Locking a thread

SoupDragon · 15/11/2004 18:27

Is it possible to have the facility for a thread be "locked" so that it can be viewed but not posted on any more? Obviously not so that everyone can lock threads but so that we can request it.

Sometimes threads degenerate from an interesting start into a Them v Us scenario with people getting defensive, aggressive, upset... It's not right to delete the whole thread but being able to request that it be locked against further posts would be good.

A new thread would just be started do you not think?

fio2 · 15/11/2004 18:30

or maybe it would be better if people actually thought about the thread they were posting and how it might be taken the wrong way beforehand

and soupy, I thought you were all for the board modding itself?

fairyfly · 15/11/2004 18:32

Its a bit like hanging the phone up on someone when they haven't finished talking, send people wild, and everyone would have a different opinion on when a thread should be locked

SoupDragon · 15/11/2004 18:35

Oh, whatever.

Carry on bickering round in circles, upsetting and insulting each other then. I don't care.

OP posts:
fio2 · 15/11/2004 18:37

okay then

hurumph!!

fio2 · 15/11/2004 18:39

and sorry for whoever I have insulted, whatever i have wrote/typed has been in jest. i have too much crap going on in my own life to be bothered with upsetting anyone on here...for the record

blossomhill · 15/11/2004 18:41

Me too Fio. I haven't the energy to carry on with this playground cr*p. Shall stick to the sn threads in future.

fairyfly · 15/11/2004 18:41

Ditto fio (apart from your breasts, i meant everything i said about them)

Gobbledigook · 15/11/2004 18:42

Why can't we just have a barney now and then?

I know what you mean though Soupy - even though I was posting on 'that' thread (because someone really did piss me off and I'm not one to sit back and take it) I have to agree it just needs to die but people keep posting and so I just have to retaliate!!!

fio2 · 15/11/2004 18:42

thanks ff, and tbh I think your breasts are lovely too, just bigger than mine for which I will be eternally {envy]

Gobbledigook · 15/11/2004 18:42

Oh, BH, don't!!!! I like you and I don't really go on the SN ones!

Twiglett · 15/11/2004 18:42

IMHO There are too many people already acting as gatekeepers and telling you when and where you are allowed to post .. makes me slightly

Twiglett · 15/11/2004 18:44

not meaning you soupy .. just came up against it recently in a very bald 'you have no right to comment' way on a different thread to the one you're talking about .. made me momentarily apopletic

Tinker · 15/11/2004 19:26

Hmm, who would decide when a thread should be locked though? Personally, except when it's a troll, nothing winds me up more on here than "Can people stop posting on this thread" posts.

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 13:41

Ah thanks goobledigook, I like you too
I may venture off now and again then

enid · 16/11/2004 13:49

Noooo! Those posts are a red rag to a bull. They set off my Mumsnet Tourettes! I'd implode if people could lock threads. It means someone would always get the last word!

MistressMary · 16/11/2004 14:00

They do this on Handbag forums and it doesn't help matters. It just goes quiet or other threads are started only to be flared up again and time and time again it's the same old stuff.
Not capable of debating with respect for others point of view.
Not really any answer to how people use these forums or show some decorum,I fear?

jampot · 16/11/2004 14:01

what thread are we all talking about please?

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 14:05

I have made a promise to myself never to get involved in one of thos threads again.
It is a complete waste of my time and energy.
I though I left all that behind in the school playground. Finished!!!!

KangaMummy · 16/11/2004 14:13

I like, Jampot am really confused

What is happening?

PLease fill both of us in it is very difficult to follow.

If I have posted and upset anyone without realising I am sorry, I hope not

handlemecarefully · 16/11/2004 14:21

Also against locking threads. Think people should just vote with their feet and avoid those threads if they find them irritating / disturbing.

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 14:26

I agree with you hmc. That is not the reason I come on mumsnet for and shall know in future to steer well clear!!!!

fairyfly · 16/11/2004 14:30

I would like the right to personally bar people that don't agree with me please, tia

handlemecarefully · 16/11/2004 14:31

Kangamummy,

I'm sure you haven't offended anyone. There was a thread entitled something like 'why don't young mothers breastfeed' where a couple of posters said some aggressive and incendiary (probably not spelt that right) things which were very upsetting to other posters

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 14:38

Unfortunately I gave them the reaction they wanted. I am not falling for that one again
