Links in posts to mumsnet site sections

Noticed a few posts mentioning things like alcohol and reviews and they'd had links added to relevant sections of the mumsnet site. Wondered if this was an automatic thing. I used to see it in the Guardian and it would drive me mad!

Aha! It is being done automatically. I didn't make those words into links.

OP posts:
popehilarious · 12/07/2019 13:41

Anyway, is it really necessary? 99% of the time people will either be annoyed that they've clicked a link that isn't relevant (the 'reviews' was in relation to reviewing CVs, so hardly relevant to go to mumsnet reviews of buggies etc), and if you like to post links in your posts anyway it's also annoying to have them added in for you and take away from the meaning of your post!

What else does it? career advice, sleep, car seats, conception...?

Is this just in browser. There are no links on the app

popehilarious · 12/07/2019 13:44

Browser on laptop and on Android phone, yes. I don't use the app...

OP posts:
MsMarvellous · 12/07/2019 13:44

Just gone into the browser on my phone and the links are there. How bloody annoying!

coconuttelegraph · 12/07/2019 13:50

I've just seen cars, I don't like it

CardinalCopia · 12/07/2019 14:21

Yep, irritating in the extreme that.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/07/2019 14:29

Driving me fucking crackers! Please remove!

Spidey66 · 12/07/2019 14:43

It's nuts. Someone in the doghouse was talking about swimming being a good exercise for dogs and the post ended up being linked to an article on exercise in pregnancy.

MN stop it, its annoying and unnecessary.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/07/2019 14:49

Yep and someone was talking about boots the chemist which links to boots for your feet

Very stupid

Crimebustersofthesea · 12/07/2019 14:52

God yes this is annoying me too!

For some reason the word being blue also makes me read it with an emphasis which changes the meaning of the sentence (that might just be my issue though Grin)

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/07/2019 15:02

It is a bit silly. One just skates eyes o'er the links as fingers decline the invitation to click. though I DID click on the boots one just out of curiosity, yunnerstand, crikey Clarkes are popular!

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 12/07/2019 15:11

Not cool MNHQ....not cool

anothernotherone · 12/07/2019 15:14

Piles of laundry links to medical piles. AI needs to be way more sophisticated before this can be accurate or useful, and even then it will still be annoying...

anothernotherone · 12/07/2019 15:14

Ah apparently capitalised words don't link. Piles of piles .

EllenEyewater · 12/07/2019 15:37

It’s incredibly annoying

Nesssie · 12/07/2019 15:38

Really annoying MN!

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2019 15:39

Pleas turn this off. It’s incredibly inappropriate on sensitive threads.

CharityConundrum · 12/07/2019 15:39

It's intrusive as it can appear as though a poster is endorsing the article linked to, and it's a bit rude to just do it without giving any warning. Are there going to be categories of posts or sections which are excluded? Are we going to read a post in which a poster talks about something sensitive and ends up with links to jaunty articles about baby led weaning?

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/07/2019 15:50

SO what's the list?

Cars, boots, piles, exercise, car seats, is holidays there?

Irritated doesn't cover it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/07/2019 15:50

Reviews.

Bezalelle · 12/07/2019 15:51

Please turn this off, @MNHQ. Really offensive in threads about sensitive topics.

popehilarious · 12/07/2019 15:53

Alcohol and reviews are no longer showing as links, but car seats is!

OP posts:
TinyPaws · 12/07/2019 15:55

This is awful. In the miscarriage section, threads that mention 12 week scans get linked to your article on 12 week scans that just assumes everything will go swimmingly and provides no support or guidance if there's an issue. Likewise, when the word "symptoms" is mentioned, it links to an article on early pregnancy symptoms when people are in fact talking about a miscarriage.

Also piles of laundry links to an article on constipation and piles.

Please turn it off, @MNHQ, it's dreadful. In the meantime, can we report our own posts to get these links removed?

TinyPaws · 12/07/2019 15:58

Oh lordy, and people discussion trying to conceive in the infertility section are having links inserted to an article entitled "Trying to conceive: 10 things to do before getting pregnant" Hmm
