I think it has taken on the role of
'hmm, I think your taking the piss/your a troll/what a load of bollocks your talking' type thing

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 16/02/2008 18:11

Sceptical, according to the smileys list but I think some people also use it as a rolling eyes emoticon.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/02/2008 18:12

I think it's a 'sceptical' hmm - not an 'I'm thinking' type hmm. But you should use use it as you see fit. Stick two fingers up at 'em 2shoes.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/02/2008 18:12

It can depend in what context you use it. It can seem sarky or questioning sometimes.

Oh, and why have you been killing birds?

Note the use of the hmm emoticon

TurkeyLurkey · 16/02/2008 18:12

Well it says sceptical which is how I take it generally, as in the poster doesn't quite believe what's being said.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 16/02/2008 18:13

Hello Saggar

pooka · 16/02/2008 18:14

I think tends to be sarky

As in

Well that makes sense

Of course it's a good idea to do x, y, z

Sort of like saying - NOT! at the end of a sentence.

Unfitmother · 16/02/2008 18:15

I use it as in 'I don't think so'.

Can't believe you were told off for it - seems a bit petty.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/02/2008 18:16

Hello MoveIt. You doing OK?

Desiderata · 16/02/2008 18:27

I don't like it at all. Every time I see it's smug little face, I want to punch it.

Desiderata · 16/02/2008 18:28

its smug little face!

Now I like . It's cute.

ScruffyTeddy · 16/02/2008 18:47

When we first got it I think people used it to say "im not sure/I wonder"...now it just seems to mean "you're talking crap".

Cant we have a different "im not sure" emoticon mumsnet?

Does anyone remember that horrid wink we had for a while, looked a bit sinister?

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 16/02/2008 18:49

I see it as saying "chuh! yeah, whatever"

Blandmum · 16/02/2008 18:51

I tend to use it as 'Not really convinced of that'

So, 'Market forces tend to work for the best'

'Just because women have different roles, it doesn't mean that they are not treated equally'

TripleyTigger · 16/02/2008 18:52

Where have you been hiding 2shoes have you been busy

KatyMac · 16/02/2008 18:54

I tend to use in about myself & my understanding or about OFSTED (which is totally understandable?)

theyoungvisiter · 16/02/2008 18:54

I like , I see it as a sort of raised eyebrow, halfway between sceptical and reserving judgement.

I hate and don't really like . I don't know why exactly - somehow seems a bit teenagerish and always looks scary and false.

policywonk · 16/02/2008 19:03

I hate

Want to punch its little face in

I think it's because it gets pressed into service in such a wide variety of ways - everything from 'I found the ending of Titanic really sad' to 'My entire family has been wiped out'. In the latter example it just seems pathetically inadequate.

2shoesisabirdkiller · 16/02/2008 21:17

TripleyTigger yes i have been busy as my says
so can i use for hmm let me think?

I want to punch the too. Mostly when it is used AT me. It's sarcastic and arch and annoying.

ZippiBabes · 16/02/2008 21:36

i .like

i quite often use it to myself

like er

well i am a complete nutter

winestein · 16/02/2008 21:40

I don't like it. I hate the way it is used mock-condescendingly.

You particularly like the "In The News" section then Policy?

2shoesisabirdkiller · 16/02/2008 21:41

i like
is horrid(but I hate green)

OP posts:
policywonk · 16/02/2008 22:12

Winey - yes, exactly! We should have a 'grief tourist' emoticon.
