Mumsnet deletion policy (with particular reference to Madeleine McCann threads)

JustineMumsnet · 22/05/2007 22:11

Hi all,

We know that very many of you have been distressed by some of the discussions that have taken place on Mumsnet over the last couple of weeks with regard to Madeleine McCann's parents.

We at Mumsnet HQ agree wholeheartedly that criticism of the McCann's, particularly with their daughter still missing, is emphatically not in keeping with the Mumsnet philosophy - namely to offer support to parents in order to make their lives easier. So it?s been mighty difficult for us to sit back and watch some of these conversations unfold, just as it's been difficult for many of you.

On balance, though, we do believe in people's right to their opinions, and though we've found some of the threads to be ungenerous and unpalatable to say the least, we don't tend to delete on those grounds. Partly that's because we've never felt comfortable being the taste police and partly because in our experience you can't really shut down debate - it will just spring up elsewhere. What's more, as a rule we believe that Mumsnet is rather good at self-policing - the power of a reasonable and voluminous response and all that. We do in this instance, however, recognize and fully understand that many of you have had enough of being policemen.

We do promise to continue to investigate thoroughly any posts that you report for troll-like behaviour - be it multiple name-changing or deliberate flaming. And we will, of course, continue to delete any personal attacks.

And apologies for starting yet another discussion on this topic but we thought it might be useful to explain where we were coming from and to admit to you that we are finding many of the calls to be tough ones.

Like all of you, though, we are fully aware that any local difficulty we are having here completely pales in to insignificance compared to the anguish of the McCanns.

Blimey!

Well, I guess that disproves my theory.

How many flounders, then!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/05/2007 23:27

Yes, yes! How many have de-registered???

JustineMumsnet · 22/05/2007 23:30

Very few folks have actually de-registered as far as I know - but of course you could just walk away .
Night all.
ps Please don't.

I so appreciate this transparency at the top. MN is brilliant.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/05/2007 23:33

Well, I know of at least 3 that have....(although two have since come back)

Does that skew the stats a bit?

Blu · 22/05/2007 23:33

Pssst - Lapin and Welliemum - it's ok - we don't boycott messages from the Mothership!

WendyWeber · 22/05/2007 23:35

How does a flounder manage to post?

(Ohhh - a lot like cod I spose)

Carmenere · 22/05/2007 23:37

Glad to read this Justine.

Blu · 22/05/2007 23:38

Justine - is that 1743 individuals PLUS their many trollish name changes, or 1743 personas including their trolltastic namechanging? (you don't really have to answer..but judging by some of the troll-foolery 1743 could generate, ooooh zillions of nicknames)

welliemum · 22/05/2007 23:39

Phew - thanks for the reassurance Blu.

Those stats prove that you can check out any time of night, but you can never leeeeeeeave

DimpledThighs · 23/05/2007 00:01

thanks fro clarifying.

I don't like those threads - they do not sit well i the mumsnet vibe. I don't go but once posted accidently - boy are they touchy!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/05/2007 00:12

Oh aitch, I've had a response, which I have replied to. I'm not expecting any further response but it will be interesting to see if they do respond......

SenseiAitch · 23/05/2007 00:16

was it the bogus 'we aren't fighting that fight right now' response?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/05/2007 01:04

Not quite.....

Mail me, and I'll fill you in......?

SenseiAitch · 23/05/2007 01:08

i don't have your email, i'm on the outside of the cleak looking in. email us it at aitch at babyledweaning dot com and then i'll have it!

zippitippi · 23/05/2007 06:42

I deregistered in April, and have just reregistered in May...as an example of statistical reliability or not

lulumama · 23/05/2007 07:02

thanks for the comment

good that mumsnet's owners / bosses are transparent and open ! much appreciated

and ditto twinkle...this place is heeeeoooge, yet it feels like a community, where you 'know' lots of people!

keep on trucking !!

tigermoth · 23/05/2007 08:19

Does this still mean that all threads not posted on the chat topic will stay on mumsnet forever?

I am really pleased you've put your side of the issue and shared your feelings with everyone.

I still think you could uphold mumsnet's freedom of speech aims, while having a quick delete area. You could move distressing threads there as and when and quietly delete them at some point in the future when disucssion has died down.

JustineMumsnet · 23/05/2007 08:27

Morning all,
We will be discussing the feasibility of a quick delete area which does seem like a good plan plus lots of other suggested topic changes at our next editorial - after half term.

OP posts:
JustineMumsnet · 23/05/2007 08:29

Blu - the 1743 doesn't include nickname changes - so yes could feel like many more "posters".

OP posts:
Enid · 23/05/2007 09:21

Sounds good.

Have a nice half term

JustineMumsnet · 23/05/2007 10:06

Thanks. Same to you Enid .
