Can we add the date posters joined MN?

So many trolls, cheeky and goady fuckers these days! Advanced Search can be helpful in identifying a first time poster - but given how frequently people name change, or the fact that often people name change for one, specific post, sometimes a long-term poster can seem to be a first time poster. Hence they may come under suspicion too.

Could you add, underneath the info on the right-hand side, where it currently has 'message/report', the month and year that they joined MN?

I realise that being here for a while doesn't preclude trolling (unfortunately), but it's much more likely that someone posting a CF/GF/Troll thread, who only joined this month, is not going to be a genuine poster.

Most other sites seem to have this kind of information. I think it would be really useful.

True. But so many seem to fall for it, don't they?!

Do you mean sending money?

BIWI · 28/12/2019 12:39

Yes! (Or PMs, offering other kind of help etc)

How do you know how many posters send money? Those type of threads always end up with a working from MNHq not to do that. And anyone stupid enough to send money to someone they don’t know won’t be put off by a “newbie” badge.

Relevantreddit · 28/12/2019 12:41

I know purple and I agree but people do and some people have bled the place dry.

PurpleDaisies · 28/12/2019 12:43

How can people have “bled the place dry”? I don’t get it.

I’m not saying that trolls shouldn’t be deleted but it’s posters own personal responsibility not to send money or other stuff to anonymous people on the internet.

JaneJeffer · 28/12/2019 12:44

It also would give a good indication of whether Poster A is Poster B.
It doesn't have to be exact. 100+ 1000+ or whatever.

BIWI · 28/12/2019 12:45

Of course all of this is posters' personal responsibility - but it's evident from various threads here that people seem to fall for even the most obvious trolls. Don't tell me you haven't seen it happen?!

OP posts:
DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 28/12/2019 12:45

I honestly can't see any downside to having : newbie; 6 months; 1yr+; 5yr+...

I can't see many upsides.

There have been several long term trolls and those are the most "dangerous". Not the blindingly obvious ones.

PurpleDaisies · 28/12/2019 12:46

Don't tell me you haven't seen it happen?!

Of course I have. I’m saying that those people will not pay any attention to newbie or first post badges.

JaneJeffer · 28/12/2019 12:46

The current problem is that I think everyone is a troll unless I 'know' them!

VivaLeBeaver · 28/12/2019 12:47

I think it would make me identifiable.

I’ve been here that long I can’t believe that there’s that many people left here who joined in the same year as me....like a handful. The MN super sleuths would sure suss me out if I name changed , which I do do for genuine reasons.

Aragog · 28/12/2019 12:47

I joined in January 2003.
However this name is only about 18 months old I think. My original account and my long time username is, I think, now deleted so I can't actually access it anymore.

Relevantreddit · 28/12/2019 12:47

I do agree with that purple

WorraLiberty · 28/12/2019 12:49

I think most of us have seen it happen but there's nothing anyone can do about that, except the people themselves.

And tbh when most of them are questioned, they tend to reply with "Well I'd rather risk it being a scammer than see a needy person go without".

So as an adult, that's their own choice.

sippingcoffee · 28/12/2019 12:52

Ebay puts various coloured stars besides your user name to indicate number of transactions , something like that may work

bubblesforlife · 28/12/2019 12:56

This may sound like a dumb question but what defines a troll in MN?
I know what the definition of one is, but what does a MN one look like?

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2019 13:00

I think of it as someone who makes up bs - sometimes for money, sometimes for "laughs" because they're bored, sometimes for novel or article research. Mn's problem is gullible posters and needing the clicks.

MoobaaMoobaa · 28/12/2019 13:01

DoesntLeftover I agree.

There is a poster who's been here years but only posts about something specific. I've reported them to MN before and said please look at the content of all their posts.

But they are still here.

exLtEveDallas · 28/12/2019 13:03

There are lots of different MN trolls:

The ones with the hard up story that ask for money and/or stuff (or don’t ask, but know they will get offered)

The emotional trolls that claim bereavement, deception, divorce etc for attention.

The trolls that post racist or anti-men vitriol hoping to get some fodder for screenshots.

The MRAs and TRAs.

The sellers & scammers.

The ‘my life is so much better than yours’ trolls that post simply to upset others.

Pretty much the same as anywhere else on the internet, but here it feels more personal, because it’s a majority female and parenting space so the abuse can be more targeted.

bubblesforlife · 28/12/2019 13:08

Thanks. I guess I only click on posts that peak my interest, which I feel I can relate to, learn from, or contribute toward.
The only trollers I have noticed are those that really give posters a hard time unnecessarily and rip them to shreds. More often than not... they are deleted my MNHQ

MoobaaMoobaa · 28/12/2019 13:09

And troll who are posting for sexual kicks. getting poster to talk about what turns them on. For example as pp mentioned children in a classroom having accidents.

Cohle · 28/12/2019 13:12

I don't think it's particularly pleasant to create a hierarchy based on how long users have been active on MN.

Thinking you "know" or can trust someone just because they've been on MN a long time is foolish. It's individuals own responsibility not to give more than they can afford to lose to strangers on the internet.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2019 13:14

More often than not... they are deleted my MNHQ

I don't think they are. I don't read most threads now as too many opening posts scream "Bullshit". But they stay for ages and get loads of posts. MN loves them.

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 28/12/2019 14:45

I think MN moderation has changed or else they're snowed under but there are lots of obvious trolls who are left to stand for ages. And what I mean by that, is I'll report them, then check back later and they're still there then much, sometimes even days, later, it's eventually deleted with a troll notice.

There's also the relatively new type of trolling where MRAs and TRAs post deliberately goady posts so they can screenshot then put them on Twitter and say 'this is what MN is like'.

Not to mention all the fetish trolls who seem to have descended on MN. I do think MN should have a new standard post about not sharing health/medical/gynae issues unless you're happy for it to be a MRA/TRA getting off on details of periods.
