MILs should "suck up the bantz"

Have emailed to MNHQ about this, but am disappointed with their reply so want to address it in public.

There is a thread in AIBU with a title "To want to smack my mother in law"

And while i get where the wishy-washy OP is coming from - i don't find this kind of title acceptable. Really, i can't see why a violent thread title against a woman should stand. It is hugely offensive to talk about violence against anyone in this casual way. And when challenged to be told "meh, she doesn't really mean actual literal violence" (me paraphrasing. The OP said it's a "joke" so - hahahaha - we let it stand is what MN reply to me boils down to)

That is rather less than impressive given some of the deletions we put up with in other areas. If i were an MIL I'd be less than impressed with this decision.

Agreed, I think some of the threads on here towards MILs are awful.

anexcellentwoman · 31/12/2022 16:03

For a while there were a number of posters whose standard response to a MIL problem was to suggest tricking the MIL into thinking she had dementia by moving, hiding stuff. I always reported this for breaking talk guidelines. MN mods rarely take these posts down. Imagine posters being advised to trick female friends or colleagues into thinking they have breast cancer?
For a supposedly female site there is a huge amount of misogyny directed at older women.

Yes they are.

EasterIsland · 31/12/2022 16:04

I agree @Brefugee but it's par for the course in terms of MN ageism.

frylite · 31/12/2022 16:05

Agree.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/12/2022 16:06

Agree.

Igmum · 31/12/2022 16:08

Agree. I'm not a MIL either, but don't think this is particularly funny

fallfallfall · 31/12/2022 16:08

its depressing and violence is never acceptable.

Brefugee · 31/12/2022 16:09

I just think if it was "i want to smack my teenage daughter" it would be VERY different

I agree too, it's horrible.

Or if a man wanted to smack his mother in law.

ZoeCM · 31/12/2022 16:12

Agreed. The ageism on MN is appalling sometimes!

PeekAtYou · 31/12/2022 16:13

It's not just MILs- I've seen comments about burying husbands under the patio and putting children out onto the streets many times on here.

CornishGem1975 · 31/12/2022 16:13

What if it was "I want to smack my sister" or "brother"? I've seen people say it about their husbands and that's never been a bother.

Can't get upset about it tbh it's just people ranting and venting.

LittlePearl · 31/12/2022 16:14

We all know that some family relationships can be tricky, I have had a difficult relationship with my own MIL ever since I first met her (40+ years ago).

However, some of the MIL threads on here are deeply depressing. It seems as though some women are determined to find fault for the sake of it.

I can only hope that when it’s their turn their DILs are more sympathetic.

Brefugee · 31/12/2022 16:21

so if you're ok with this thread title, that's fine, we're all different.

You'll be ok when it's you being potentially smacked because you're annoying? I don't know about anyone else, but i do tend to complain about threats of violence on threads like that one.

The husband / patio scenario tends to crop up when they've been leaving the toilet seat up. It's a well known (at least on MN) trope and can be funny.

But this is a woman who is (from OPs POV) being an annoying interfering pest. Not challenging the thread title isn't an option to me.

If it was in the body of the text, followed by "not really, I'd never do that" it's a whole different proposition. But there it is, in the Last Hour or Trending (was it? I can't remember) as a title?

MN's reputation is pretty much in the toilet everywhere else, i'm surprised they don't try to get the easy wins (in this case by changing the thread title)

I have also noticed a lot of negativity towards older women, especially MILs.

It makes me want to point out that the PPwill also be the older woman in the future.
It seems really immature.
Reminds me of the awful attitudes and so called jokes about MIL from my childhood/teenage times.
The awful comedians getting cheap laughs by ridiculing olderwomen.

So grow up girls !😜

Brefugee · 31/12/2022 16:50

the ageism is tedious.
but in this case it is the fact that it's the thread title. I could handle it in the text of the OP
