A nationwide test of the UK’s new phone emergency alert system will take place this Sunday 23rd April at 3pm.
The alert will sound even if your phone is on silent, which could put you at risk if you’re living with domestic abuse and have a hidden phone.
The alert will be a ten second sound and vibration along with a pop up message. The alert will say: "This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there's a life-threatening emergency nearby.
"In a real emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.
"Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information.
"This is a test. You do not need to take any action."
To opt out of the alerts:
For iPhone
Go to Settings, then Notifications - scroll to the bottom and toggle emergency and extreme alerts to off.
For Android
To opt out, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off ‘Severe alerts’ and ‘Emergency alerts’. On some devices, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off ‘Extreme threats’, ‘Severe threats’ and ‘Show amber alerts’.
