence of mocking Islam, I see no irrational fear. Mock Christian faith, though, no problem.

budssbuddybud · 31/03/2024 10:24

I agree with @Toddlerteaplease

Where in my comment did I conflate them?

Arconialiving · 31/03/2024 10:33

SirChenjins · 30/03/2024 21:11

Agree @MuggedByReality

Religion has always been a way of controlling the masses, especially women. MN’s reply which includes “As a discussion site where the majority of users are women, we also recognise that it would be wrong for us to not allow discussions surrounding some interpretations of religious teachings and how that impacts women” is spot on.

Absolutely agree & also agree with @Toddlerteaplease re criticism of Christianity.

If the things said about Christianity were said of any other religion, there would be uproar (although I'm grateful that Christianity is tolerant of those who criticise it & that the uproar isn't there - just pointing out the hypocrisy!)

DrJoanAllenby · 31/03/2024 10:47

How ironic! An advert that asks 'Love to share your opinion?' but only if it's one that Mumsnet agrees on. Free speech is not allowed.

DrJoanAllenby · 31/03/2024 10:47

The advert -

💯 there would be carnage

BIWI · 31/03/2024 14:47

What do you want to say that you're not allowed to.@DrJoanAllenby?

I think you're on dangerous ground to say that MN doesn't allow free speech, as I think MNHQ go out of their way to ensure that it is preserved.

budssbuddybud · 31/03/2024 15:19

I think @BIWI you have misinterpreted dr Joan Allenby. My understanding is that Dr J Allenby's opinion is that the OP is seeking to silence free speech not Mumsnet.

MadamVastra · 31/03/2024 15:40

People on here are 'ist' about everything! Shock horror!

FutureFeelsBleak · 31/03/2024 15:45

It didn't take long for the torches and pitchforks to come out on this thread.

VolvoFan · 31/03/2024 15:45

Mumsnet does pretty well with speech considering there are much worse places. That's not to say that there is nothing to improve on, there's always room for improvement. I believe Scotland is about to lose more freedom tomorrow with their new hate speech laws. I hear people are going through their old tweets to stop offence archeologists digging up 'hateful speech' from several years ago. Legal advisers/lawyers have instructed JK Rowling to remove some tweets aswell. She refused, I think. Good on her, I say.

Mumsnet is full of sly digs against Muslims along with racism. The thread I saw this week was a perfect example.

The things against Christianity I have seen are people just challenging views, which is different.

It’s fine to challenge within talk guidelines, but phobic and racist comments should be deleted.

I’ve seen Christians on here make phobic comments about Islam but to be fair they were deleted. In general, mumsnets moderation is hit and miss.

JamSandle · 01/04/2024 01:18

Muslim men are not a race so its not racism. Being a bit pedantic there sorry!

Is that to me? If so, I never said Muslim men are a race. 🧐 Not so much pedantic as lacking in comprehension skills.

On threads about Islam, racism often goes hand in hand. I hope that was simple enough for you to understand.
