Can someone help the S Times with a feature about kids' internet use?
They are preparing an article (based around the survey we badgered you about recently) about bringing up children in the online world and would like to speak to parents with personal experience of the subject. If you are concerned about your children's use of the internet, and/or can recommend measures to keep them safe online, please contact Richard Woods either by email at [email protected] or on 020 7782 5335.

And here's our brand new guide to keeping your kids out of trouble on the net.

Many thanks,

MNHQ

I've just posted on your other UNTITLED thread

saltire · 26/03/2008 15:07

I never used to worry about my 2 on teh internet, as they were only ever on Cbeebies or Nick Jr. until A) MIL showed them how to work Google and
B) DS1 had a friend in and they were supposed to be playing the Harry potter CD rom, I wnet through to find about 8 windows open, and when I looked one was a gay porn site with very graphic pictures, and the rest, well you can imagine. it turns out the friend had told DS1 to put "X (his brother) is Gay" into google and see what happened.

Is what I wrote

txs saltire - I think it's a fairly common story - are you prepared to talk to Richard at the s times?
go on, go on, go on email him...

A Sunday Times article you say?
Oh in that case we can expect some balanced intelligent and thoughtful discussion then can't we?

JustineMumsnet · 26/03/2008 20:04

I think they probably are after someone with a slightly older child than five but definitely worth mailing and asking?

I've got a super 14 yr old ds who has been accessing some fair cop hard core porn. We put in all measures to clamp on his previously liberal net access. He was apologetic remorseful and embarrassed.
but first thing he did?
tested parental controls with attempted access to same sites, abused mobile phone web access and also used my iPod touch wireless for access. Of course he was found out again and now has NO pc access while I ponder his future.
Am a bit stuck at where to go for advice really.

Grouchyoscar · 26/03/2008 21:44

DS uses that there T'internet whenever he can wear us down. He can get on Lego.com with no parental assistance (not bad for 4.5 tbh)

And Cbeebies and Cartoon Network.

It has improved his fine motor skills, deductive reasoning, concentration span and perserverance. Useful life skills in many ways

I keep him safe assured in the knowledge that he can't spell (yet) and can't access Maturenorks.com or Barely legal teen girl on girl donkey sex yet

saltire · 26/03/2008 21:47

grouchy. We thought that about the DSes, who although they could spell had no idea how Google worked. Until MIL told them

Doobydoo · 26/03/2008 22:33

Hi.
I sent an email.Ds1 is nearly 9 and is home edded.and uses the comp and the internet.

My only just 4 year old is able to google Thomas and keeps asking to go on u Thomas (UTube) I couldn't beleive it when I found he had gone from ther official Thomas the Tank website to various u-tube videos people have uploaded.

I want him to be computer literate and we thought it was novel when we found he could type simple words like his name and Thomas into the computer but it is quite scary

cutekids · 26/03/2008 23:13

my kids were on my dd1's laptop this morning.couldn't believe it when she came over with a load of pictures of ladys'"bits"everywhere.thing is...kids are naturally curious.the parent lock thing was supposedly on so I think we just have to remain vigilant and just keep checking on them. we can't hide them away from everything but on the other hand you have to be careful about who could be contacting them. it's a scary old world.

We have a PC upstairs in our spare room and the other morning when I got up, my dd who is 4 had turned on the pc, managed to load up the internet and not only had she got nick jnr and cbeebies on but she had somehow managed to log in to my BIL's Amazon account

Luckily she hadnt purchased anything but I was absolutely gobsmacked.

Needless to say when we go to bed, the internet gets unplugged.

solo · 27/03/2008 12:01

piffle, my god son did much the same at an even younger age. He had a total ban, but went to the library and got it all up there instead...then his mum got a phone call demanding she come into the library! he was banned from the library too!

My nephew got porn up online at secondary school at about 12 years old. They are really curious at these ages and I doubt everything we do will stop them from finding a way entirely. I'm dreading it!!!

liahgen · 27/03/2008 14:51

I have spoken To Richard. I have a 13 yr old dd who was bullied through Bebo.

We are really strict about her internet use since we found out. I haven't read Tanya Byron's guidlines befor enow, but agree that it's the parents that don't give a monkey's that you can't police.

Anyway, he's organising a pic of me and dd!! Agghhh I need my hair doing..
