Managing your cookie preferences

JanineMumsnet · 27/09/2018 13:47

Hi all

A quick heads up that, starting today, we're trialling some tech that will enable users to manage their cookie preferences.
This approach is considered best practice: giving people more control, and aligning with GDPR and the recently updated Data Protection Act.
And we have tried to make it not too annoying, but apologies in advance for any interruption to your browsing -- as ever, it's a balancing act.

Initially, we're rolling it out in our editorial sections, so you won't see it across Talk.

Here's how it should work:

  1. The first time you visit a Mumsnet editorial page you should see a pop up along the bottom of the screen. You can choose to accept all cookies, by clicking ‘I Agree’, or you can manage your individual preferences by clicking ‘show purposes’.
  2. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.

Thanks all - please do let us know your feedback.

Hi @Becca19962014 I just want to clarify what you're seeing here: are you saying the pop up is saying that all purposes are required? At the moment for the first party cookies (the section titled 'Mumsnet') we have the following as required:

  • Information storage and access;
  • Content selection, delivery and reporting; and,
  • Measurement

These cookies allow the site to function as it should -- by allowing you to stay logged in, for example. But the option titled 'ad selection, delivery and reporting' you can turn off.

Under the heading 'Third Party Vendors' all purposes have a toggle for the user to turn on and off.

Is this not what you are seeing?

Honestly I can't remember what it said exactly but it definitely didn't have your logo on it - it was a third party pop up. Usually people are allowed to choose to allow cookies to remain logged in for example, it shouldn't be an essential. I'm not sure what was meant by content, selection and reporting or measurement.

If it pops up again (sorry!) I'll do a screen shot (it probably won't now I've said that!). I did turn off other options, eventually, but it took some convincing as it kept going back to "on" when I scrolled up to double check so am unsure if it even saved my selections or not!

Thanks for getting back to me @Becca19962014 - that shouldn't be happening. If you have selected 'off', it shouldn't automatically turn on. I'll feed that back to Quantcast who have provided this pop up.

You can amend your choices at any time by either going to your account settings, or by going here and you'll see a 'Privacy settings' toggle at the bottom right of the screen. If you click that all your options should come up. If you have time, it would be great if you could just double check your options are as you selected, and if they aren't it would be useful to have a screen shot.

The Mumsnet logo should be appearing on the initial screen, and it is for me at the moment. Although, you're right that it doesn't show on the 'purposes' screen, and I'll feed that back to Quantcast too.

Hello again - this popup is refusing to go away again - every time I click on any mumsnet page I get the same Quantcast box...

I meant to add, that Chrome is fine, it's just Firefox that misbehaves.

Hello, it's me again! Sorry again for the long delay in getting back to some posters, but I just needed to clarify a few things:

@AnneEyhtMeyer We are really sorry you feel this way, but we would like to reassure you that this really isn't an exercise in trying to get you to turn off your ad blocker, but unfortunately ad blockers prevent us from being able to record the option a user has chosen on the pop up. We are working hard to try to get a list of compatible ad blockers to give you the option to keep using one. But we would like to say that we have listened to feedback on ad quality, and as a result we do not run intrusive formats, and we have since removed the large 'reskins' that were appearing across the site - these only appear on the specific area such as the homepage and talk homepage.

Regarding tracking across the web - perhaps I'm misunderstanding your point, but the 'required' options do not allow us to track you across other sites, this relates only to your behaviour on our site. It's also worth noting that cookie data is anonymous and we cannot connect this with you as an individual. You are able to turn off 3rd party cookies which track you elsewhere on the web.

@Abeautifulpeagreenboat Right now, you should have the option to opt out of "Ad selection, delivery, reporting". And we are working on making it possible to opt out of other uses of cookies on the site.

@Becca19962014 We're really sorry to hear about your scrolling issues. If you're able to share a screenshot or further details by PM, we'd be very grateful. Right now, you should have the option to opt out of "Ad selection, delivery, reporting". And we are working on making it possible to opt out of other uses of cookies on the site.

As ever, please keep sending over your feedback.

@NotAnotherJaffaCake sorry to hear again of your problems. I am trying to get from Quantcast a bit more detail about which ad blockers are causing the issue, but in the interim, upthread the user @WingsofXXSteel mentioned a workaround which involves adding Mumsnet to a 'container' on Firefox, and is now reporting that it works fine now. Wings linked to this article, addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Hopefully this will help!

@JanineMumsnet Could you just confirm that currently, the following are all considered as required by Mumsnet please:

Information storage and access
The storage of information, or access to information that is already stored, on your device such as advertising identifiers, device identifiers, cookies, and similar technologies.

Content selection, delivery, reporting
The collection of information, and combination with previously collected information, to select and deliver content for you, and to measure the delivery and effectiveness of such content. This includes using previously collected information about your interests to select content, processing data about what content was shown, how often or how long it was shown, when and where it was shown, and whether the you took any action related to the content, including for example clicking on content. This does not include personalisation, which is the collection and processing of information about your use of this service to subsequently personalise content and/or advertising for you in other contexts, such as websites or apps, over time.

Measurement
The collection of information about your use of the content, and combination with previously collected information, used to measure, understand, and report on your usage of the service. This does not include personalisation, the collection of information about your use of this service to subsequently personalise content and/or advertising for you in other contexts, i.e. on other service, such as websites or apps, over time.

Hi @Abeautifulpeagreenboat

To confirm, at the moment, we require these 3 purposes, but you are able to opt out of "Ad selection, delivery, reporting" and you can opt out of all purposes for 3rd party vendors.

But we are working on being able to opt out of these purposes in the future.

I keep being hassled by it every few days. I've accepted the required ones but don't want to accept more.
Is this an attempt to irritate people into accepting all to get rid of the intrusive pop up?

I'm just getting this issue since yesterday. Doesn't matter how many times I click "accept" it pops up again on the next page. I've tried "Reject all" and I can't choose that option. I've tried "Save and Exit" and nothing happens. It's driving me mad. I don't have any ad blockers that I know of, I'm using Google Chrome. How do I fix it?

I've been getting this recently a lot as well - last two days.

It won't allow me to reject all, it's something I must do manually and like before I find the options I've moved to "off" going back to "on". Been on here about half an hour today and been asked three times to do this.
