Why do my MN emails go into Junk?

polkadotdalmation · 13/08/2023 18:36

Not all. Some come up in my inbox and some go to Junk. I've not done anything in my settings, so just wonder why this is and if it's a common problem?

Anyone else have this issue?

I don't think MN can decide how your emails are classified in your inbox, tbh. Really?

I get that but some go into my inbox, and others go into junk, when I’ve not made any specifications regarding their emails. Just wondering if when they originate from a certain office, they go the junk?

I have this with other websites. It's not a MN problem.

They would control how their email servers are set up and the "send" headers can result in mail be classified as junk by filtering systems if they seem odd in some way (such as failing a reverse look up).

OP: is it consistently certain types of mail which go to junk? eg comment notifications only, mails from mods only, PMs only etc?

There are many reasons why an email can flag as junk.
It could be the source address (most email systems allow you to mark an address as friendly),
it could be the to list (that there are many addresses - which isn’t common for subscription emails to avoid GDPR breaches, or that the to list doesn’t name you (you’re a copy or blind copy addressee)
or it could be the title / content

A way to reduce them going to junk is to tag each one as ‘not junk’ and your email system should begin to learn what you do and don’t want delivered to your in box

@C8H10N4O2 Notifications and direct emails, such as about my account go into my inbox but messages about deleting posts go into Junk. I'm therefore not aware when there's a problem with the posting/account.

But the filtering system is up to us?
I never had any problem, so I'm just assuming.

polkadotdalmation · 13/08/2023 20:08

@tommika Good idea, I'll tick the 'not junk' box on the emails I find there.

It may be up to us - depends on your email provider (if you have one) and what filtering they apply as standard.

You can "train" your filters if you are with one of the big providers (thereby training their filters for free!).

Most filters, whether supplied by the likes of gmail or built into local mail clients, will include checks on the sending system as standard. If the sending system looks odd,r reverse lookups fail or headers are malformed it will score the mails down as possible junk or a risk. (these are the headers you typically only see if you display the mail in original text format).

The headers of the mail will depend on the sending system so if for instance MN sends mails through more than one route they could have one configured correctly and the other not. eg automated mails from forum software may go through a different route from individual mails from mods etc.

Maybe you get too many?

That could be useful info for whoever manages the outbound mail systems at MN. If two different sources are read differently by the big mail providers for you its probably happening for others as well. It can be a simple configuration issue on the sending end.

From your PoV if you are with gmail or similar then marking them not junk should result in changing behaviour of their filters (if only we could then invoice them for the time :-))

polkadotdalmation · 13/08/2023 21:06

Yes. I automatically check junk on a daily basis now. Sort of defeats the object!

Hi there @polkadotdalmation. Looks like you've had lots of useful suggestions. Thank you everyone! Flowers And yes, best thing is to add addresses to your address book and mark them as not junk. That should mean they start finding their way to your inbox.
