Following from a thread of yesterday I downloaded free AdAware software from a link on mumsnet .... and now have located a virus from it!!! ARRGGGHHHH!
Sorry tech don't wish to embarrass you
Thought it best to warn other mns who downloaded this so that they can get rid of it before your PC's pack in

I'm a Mozilla Firefox user and can thoroughly recommend it - particularly tabbed browsing & anti-popup ads. Much quicker than IE too.

JJ · 30/09/2004 13:56

Yes! Just go Mac. Virus free here without problems since, let's see... forever!

enid · 30/09/2004 14:02

Yes but some webpages arent optimised for viewing in Mozilla.

I ran Panda anti virus and it didnt detect anything - I KNOW i still have lots of adware on my pc...so...its not a miracle cure, sorry.

enid · 30/09/2004 14:03

Yes macs are great but you can't get the games for them...that matters in our household unfortunately - also very expensive and awkward to fix when they do go wrong, and believe me, they do!

The only sites I've found impossible to work with Mozilla were a couple of obscure shopping sites. Even Argos (which used to be a big compatibility offender) has cleaned up its act. And it's no big hardship to fire up IE for just one site that isn't compatible - especially if it means that the rest of your browsing time is much more secure and faster too!

nutcracker · 30/09/2004 14:21

Oh god, i hate bloody computers

I've just rung my brother and he waffled on. Basically the last time i had trojan the guy got rid with pest patrol so why hasn't that detected it this time ??

Anyway he is having computer probs of his won at the mo but basically it looks like i'll be sending it off to have it removed again.

Secur - Not sure that will work as we did that when I had it before and it didn't work .

Nutty search in google for the name of the virus you have or the infected file name. This should give you a link(s) to a site which should allow you to download a patch to get rid of the virus.

BTW don't get a mac why not use Lynex - I find it as easy to use as windows and its free and no viruses!

champs · 30/09/2004 21:11

I am still not spyware free. and I'm sure I have a virus... It is getting me so angry. I keep running adaware and spybot, yesturday adaware foud 225 stuff and today 57. how do i get rid for good. how does stuff just download itself to cpu?

rosies · 02/10/2004 12:01

it seems you are all using XP. have you been and got all the critical security updates from the microsoft download site? this goes for 2000 and ME as well. as a point of interest, since the launch of XP there has been 2 Service Packs that really need to be installed. they ar massive, so if you dont have broadband, you can request an SP2 disk from microsoft. this should fill lots of security gaps.

yes, ditch IE as a browser. its full of holes and allows pop ups. i use this and make sure the pop up box is greyed out . its also free and so are the updates.

anti virus software... macafee and norton are no better than free ones. i use this AVG software . again, its free and so are the updates, which you need to do absolutely regularly. make sure you uninstall any other anti virus protection first. you may need to switch off the XP firewall to install.

adaware is good but you should also run spybot, search and destroy . it picks up stuff adaware doesnt. run these every week or so... you'd be amazed at what crap gets in your registry files. most are just data miners. its also a free programme.

oh yeah.... happy surfing!

blossomhill · 02/10/2004 14:04

I have had serious problems with spyware in the past week. Is mumsnet causing it? I only had 1mb of memory left out of 256 as it was all being used up by spyware. A friend of my mums managed to sort it out so hopefully won't happen again!

I've got the the AVG thing that was mentioned by rosies. It runs a check every automatically and I'm virus free.

Infact we had a trojan thing the other week and being completely computer iliterate I had no idea how it got there or how to get rid of it. AVG puts it in a "virus vault" which I suppose keeps it out of the way. When the latest update came through the trojan whatsit dissappeared of it's own accord. Even my IT consultant BIL couldn't explain it but it's all good to me.

I ran the panda one and that also confirmed it wasn't hiding and said no virus's

popsycal · 02/10/2004 15:41

just ran with panda and although i run norton evry second day, panda just came up with 2 trojans.....
but it doesnt delete them does it?
Now what do i do

popsycal · 02/10/2004 15:42

it doesnt give me any other info apart from them being trojans

SoupDragon · 02/10/2004 15:44

It should delete them if you checked all the boxes at the start of the scan. The ones that said "disinfect automatically" etc - the one at the bottom said "neutralise trojans"

SoupDragon · 02/10/2004 15:45

I forgot to do this last time and had to run it again with them checked
