The advert with the snorkeller holding the starfish

I realise I’m probably the only one that cares about this, but I have a massive objection to adverts that are actively promoting the destruction of marine life. There is an advert for a Caribbean holiday with a picture of someone holidaying a starfish they have picked up so not only is the starfish being harmed, but the holiday company and mumsnet are making money out of it too.

Starfish are very delicate and can easily be injured by human hands touching them, especially when picking them up as in the picture. If they aren’t injured by being touched, then just the normal bacteria that lives on human hands can be fatal for them. Starfish are an important part of our ecosystem and we should be seeking to protect all marine life, not using it to promote profit.

Also, while starfish are usually harmless to humans, not all sea creatures are and on a website that children are likely to see, it seems irresponsible to show pictures of people holding them. To anyone that knows anything about the sea' it’s not a good look anyway.

’Take only memories and leave only bubbles’ is quite a well known mantra for many.

Please Mumsnet, on behalf of the starfish, please can you tell your advertisers that you won’t show adverts that promote harm to marine creatures and get rid of it.

Hi @ClocksGoingBackwards and thanks for flagging this, we'll take a look - in the meantime, do you have a link or the name of the company?

ClocksGoingBackwards · 11/08/2022 10:26

Oh thank you so much for listening!

I’m sorry I don’t, I think it was called Caribbean something. I should have looked properly, but I’ll see if I can find it again, it might come up on a holiday thread!

And whilst we're talking about questionable adverts why is the tanning salon one constantly on, it's not exactly promoting good health. I know everyone can make up their own minds but this always seems off.

Hi @DeathWinsAGolfish - next time you see that advert can you possibly take a screenshot so we can take a closer look? Thanks in advance.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 12/08/2022 22:24

@DawnMumsnet of course.

OP I am with you re the starfish - stuff like this makes me sick.
I love snorkelling but find it so depressing when I see people picking marine life up/feeding fish/promoting all this. ANGRY is not the word.
You are not the only one who cares but I know how you feel as I always feel the same!

ClocksGoingBackwards · 13/08/2022 07:55

@DawnMumsnet After I posted I spend ages going back through threads looking for the advert but couldn’t find it and I haven’t seen it again since. I’m so sorry. Next time I have a problem with an ad I’ll make sure to pay more attention to the name of the company.

Thank you for being willing to address it.

Thanks for looking, @ClocksGoingBackwards - and if you do see it again, please let us know.

I'm in the Caribbean right now and went snorkelling yesterday. There is absolutely no way you would have been allowed to touch anything at all. In fact we got countless warnings about how some coral can 'burn' you. So it's misleading false advertising as well as animal cruelty.

@DawnMumsnet, it's here, for Consol.

@DawnMumsnet, it's here, for Consol.

Thanks! If you can, please do get us a link. You can do this by clicking the advert and copying the URL. Also, if you hit the blue triangle, you can choose not to see adverts like this (it's an ad choices advert).
