So, has anyone ever changed their mind as a result of something they've read on MN?

Just wondering. We have many fierce debates on here. But do people just reinforce their own opinions or does argument actually change minds?

I think I've learnt a lot about SN, for instance. And am sure I've been educated about other stuff beyond my own direct experience. Although helpfully I can't think of an example.

hang on are we intimating that scissors are better than a pizza wheel or are they just better than a knife?

Twiglett · 29/04/2007 11:02

oh and no thanks MI

Moomin · 29/04/2007 11:04

i've learned that everything my dds do that used to worry me is NORMAL - esp. not sleeping through night.

I too now have a mooncup and love it

MN led me to 'The food we give our children' and it genuinely changed my life as far as food and my kids go

think i've become less judgemental - about certain things and more so about others

FlossALump · 29/04/2007 11:07

MN teaches good and bad. Good encouragement, but bad when there only seems to be 'one way' to do something. Ie when Mamazon feels sorry for a child having a fruit shoot. Everything in moderation - MN opinions included!

hatwoman · 29/04/2007 11:07

another one who's more likley to think through the possibility that there might be more than meets the eye to hideous tantrums in public - esp by kids who look "too old" for tantrums; similarly I'm more likely to think there might be a reason why a four old's in a push chair. I think in general I'm more likely to apply this sort of thinking - just the idea that I never know the full picture - and that there's a whole raft of rational explanations, some of which I don;t have personal experience of

hatwoman · 29/04/2007 11:08

and I've got a mooncup

twinsetandpearls · 29/04/2007 11:09

edam I was joking a little bit but not entierly.

I did used to think I was a really good mum until I started posting on here, it diesn't usually bother me and when it does Itake a mumsnet break.

twinsetandpearls · 29/04/2007 11:10

Being a WOHM - I actually became one.

reusable nappies.

Using the word chav - thanks to a telling off from custardo.

mamazon · 29/04/2007 11:10

to clarify -

i do not feel sorry for the child having a fruit shoot.

i feel sorry for the mother who will no doubt end uo the centre of another "guess what i saw when out today.." type thread.

everyone will stand and say how awful it is and how fruit shoot is worse than poison. there will then be a backlash of mners who say "ffs i givemy kid FS and they are fine, they only had 4 fillings last month and the dr assured me they would return pink again really soon"

etc etc etc.

as i say its the poor mother who knew not what she did

Flamesparrow · 29/04/2007 11:12

SN for me too

Tamum · 29/04/2007 11:15

Yes, I am far less judgemental about behaviour (not that I was a harridan before, you understand). I am more insecure about food choices, but only slightly. I do buy more organic food, and that's a direct result of MN (I think MI)- I was always very dismissive of it before because I don't think the health benefits are anywhere near proved, but I can now see how it could be better for the environment and that's something that hadn't occurred to me before.

ChippyMinton · 29/04/2007 11:20

Things I have learned:
SN
Frootshoots vaguely acceptable if they have a GREEN tops (with sugar not sweeteners)

Plus masses of great tips too numerous to mention...and ladies, get yourselves a pizza wheel

ChippyMinton · 29/04/2007 11:21

Bleach is not eco-friendly - i never gave it a thought before MN.

Pollyanna · 29/04/2007 11:25

I also have a mooncup and reusable nappies as a result of mumsnet. I didn't use the nappies with my first 2 children as I thought it would be too much hassle, but I have with my last 2. Generally I suppose I have become a more extreme version of what I was anyway - slightly lentil weaverish crossed with high interest in shopping - MN has reinforced both of these traits in me.

I am also much better educated about SN. I am also more aware of people on lower incomes than me and hopefully less judgmental of peoples choices (or lack of them) as a result- it has been an eye opener in lots of ways how other people live and I feel very priveliged

Flamesparrow · 29/04/2007 11:28

That I had a skill I could use to earn money

MN has shown me that and I am eternally grateful

wheresthehamster · 29/04/2007 11:32

Masses of things mainly to do with food and SN and I truly think I am a better mum since I have been on here.

I still can't believe though that there may be people in the street smirking at my Footglove shoes.

Swizzler · 29/04/2007 15:17

Oh and that I am normal

UCM · 29/04/2007 15:21

I an nots as justdmental as I once was. However I do finsd myself defendings stuff that I have read on here. Partiscularly when BIL teried to give DD a crust refcently. Before I had read about early weaninsg I wouldn't have been bothersed but now I find myself goings banansas

I have totally changeds my once, very narrowminded view on policits becasue of MN.

paulaplumpbottom · 29/04/2007 15:21

I don't know that i have ever changed my opinion totally but have certainly taken other's arguments on board. While I may not agree with people I try to see their points of view and often find their points of view fasinating

UCM · 29/04/2007 15:21

Oh ans I don't reasd the Dailsy mails everyday. Only on a Sarturday.

NadineBaggott · 29/04/2007 15:23

ah a fellow DM reader!

don't let the buggers stop you reading.

I don't read it every day but even if I did I wouldn't let this lot put me off!

mytwopenceworth · 29/04/2007 15:24

i realise i am a 'boot camp' mother.

i wish i had b/f a lot longer.

i am now too scared to give my kids a fruit shoot in public. dh bought one for ds1 and i swapped it for my water in case anyone saw

i feel supported in my no smacking belief,
in rl it seems everyone i know is a smacker!

you have given me a problem though, because you all put forward such good arguments that i find myself often agreeing with both sides of an argument and can't actually identify what I think!

i am developing food fascism. i have stopped buying processed food and am now trying to cook from proper ingredients.

mytwopenceworth · 29/04/2007 15:24

oh yes - i don't dare buy the daily mail any more!!

UCM · 29/04/2007 15:25

I did start to thnik that some of the stuff in it was as bitsl bisased tbh.
